Clinician perspectives on assessing for disordered eating and body image disturbance in adolescents and young adults with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining a healthy weight is a focus of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) care. With the increased use of highly effective CFTR modulators, many people with CF are gaining weight more easily, which may affect eating habits and body image. This study investigates providers' understanding and current practices surrounding body image disturbance and disordered eating in people with CF. METHODS: We distributed a one-time web-based survey to United States (U.S.)-based CF healthcare providers via CF Foundation list servs. The survey investigated providers' understanding and perceived importance o

Choking, allergic reactions, and pickiness: A qualitative study of maternal perceived threats and risk avoidance strategies during complementary feeding.

An infant's early eating experiences influence later growth and health. However, motivators for mothers' complementary feeding decisions for their infants, such as the process of introducing solid foods, remains unclear. This qualitative study identified maternal perceived threats surrounding complementary feeding and strategies mothers use to mitigate perceived threats of adverse feeding-related health outcomes for their infants. Twenty-seven mothers participated in private, semi-structured interviews. Inductive and deductive qualitative content analysis revealed three primary themes of mater

Cultural shifts in the symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa: The case of Orthorexia Nervosa.

Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is a term describing a fixation on food purity, involving ritualized eating patterns and a rigid avoidance of "unhealthy foods." Those self-identified as having ON tend to focus on food composition and feel immense guilt after eating food deemed "unhealthy." Although not formally recognized as a psychiatric disorder by the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), ON has received increasing attention since its identification in 1997. There is ongoing work to establish diagnostic and empirical tools for measuring ON; embedded in

Relationship Between Infant Tongue-Tie and Maternal Wellbeing.

BACKGROUND: Tongue-tie is a mild oral anomaly that can cause feeding challenges, especially for breastfeeding mothers and infants. Delayed diagnosis may place mothers at increased risk of stress and impaired mother-infant bonding when feeding does not go as planned. The purpose of this study was to explore the risk for altered maternal wellbeing (e.g., stress and maternal-infant bonding) in mothers of infants with tongue-tie-using-a mixed-methods, cross-sectional study. METHODS: We recruited mothers from two sites to participate in a survey about their experiences with tongue-tie: Facebook™ t

Use of post-harvest common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) residues in diet of lambs and its effect on finishing performance, rumen fermentation, protozoa population and meat characteristics.

The aim of the experiment was to investigate the replacement value of common bean residues in the diet of finishing lambs as an inexpensive fodder instead of wheat straw or maize silage. Forty Arabi male lambs with average body weight of 18.90 ± 0.6 kg were randomly divided into five treatments with eight replications. The five experimental treatments consisted of control diet, and 50% and 100% replacement of bean residues with wheat straw or 25% and 50% replacement with maize silage in the control diet respectively. Lambs were slaughtered at the end of the experiment to evaluate carcass trait

Rumination and perceived social support from significant others interact to predict eating disorder attitudes and behaviors in university students.

University students are at a greater risk for eating disorder attitudes and behaviors (EDAB) compared to the general population. This study examined the roles of rumination and perceived social support (PSS) from three domains in the occurrence of EDAB. Participants: A sample of students (N= 300) attending a rural Midwestern university. Methods: Participants completed online surveys which collected demographic information and assessed eating disorders, rumination, and PSS. Pearson's correlation and moderated regression were performed for analysis. Results: Of the sample, 63.6% of participants

Self-efficacy, infant feeding practices, and infant weight gain: An integrative review.

It has been suggested that self-efficacy specific to parenting or feeding may influence the decisions parents make regarding infant feeding; however, a review of this topic has not been conducted. The purpose of this integrative review is to synthesize the literature regarding the potential role of self-efficacy in infant feeding practices or infant weight gain. A total of 40 articles were used to guide this review, which were classified into three categories examining an association with self-efficacy (1) breastfeeding; (2) infant feeding practices such as parental feeding style and dietary q

Role of central neurotensin in regulating feeding: Implications for the development and treatment of body weight disorders.

The peptide neurotensin (Nts) was discovered within the brain over 40years ago and is implicated in regulating analgesia, body temperature, blood pressure, locomotor activity and feeding. Recent evidence suggests, however, that these disparate processes may be controlled via specific populations of Nts neurons and receptors. The neuronal mediators of Nts anorectic action are now beginning to be understood, and, as such, modulating specific Nts pathways might be useful in treating feeding and body weight disorders. This review considers mechanisms through which Nts normally regulates feeding an

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).

Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is an entirely new diagnosis in the DSM-5. ARFID replaces "feeding disorder of infancy or early childhood," which was a diagnosis in the DSM-IV restricted to children 6 years of age or younger; ARFID has no such age limitations and it is distinct from anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa in that there is no body image disturbance. ARFID involves a complex and heterogenous etiology, which is reviewed herein. What is known to date regarding the characteristics and medical and psychiatric comorbidities of this patient population are described and

Monitoring cow activity and rumination time for an early detection of heat stress in dairy cow.

The aim of this study was to explore the use of cow activity and rumination time by precision livestock farming tools as early alert for heat stress (HS) detection. A total of 58 Italian Friesian cows were involved in this study during summer 2015. Based on the temperature humidity index (THI), two different conditions were compared on 16 primiparous and 11 multiparous, to be representative of three lactation phases: early (15-84 DIM), around peak (85-154 DIM), and plateau (155-224 DIM). A separate dataset for the assessment of the variance partition included all the cows in the herd from June

Appearance and disappearance of functional gastrointestinal disorders in patients with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Functional gastrointestinal disorders or 'functional gastrointestinal disorder-like' symptoms (FGIDs) occur commonly in eating disorders (ED), but it is not known if these disorders are stable over time. The aims were to evaluate the turnover of FGIDs in patients with ED, and to relate this turnover to changes in body mass index (BMI), ED behaviors, and psychological variables. METHODS: Patterns and repeated measures analysis of presence of individual FGIDs and regional FGID categories (esophageal, gastroduodenal, bowel, and anorectal) in ED patients (n = 73) at admission to hospi

The future of research on eating disorders.

In the last several decades, research on the eating disorders has yielded important new knowledge, especially regarding the clinical characteristics and the treatment of individuals with Bulimia Nervosa. Challenging issues now confronting the field include how the eating disorders should be categorized, what factors underlie their development and persistence, and how they are best treated. New efforts based on the analysis of genetic factors, on the use of brain imaging and on the detailed analysis of behavioral disturbances hold promise for significantly advancing our understanding of these d

[Effect of feeding rhythm on digestive activities and diurnal variation in rumen content in sheep].

Three feeding frequencies of late-cut grass hay (two times per day at 8 h interval, once a day, two times per day at 12 h interval) were compared in sheep fitted or not with a rumen fistula. The following parameters were recorded: daily dry matter intake, ingestive activities, reticulorumen load before and after the large meal following each feeding. The daily dry matter intake was not significantly affected by the treatments although it tended to be lower with one only feeding per day. The animals consumed a larger meal after a single feeding in the morning than after two feedings and they th

Plasma oxytocin and cortisol concentrations in dairy cows in relation to feeding duration and rumen fill.

The aim of this study was to investigate if the release of oxytocin and cortisol were different depending on levels of oral manipulation with feed or rumen fill in dairy cows. Blood samples and behavior of 12 rumen-fistulated cows were analyzed in 2 consecutive years during morning and afternoon periods when the cows were subjected to either (A) long duration of oral manipulation of feed with low rumen fill or (B) short duration of oral manipulation of feed but with filled rumen. The response areas under the curve for oxytocin in both years were larger in A than in B in the afternoons. There w

The locus coeruleus calcitonin receptor can Be engaged by amylin and calcitonin gene-related peptide to suppress feeding without inducing nausea.

Efforts to fully characterize the diversity of mechanisms underlying energy balance control have led to the identification of atypical sites of action for metabolic signals. The locus coeruleus (LC), a major noradrenergic nucleus of the brain, has recently been shown to regulate aspects of food intake and energy expenditure. We use complementary pharmacological, behavioral, immunohistochemical, and genetic approaches in both rats and mice to demonstrate the role of LC calcitonin receptors (CTR) in feeding behavior. LC neurons robustly express CTRs that can be pharmacologically and chemogenetic…

Postprandial dynamics of sensory receptor and neural mechanisms underlying feeding regulation in mule ducks.

The gustatory system plays a central role in nutrient detection and feeding regulation in birds, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms in ducks remain poorly characterized. Here, we provide the first integrated analysis of nutrient detection pathways, from peripheral oral sensing to central brain integration, in mule ducks at 4 weeks of age. Nutritional status was confirmed via plasma free fatty acids and triglycerides. We quantified taste receptors mediating sweet (Taste Receptor type 1 member 1 and 3), bitter (Taste Receptor type 2 member 9 and 40), sour (Acid-Sensing Ion Channels), umami
