Knowledge about oral contraceptives (OCs) was investigated among young users of OCs by profession of provider, namely, physician or public health nurse. A 44-item questionnaire designed to assess communication about contraception and knowledge of OCs was distributed to students in 11 of 13 high schools in Trondheim, Norway. Data from 688 OC users were eligible for analyses. Knowledge about OCs was measured by means of 15 questions, from which scores on three separate indices and a total index were determined. Separate indices included knowledge about physical changes during OC use (index I), k

BACKGROUND: The coverage of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) remains low despite existing distribution strategies, hence, it was important to assess consumers' preferences for distribution of ITNs, as well as their perceptions and expenditures for malaria prevention and to examine the implications for scaling-up ITNs in rural Nigeria.
METHODS: Nine focus group discussions (FGDs) and questionnaires to 798 respondents from three malaria hyper-endemic villages from Enugu state, south-east Nigeria were the study tools.
RESULTS: There was a broad spectrum of malaria preventive tools being used by

Members of prepaid health plans are often considered a group for which complete histories of exposure to medically-related risk factors are known. In a population-based case-control study of radiography as a risk factor for acute myelogenous leukemia, extensive retrospective exposure data from an average of 71% of subjects' health care providers were collected. It was determined that at least 21% of prepaid health plan members received diagnostic imaging procedures outside of their plans over the 10-y period of interest and that these "outside" procedures constituted 43% of their total red bon

Three girls, aged 3, 7 and 13 years, developed acute peripheral facial palsy. The first patient was initially diagnosed as having Bell's palsy. The third patient had negative serology at first assessment, on the basis of which the diagnosis of Lyme disease was temporarily rejected. Ultimately, all three appeared to have neuroborreliosis. They were treated with intravenous ceftriaxone and recovered well. Facial palsy in childhood is frequently caused by Lyme borreliosis and infection with Borrelia burgdorferi should therefore be investigated, even if there are no signs of a tick bite or erythem

A focus group study was conducted to explore what Mexican women from both sides of the US-Mexican border do to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, including their use of emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs); to examine their knowledge and perceptions of ECPs; and to explore what might influence Mexican women's use of ECPs. Eight focus groups (four in Mexico and four in California) were conducted with 55 sexually active Mexican women age 18 to 34. The women discussed a variety of postcoital methods intended to prevent pregnancy including herbs and injections. Although a third of th

Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance among adolescents in the United States. Adolescent females are recognized as one group at risk for giving birth to babies with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Sixth through eighth grade Native Americans were surveyed about their attitudes toward and knowledge of FAS risk factors and prevention strategies. Data revealed that 52% of students drank alcohol prior to the survey. Though sexually active, students lacked knowledge about the relationship between alcohol and FAS. The study revealed 1) limited prevention programs in middle schools and 2) the mo

The aim of this study, carried out between August 1991 and August 1992, was to understand community perception regarding chronic filarial swellings in Lutsangani village, Kwale district, Kenya. Interviews were conducted with 65 patients and informal discussions held with family and community members. The results indicate that bodily change is the concern of most patients who felt that their physical appearance influenced community reactions towards them. These reactions varied from sympathy to neglect. The community attributed elephantiasis to causes other than mosquitoes and these included wi

Condoms reduce the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission; however, their use among adolescents has been inconsistent. Little is known about factors which motivate consistent condom use, particularly among younger adolescents. In a study designed to identify such factors, 1899 inner-city junior high school students were surveyed. In June 1988, students completed an anonymous self-report questionnaire assessing HIV-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Among sexually active students (N = 403), logistic regression analysis evaluated the influence of demographic, psychosoc

CONTEXT: Simulation-based medical education allows trainees to engage in self-regulated learning (SRL), yet research aimed at elucidating the mechanisms of SRL in this context is relatively absent. We compared 'unguided' SRL with 'directed' SRL (DSRL), wherein learners followed an expert-designed booklet.
METHODS: Year 1 medical students (n = 37) were randomly assigned to practise identifying seven cardiac murmurs using a simulator and video only (SRL group) or a simulator and video plus the booklet (DSRL group). All participants completed a 22-item test 3 weeks later. To compare intervention

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity is a phenomenon with high burden and high prevalence in the elderly. Our previous research has shown that multimorbidity can be divided into the multimorbidity patterns of 1) anxiety, depression, somatoform disorders (ADS) and pain, and 2) cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. However, it is not yet known, how these patterns are influenced by patient characteristics. The objective of this paper is to analyze the association of socio-demographic variables, and especially socio-economic status with multimorbidity in general and with each multimorbidity pattern.

Interprofessional collaboration involves some kind of knowledge sharing, which is essential and will be important in the future in regard to the opportunities and challenges in practices for delivering safe and effective health care. Nursing assistants are seldom mentioned as a group of health care workers that contribute to interprofessional collaboration in health care practice. The aim of this ethnographic study was to explore how the nursing assistants' knowledge can be shared in a team on a spinal cord injury rehabilitation ward. Using a sociomaterial perspective on practice, we captured

BACKGROUND: Stable spinal metastases are effectively treated with radiotherapy, whereas unstable spinal metastases often need surgical fixation followed by radiotherapy for local control. The Spinal Instability Neoplastic Score (SINS) was developed as a tool to assess spinal neoplastic related instability with the goal of helping to guide referrals among oncology specialists. We compare the average degree of spinal instability between patients with spinal metastases referred for surgery or for radiotherapy and evaluate whether this difference changed after introduction of the SINS in clinical
