It is hypothesized that anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) function may be disrupted in psychopathy. Since ACC is considered the generator of the error-related negativity (ERN), we expected the ERN to be sensitive to the degree of psychopathy among violent offenders. EEG was collected while offenders and controls responded to a standard letter flanker task and to a face flanker task that required discrimination between angry and fearful expressions. Offenders were as accurate as controls on the letter flanker task but made more errors in emotion discrimination on the face flanker task. ERNs elici

BACKGROUND: Major depression is characterized by a negativity bias: an enhanced responsiveness to, and memory for, affectively negative stimuli. However, it is not yet clear whether this bias represents 1) impaired top-down cognitive control over affective responses, potentially linked to deficits in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex function; or 2) enhanced bottom-up responses to affectively laden stimuli that dysregulate cognitive control mechanisms, potentially linked to deficits in amygdala and anterior cingulate function.
METHODS: We used an attentional interference task using emotional dis

Increasing evidence indicates that substance-dependent individuals (SDI) are impaired in executive control tasks relying on different systems within the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Three different functional systems have been described: the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPC), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) circuits. Dysfunction within each PFC system is associated with different behavioral, cognitive, and emotional abnormalities. Few studies have conducted an exhaustive examination of all these different factors in SDI. In this study, SDI (including alcohol, co

When the embryonic forebrain (the prosencephalon) fails to sufficiently divide into the two cerebral hemispheres, holoprosencephaly (HPE) results. This disorder can result in various skull and facial defects with brain abnormalities of varying severity. These brain defects ultimately dictate the prognosis. This varies from death in utero, to normal or near normal brain development. In these less severe cases, otherwise normally developing babies are born with rarely seen midfacial cleft deformities, giving away a structural brain deformity. We report a case of an otherwise developmentally norm

The purpose of this study was to compare cerebral cortical representation of experimentally induced reflexive swallow with that of volitional swallow. Eight asymptomatic adults (24-27 yr) were studied by a single-trial functional magnetic resonance imaging technique. Reflexive swallowing showed bilateral activity concentrated to the primary sensory/motor regions. Volitional swallowing was represented bilaterally in the insula, prefrontal, cingulate, and parietooccipital regions in addition to the primary sensory/motor cortex. Intrasubject comparison showed that the total volume of activity dur

OBJECTIVE: Cytoarchitectonic changes in the anterior cingulate cortex, hippocampus, subiculum, entorhinal cortex, amygdala, mammillary bodies, and septum were reported in a postmortem study of autism. Previously, the authors found smaller cingulate volume and decreased metabolism of the cingulate in seven autistic patients. In this study, they measured the volume and glucose metabolism of the amygdala, hippocampus, and cingulate gyrus in an expanded group of 17 patients with autism spectrum disorders (autism [N=10] or Asperger's disorder [N=7]) and 17 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers.

The distribution of obsessive compulsive symptoms was compared in 16 individuals with primary obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and 16 individuals with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) and associated obsessive compulsive behaviors (OCB). The two groups showed significant differences in the distribution of OC symptomatology. Furthermore, those OCD probands who shared a similar symptom profile with GTS individuals all had a positive family history of OCD. All of the other OCD probands were isolated cases. Implications of this finding on the etiology and pathogenesis of the two disorders ar

The relative etiologic roles of ethanol and thiamine deficiency in the cortical atrophy and loss of cerebral white matter in chronic alcoholics are uncertain. The present study examined the distribution of degenerating axons within cortical and subcortical tracts 1 week after recovery from early to late symptomatic stages of thiamine deficiency in the absence of ethanol in Sprague-Dawley rats. The brains of rats exposed to an early symptomatic stage of pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency, 12-13 days of treatment, contained degenerating axons in corpus callosum, anterior commissure, extern

The onset and reversibility of major depression is likely to be explained by diffuse neuromodulatory mechanisms rather than permanent abnormalities of connectivity and neurotransmission. However, the expression of mood state appears to involve fronto-striatal mechanisms. Lesions of the ventral frontal cortex give rise to profound modification of affect and behaviour not explained by effects on current intellectual function. These may represent the most extreme possible disturbances of emotional experience. Neuropsychological testing in major depression shows evidence of slowing in motor and co

