Impaired functional but preserved structural connectivity in limbic white matter tracts in youth with conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder plus psychopathic traits.

Youths with conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder and psychopathic traits (CD/ODD+PT) are at high risk of adult antisocial behavior and psychopathy. Neuroimaging studies demonstrate functional abnormalities in orbitofrontal cortex and the amygdala in both youths and adults with psychopathic traits. Diffusion tensor imaging in psychopathic adults demonstrates disrupted structural connectivity between these regions (uncinate fasiculus). The current study examined whether functional neural abnormalities present in youths with CD/ODD+PT are associated with similar white matter abnormal

Functional gradient of the fusiform gyrus and its underlying molecular basis.

Evidence has evinced the functional complexity, anatomical heterogeneity, connectivity diversity, and clinical relevance of the fusiform gyrus. We aimed to investigate the hierarchical organization of the fusiform gyrus and its underlying molecular basis. Resting-state functional MRI data of 793 healthy subjects were collected from a discovery dataset and two independent cross-scanner, cross-race validation datasets. Functional gradients of the fusiform gyrus were calculated based on the voxel-wise fusiform gyrus-to-cerebrum functional connectivity to reflect its functional organization. Trans

Development of rostral prefrontal cortex and cognitive and behavioural disorders.

Information on the development and functions of rostral prefrontal cortex (PFC), or Brodmann area 10, has been gathered from different fields, from anatomical development to functional neuroimaging in adults, and put forward in relation to three particular cognitive and behavioural disorders. Rostral PFC is larger and has a lower cell density in humans than in other primates. It also has a large number of dendritic spines per cell and numerous connections to the supramodal cortex. These characteristics suggest that rostral PFC is likely to support processes of integration or coordination of in…

Cognitive and neuroimaging profile of a Brazilian family with CADASIL.

Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is an inherited small vessel disease leading to small infarcts and subcortical vascular dementia. This study presents results from the neuropsychological and neuroimaging evaluation of functionally autonomous individuals of a Brazilian family with CADASIL. The causal mutation was confirmed in four family members. Seven individuals from two generations were evaluated using the CERAD battery and additional neuropsychological tests and were submitted (6 individuals) to magnetic resonance imaging (

Heart rate variability as a biomarker in health and affective disorders: A perspective on neuroimaging studies.

The dynamic embodiment of psychological processes is evident in the association of health outcomes, behavioural traits and psychological functioning with Heart Rate Variability (HRV). The dominant high-frequency component of HRV is an index of the central neural control of heart rhythm, mediated via the parasympathetic vagus nerve. HRV provides a potential objective measure of action policies for the adaptive and predictive allostatic regulation of homeostasis within the cardiovascular system. In its support, a network of brain regions (referred to as the 'central autonomic network') maps inte

Consensus statement on the use of Alzheimer's disease biomarkers and anti-amyloid therapies in Hong Kong.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common aetiology of cognitive impairment worldwide and in Hong Kong. There have been rapid advances in the use of biomarkers for the diagnosis of AD and in the availability of anti-amyloid therapies (AAT) to slow cognitive and functional decline. At present, there is no consensus in Hong Kong regarding the application of AD biomarkers or the use of AAT. A multidisciplinary group of 20 medical specialists from five professional societies discussed issues related to the application of biomarkers for the diagnosis of AD pathology and the use of AAT, and review

Privacy-preserving visualization of brain functional connectivity.

Visualizations are fundamental to neuroimaging research, facilitating tasks ranging from exploratory data analysis to the communication and interpretation of findings. Despite their necessity, visualizations can potentially compromise the confidentiality of individual participants. In this paper, we discuss how visualizations may inadvertently lead to privacy leakage and explore methods to mitigate such risks. Our work investigates ways to securely share visualizations that faithfully preserve the patterns supporting the derived insights from data analysis, rather than deriving conclusions fro

Neuroimaging Patterns of Recreational Drug Use in the Emergency Setting.

