Body region prevalence of injury in alcohol- and non-alcohol-related traffic injuries.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between alcohol use and body region of injury in patients injured in traffic collisions. MATERIALS A … %, and 63% in those without alcohol use, respectively. The differences in the incidence of head and facial injuries were significant between these two groups (p<0.05). Mean blood alcohol concentrations in head, face, chest, abdomen, and extremity injury were 171, 204, 215, 231, and 163 mg/dL, respectively. CONCLUSION: More injuries to the head and facial areas c …

The Wounded Face of Christ: A Catholic Craniofacial Surgeon's Reflection on Facial Trauma and Redemption.

This editorial reflects on the facial trauma of Jesus Christ through the dual lens of Catholic faith and craniofacial surgery. Inspired by Juan Manuel Miñarro's anatomically faithful sculpture "Cristo de la Misericordia," as photographed by Rocío Granados, the piece explores likely injuries sustained during the Passion, including zygomatic fractures, nasal trauma, and soft tissue contusions, with reference to scriptural accounts and forensic studies of the Shroud of Turin. As a craniofacial surgeon, the author examine the physiological plausibility of these injuries and their theological reson

Psychosocial considerations in facial transplantation.

The human face and facial transplantation have long captured the interest and imagination of scientists, the media and the lay public. The face is central to our identity, and our communication with the outside world. It is this great importance we attach to our face that makes facial disfigurement such a devastating condition. Facial transplantation could provide an excellent alternative to current treatments for facial disfigurement caused by burns, trauma, cancer extirpation or congenital birth defects. Herein we discuss some of the principal psychosocial considerations which have preceded

The volume limitation of the galeal temporalis flap in facial augmentation.

Galeal temporalis flaps based on the superficial temporal vessels have been used for facial augmentation and can be extended to the contralateral side beyond the midline in order to achieve maximum volume. In five patients, the volumes of extended galeal flaps were measured intraoperatively using a water displacement method. The calculated volume varied between 28 and 38 cm3. Experience with this flap showed satisfactory results with no complications; therefore, it is concluded that the extended galeal temporalis flap may be a first choice in the correction of facial soft tissue deficits less

Branch facial nerve trauma after superficial temporal artery biopsy: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell arteritis is an emergency requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment. Superficial temporal artery biopsy is the gold diagnostic standard. Complications are few and infrequent; however, facial nerve injury has been reported, leaving an untoward cosmetic outcome. This case report is to the best of our knowledge only the fourth one presented in the available literature so far regarding facial nerve injury from superficial temporal artery biopsy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old Caucasian woman presented for neurological evaluation regarding eyebrow and facial asymmetry aft

Orthopaedic Injuries in Equestrian Sports: A Current Concepts Review.

BACKGROUND: Despite the common nature of orthopaedic injuries in equestrian sports, there is no published review to specifically characteriz … nd epidemiological data for orthopaedic injuries, including fractures and dislocations. Cranial and facial injuries were excluded from analysis. RESULTS: The majority of those injured in the US were female (64.5%). The leading cause of injury in the US was falling from a horse. The use of protective equipment seemed to vary widely, with helmet use ranging from l …

Fluorescence-assisted visualization of facial nerve during mastoidectomy: A novel technique for preventing iatrogenic facial paralysis.

OBJECTIVE: Mastoidectomy can be risky due to the chance of iatrogenic facial nerve dysfunction. Avoiding injuries to the mastoid segment of the facial nerve is mandatory when drilling the bone. With advancements in intraoperative near-infrared indocyanine green (ICG) video angiography, we describe the application of a novel fluorescent guidance technique during mastoidectomies to identify the facial canal with safety. METHODS: Mastoidectomies were performed as the key step in the presigmoid, petrosal or translabyrinthine approaches in 16 patients with different pathologies located at the cere

Skin irritation from a facial mask in Class III malocclusion: evaluation of individual silicone chin cups in a group of 100 children.

BACKGROUND: Reverse headgear (a facial mask) is one of the most frequently used interceptive orthodontic devices in patients with Class III malocclusion. It is a simple device but may present some drawbacks related to pressure on the skin generated by the forehead and chin supports linked to the maxillary intraoral appliance by elastics. This can cause injury to the chin and lips. METHODS: Patients between 7 and 8 years of age were selected from the Unit of Pediatric Dentistry. Orthopedic therapy with a rapid palatal expander and reverse headgear was prescribed for all subjects. The patients

Daily facial stimulation to improve recovery after facial nerve repair in rats.

OBJECTIVE: To establish whether daily mechanical stimulation improves functional recovery of whisking after facial nerve transection injury and repair in rats. METHODS: Forty rats underwent facial nerve transection injury and repair and subsequent quantitative facial movement testing. Animals were randomized into 2 experimental groups (n = 20 each). Both groups received daily 5-minute manual stimulation of their whiskers, with one group undergoing whisker protraction and the other, whisker retraction. Rats were tested on postoperative weeks 1, 4 through 8, and 15 via a validated, quantitative

The marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve in Koreans.

The marginal mandibular branch (MMB) has a particular risk of injury during surgical procedures in the submandibular region, especially over the lower border of the mandible. The facial nerve has been described in many studies, but the MMB is dealt with generally as a branch of the facial nerve. The purpose of this study was to document the anatomy of the MMB by correlation with anatomical landmarks. Eighty-five facial halves were examined for this study. The MMB was classified according to the number of branches and their connections with other branches, and by its relationship with landmarks

Morbidity Rate of the Retrosigmoid versus Translabyrinthine Approach for Vestibular Schwannoma Resection.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Controversy related to the choice of surgical approach for vestibular schwannoma (VS) resection remains. Whether the retrosigmoid (RS) or translabyrinthine (TL) approach should be performed is a matter of debate. In the context of a lack of clear evidence favoring one approach, we conducted a retrospective study to compare the morbidity rate of both surgical approaches. Subjects and. METHODS: 168 patients underwent surgical treatment (2007-2013) for VS at our tertiary care center. There were no exclusion criteria. Patients were separated into two groups according to

Isolated bilateral zygomatic arch fractures of the facial skeleton are associated with skull base fractures.

BACKGROUND: To date, only limited case reports involving isolated bilateral zygomatic arch fractures exist. This fracture pattern is defined by the presence of bilateral zygomatic arch fractures and the absence of any other facial fractures. The purpose of this study was to systematically review a large trauma database to determine whether this fracture pattern exists and, if so, to elucidate the mechanism of injury and associated concomitant injuries. METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients admitted to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma center from February of 1998 to December of 2009 w

Differential neuronal expression of c-fos proto-oncogene following peripheral nerve injury or chemically-induced seizure.

Previous work by others has demonstrated that neocortical injury results in the induction of c-fos protooncogene both at and distal to the site of injury. However, secondary effects of focal brain injury, such as spreading depression and seizure activity, also have been shown to induce the expression of c-fos. Thus, it is unclear whether the stimulus inducing c-fos expression after generalized brain trauma is direct neuronal injury or associated, secondary effects of injury. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that a specific axonal disconnection would induce the expression of c-fos proto-