A patient with MRI confirmed lesions in the corpus callosum and the left cingulate gyrus had a rare syndrome of crossed avoiding reaction of the left hand. With the right hand she could reach a stimulus object in whatever space it was presented. With the left hand, however, she could not mobilise it to reach a stimulus presented in the right hemispace relative to her body axis. In the left hemispace relative to her body axis her left hand reached an object without any difficulty. This left unilateral difficulty in the right unilateral space may be related to a unique spatial function that cont

Positron emission tomography and 18-F-fluorodeoxyglucose were used to study resting cerebral glucose metabolism in 10 adult women with trichotillomania and 20 age-matched female controls. As a group, the patients with trichotillomania showed significantly increased global (mean gray matter) and normalized right and left cerebellar and right superior parietal glucose metabolic rates. Contrary to expectation, this pattern differed from that seen in our previous investigation of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Clomipramine hydrochloride-induced improvement was negatively correlated with anterior c

The author reports 52 interhemispheric and percallosal operations carried out by himself and certain of his associated trainees upon 50 patients presenting 19 different pathological entities over a period of 38 years (1944 through 1982). The still too little appreciated advantages of this approach over transcortical avenues to the anterior ventricular system are described, together with specific indications, contraindications, and reliable and proven surgical techniques. The long term results are examined for four different outcomes: (a) recovery without deficit or with a deficit wholly charge

RATIONALE: Pain is frequently accompanied by impairments in social behavior; however, the neural circuitry underlying pain-induced social deficits remains poorly understood. The aim of the present study was to delineate the distinct functional roles of γ-aminobutyric acid-releasing (GABAergic) neurons and calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II-positive (CaMKII+) neurons in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in mediating pain-induced social deficits.
METHODS: Mouse models of inflammatory and neuropathic pain were employed. Optogenetic and chemogenetic approaches, combined with fiber p

BACKGROUND: The presence of childhood adversity predicts poorer outcome to antidepressant medications and/or psychotherapy. However its impact on neuromodulation outcomes is unclear. We investigated whether adversity affects outcomes in patients receiving Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) of the subcallosal cingulate area (SCC) for Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD).
METHODS: Longitudinal follow-up data on 56 TRD patients receiving SCC-DBS. The ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) questionnaire was used to quantify adversity and estimate its prevalence in these patients. The primary outcome was r

BACKGROUND: We have previously observed depressive-like behaviors in mice following the development of chronic allergic lung inflammation that potentially involved brain mast cell activation. However, the specific brain regions that might be responsible for the observed behavioral changes were not identified. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) has been implicated in depression, and hypoactivity of this region is seen in the electroencephalogram of patients with depression. In the current study, we tested our hypothesis that chronic allergic lung inflammation causes mast cell activation that a

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have reported inconsistent findings regarding the severity of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in schizophrenia. While abnormalities in neurometabolic pathways have been implicated in both schizophrenia and GI disorders, little is known about the biological underpinnings of GI discomfort in schizophrenia. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between brain metabolite concentrations, blood biomarkers, and self-reported GI symptom severity in patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls.
METHODS: Thirty-six patients with schizophrenia in remission (S

OBJECTIVES: The subdivisions of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) are involved in distinct functions in the processing of chronic pain and regulation of emotions. However, the specific impact of each ACC subdivision on fibromyalgia (FM) remains unclear. This study aimed to systematically investigate the abnormal resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) patterns between the ACC (and its subregions) and other chronic-pain-related limbic cortices and subcortical nuclei in patients with FM.
METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was conducted in 31 patients diag

Working memory is crucial for daily life and is often impaired in neuropsychiatric conditions. Attempts to enhance it using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have shown mixed results, possibly due to large inter-individual variability. This study assessed whether baseline regional brain volume was associated with working memory performance following tDCS. Healthy participants were randomly assigned to three bilateral tDCS protocols (sham, 1.5 mA, and 3 mA) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) (anode-left, cathode-right) for 20 minutes, in a within-subjects design with a
