Despite limited evidence supporting its efficacy, the use of post-cycle therapy (PCT) is widespread amongst men following cessation of androgen abuse. The proposed rationale for PCT is to accelerate recovery of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis function following androgen-induced suppression. In this commentary, we consider the distinction between pharmacological response and sustained recovery of endogenous HPG axis function, the relationship between biochemical and symptomatic recovery, and the potential role of PCT as a harm-reduction strategy.

One hundred and seventy-one drug-dependent females in a drug rehabilitation centre were studied to estimate the prevalence of HIV infection among them. Twenty-four (14%) were positive on the Western Blot test. The presence of HIV infection was significantly correlated with syphilis (p < 0.03) and age (p < 0.001); 83% of those who were HIV positive were intravenous drug users. The need for harm reduction programmes to prevent spread of HIV infection among injecting drug users is stressed.

Smoking cannabis in medical users is associated with exposure to harmful toxins. This study was designed to investigate the lifestyle and substance use habits of dance music event attendees together with their attitudes toward prevention of substance misuse, harm reduction measures and health-care resources.
