A new surgical technique with a set of instruments has been developed for the release of carpal tunnel. The technique allows division of the transverse carpal ligament through a short transverse skin incision (1.5 to 2 cm) of the wrist flexion crease under direct visualization. The technique has been used on 237 patients for 275 cases of carpal tunnel release (38 bilateral). Following the release, median time to activities of daily living was 7 days for 60 compensation patients and 6 days for 193 noncompensation patients (22 patients provided no information on the activities of daily living).

Of 570 ERHP performed in patients with biliary tract and pancreas diseases, duodenal diverticuli were found in 67 (11.8 per cent). Diverticuli were more frequently diagnosed in patients beyond 60 years of age (67.2 per cent). BACKGROUND: Changes in the optic disc and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) often precede the appearance of visual field defect with standard automated perimetry. OBJECTIVES: The evaluation of salivary biomarkers has been proposed as a simple and non-invasive aid to the conventional periodontal diagnosis based on clinical-radiographic parameters. Matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8), especially in its active form, is considered one of the most reliable biomarkers of periodontitis, and point-of-care tests (POCTs) have been proposed for its clinical monitoring. In this proof-of-concept study, a novel highly sensitive POCT based on a plastic optical fiber (POF) biosensor exploiting surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to detect salivary MMP-8 is described.
