The molecular basis of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Type VII collagen gene (COL7A1) mutations are the cause of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB), but most mutations are specific to individual families, and there are limited data on the nature of COL7A1 mutations in certain ethnic populations. OBJECTIVE: To determine the molecular basis of DEB in Hispanic Mexican patients. METHODS: Patients were recruited through a newly established support group, Fundacion DEBRA Mexico. Molecular analysis was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of genomic DNA using COL7A1-specific primers, heteroduplex analysis, and direct nucleotide

PUVA-bath photochemotherapy (PUVA-soak therapy) of recalcitrant dermatoses of the palms and soles.

PUVA-bath therapy has proven to avoid many side effects associated with oral 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) treatment. In order to investigate the effectiveness of topical PUVA-bath therapy (PUVA-soak therapy) on chronic palmoplantar dermatoses, 30 patients with plaque-type psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, endogenous eczema, dyshidrotic eczema and hyperkeratotic dermatitis of the palms and soles were treated over 8 weeks with PUVA-soak using 8-MOP. No additional treatment except skin moisturising cream such as unguentum emulsificans aquosum was used during the study period. The single UVA-doses appli

A review of the epidemiology of tinea unguium in the community.

Tinea unguium is a common, chronic fungal infection of the nails. Many epidemiological studies have looked at the frequency with which this condition is seen in hospital outpatients clinics or mycological laboratories along with other dermatomycoses. Only recently have studies begun to emerge looking at the prevalence of this condition in populations. Hospital and mycological laboratory-based studies give valuable information about tinea unguium prevalence in a particular clinic, but cannot be compared with other studies due to confounding factors inherent in the different people attending ind

Immunological studies on the relation between tonsil and pustulosis palmaris et plantaris.

In order to clarify the relationship between the tonsils and pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP), immunological investigations were performed focusing on keratin and antikeratin antibody. As materials, the tonsils, plantar skins and peripheral blood from the patients with PPP undergoing tonsillectomy were used. The results were summarized as follows: 1) Common keratin polypeptides reacting with monoclonal anti-keratin antibody were found both in the tonsillar epithelium and in the plantar skin. 2) High molecular weight keratin polypeptides were predominant in the tonsillar epithelium of the

Occupational skin diseases in cleaning and kitchen employees: course and quality of life after measures of secondary individual prevention.

BACKGROUND: Cleaning and kitchen employees have an increased risk of suffering from occupational dermatoses. Prevention including improving individual skin care and skin protection behavior, health education, optimizing diagnostics and therapy as well as avoidance of occupational skin disease (BK 5101) is important. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Participants in the courses were patients suspected of having an occupational skin disease. Besides socio-demographic and disease-related data, health-related quality of life (QL) was measured using the SF-36 and Skindex-29. One year later all participants we

A Study Assessing Patch Test Results in Hand and Foot Eczema Patients at a Tertiary Care Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Eczema of hand and foot is one of the most common dermatological conditions encountered in the outpatient clinic. Both endogenous and exogenous factors can cause eczema identification and elimination of the triggering factor becomes essential. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of the study was to assess the diagnostic outcomes of patch testing in hand and foot eczema and to study the distribution of clinical patterns and aetiologies causing hand and foot eczema. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients diagnosed with hand and foot eczema had a patch test using Indian stand

The management of Chronic Hand Eczema: A retrospective patient record review.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Hand Eczema (CHE) is a heterogeneous fluctuating inflammatory disease that represents a significant burden. Effective treatment options for moderate to severe CHE are limited. OBJECTIVES: To assess how patients with moderate to severe CHE are treated in clinical practice. METHODS: A retrospective, physician-led patient record review assessed the demographic, clinical and treatment characteristics of patients aged ≥18 years with CHE across seven countries. Each participating physician was requested to review records for their three most recent patients with moderate to sev

Hand eczema-Part 1: Epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and work-up.

Hand eczema (HE), also referred to as hand dermatitis, is a frequent medical condition that can have an important negative impact on quality of life. Occupational HE is an important cause of medical disability. Multiple inflammatory pathways are upregulated, and barrier genes are downregulated in HE. Atopic dermatitis and wet work are 2 important risk factors for HE. Clinical presentation can be variable and location may comprise palmar and dorsal aspects, fingers, fingertips, and wrists of one or both hands. Work-up is directed at identifying causative factors and excluding other diagnoses. T

Hand eczema in glove-wearing patients.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis to gloves is mostly induced by rubber accelerators. The European baseline series (EBS) appears insufficient to detect glove allergy. Since 2017, it is recommended to use the European rubber series (ERS) and to test the patients' own gloves. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical profile of glove-wearing patients with hand eczema (HE) and to evaluate their sensitisation profile to glove allergens and the value of testing the patients' own gloves. METHODS: We conducted a French multicentre study of patients evaluated for HE between 2018 and 2020 and tes

Epidemiological, Clinical, and Allergy Profile of Patients With Atopic Dermatitis and Hand Eczema: Evaluation of the Spanish Contact Dermatitis Registry (REIDAC).

BACKGROUND: Hand eczema is common in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), but few studies have described the characteristics of these patients in large, representative populations from different geographic regions and occupational settings. OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiological, clinical, and allergy profile of patients with hand eczema who underwent patch testing and compare patients with and without AD. METHODS: Analysis of data from the Spanish Contact Dermatitis Registry, a multicenter registry of patients who undergo patch testing in Spain. RESULTS: We included 1466 patients with