Recreational substance use is a global public health problem associated with preventable morbidity and mortality. Commonly consumed substances include alcohol, cannabinoids, opioids, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, cocaine, and inhalants. Given its prevalence in the emergency department, radiologists can expect to see neuroimaging manifestations of recreational drug use. Central nervous system imaging findings associated with recreational drug use vary widely depending on the drug of choice, the route of consumption, and the presence of impurities. Findings can be acute or chronic and include c

Neuroimaging studies of non-suicidal self-injury in young adults with major depressive disorder.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is highly prevalent in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD), elevating suicide risk and indicating poor prognosis. While neuroimaging studies have examined NSSI and MDD separately, systematic reviews focusing on major depressive disorder with non-suicidal self-injury (nsMDD) remain scarce. In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, this study systematically reviewed 24 neuroimaging studies (2013-2025) involving 2379 participants (mean age ≤23 years) from PubMed, PsycInfo, and Embase. Using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale for quality assessment, we found 20 fun

Correlation between cerebral small vessel disease and late-life depression: Insights from neuroimaging studies.

Late-life depression (LLD) is commonly observed in elderly individuals with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). Structural or functional injury of brain parenchyma can affect vascular physiology and lead to CSVD. To date, accumulating evidence has indicated that advanced age and persistent hypertension may damage the regulation of cerebral blood flow (CBF) in response to hemodynamic changes. CBF abnormalities have been associated with endothelial damage followed by blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, and together they injure brain parenchyma. Consequently, ischemic neuroimaging markers are

Shared neural network dysfunctions in treatment-resistant major depression and alcohol use disorder: Resting-state fMRI evidence and implications for neuromodulation.

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) frequently coexist, complicating clinical management and contributing to poor outcomes. Despite their distinct clinical presentations, converging neuroimaging evidence indicates shared neural circuit dysfunctions. This review synthesizes resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) findings, highlighting disruptions within and between core intrinsic brain networks-the default mode network (DMN), salience network (SN), and central executive network (CEN)-as well as subcortical-limbic circuitry. Both TRD and AUD fe

Neuroimaging standards for research into small vessel disease-advances since 2013.

Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) is common during ageing and can present as stroke, cognitive decline, neurobehavioural symptoms, or functional impairment. SVD frequently coexists with neurodegenerative disease, and can exacerbate cognitive and other symptoms and affect activities of daily living. Standards for Reporting Vascular Changes on Neuroimaging 1 (STRIVE-1) categorised and standardised the diverse features of SVD that are visible on structural MRI. Since then, new information on these established SVD markers and novel MRI sequences and imaging features have emerged. As the effect o

Alcohol Binge Drinking: Negative and Positive Valence System Abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Each year, 3 million deaths occur owing to alcohol misuse. Translational studies are crucial to translate preclinical findings to patients. Preclinical studies have highlighted abnormalities in specific brain systems, with these forming the basis of allostasis theory. However, few studies have tested predictions in humans using neuroimaging. METHODS: We used a Research Domain Criteria approach to test allostasis theory predictions of blunted positive valence system (PVS) and abnormally increased negative valence system (NVS) responses in 57 binge alcohol drinking subjects and heal

Primary progressive aphasia: a model for neurodegenerative disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Knowledge on primary progressive aphasia (PPA) has expanded rapidly in the past few decades. Clinical characteristics, neuroimaging correlates, and neuropathological features of PPA are better delineated. This facilitates scientific studies on the disease pathophysiology and allows speech and language therapy to be more precisely targeted. This review article begins with a summary of the current understanding of PPA and discusses how PPA can serve as a model to promote scientific discovery in neurodegenerative diseases. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies on the different variants of

Predicting affective valence using cortical hemodynamic signals.

Ascribing affective valence to stimuli or mental states is a fundamental property of human experiences. Recent neuroimaging meta-analyses favor the workspace hypothesis for the neural underpinning of valence, in which both positive and negative values are encoded by overlapping networks but are associated with different patterns of activity. In the present study, we further explored this framework using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in conjunction with multivariate analyses. We monitored the fronto-temporal and occipital hemodynamic activity of 49 participants during the viewin
