Early childhood exposures to phthalates in association with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder behaviors in middle childhood and adolescence in the ReCHARGE study.

BACKGROUND: Early-life exposure to phthalates alters behaviors in animals. However, epidemiological evidence on childhood phthalate exposure and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) behaviors is limited. METHODS: This study included 243 children from the ReCHARGE (Revisiting Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment) study, who were previously classified as having autism spectrum disorder (ASD), developmental delay, other early concerns, and typical development in the CHARGE case-control study. Twenty phthalate metabolites were measured in spot urine samples collected fr

Associations Between Personality Traits and Energy Balance Behaviors in Emerging Adulthood: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Internalizing and externalizing personality traits are robust risk factors for substance use and mental health, and personality-targeted interventions are effective in preventing substance use and mental health problems in youth. However, there is limited evidence for how personality relates to other lifestyle risk factors, such as energy balance-related behaviors, and how this might inform prevention efforts. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine concurrent cross-sectional associations between personality traits (ie, hopelessness, anxiety sensitivity, impulsivity, and sensation

Internet Addiction Disorder and Cybersecurity Risk: A Neurobiological and Behavioral Review.

Internet addiction disorder (IAD) has attracted substantial clinical and scientific interest over the past two decades. Although the condition remains outside formal diagnostic frameworks in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, accumulating neuroimaging evidence demonstrates that compulsive Internet use is associated with disruptions in dopaminergic reward circuitry and prefrontal cortical function that closely parallel those observed in substance use disorders. These neurobiological changes, encompassing impaired executive function, elevated impulsiv

Social/Party Incentives Increase the Risk of Heavier Alcohol Use in Impulsive Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is associated with excessive drinking and negative alcohol-related consequences. However, studies have not used an in-vivo approach (i.e., daily diary) to examine how the effect of impulsivity on excessive alcohol use could be moderated by context-specific mechanisms, such as incentives. METHOD: The study recruited a sample of young adults (n = 102, 61.8% females), who, for two weeks, responded to questions about their total number of drinks and the incentives (alcohol incentives and social/party incentives) that influenced their decisions to drink. At baseline, partic

Understanding time to vaping onset in childhood and adolescence: A dual systems model approach.

BACKGROUND: Vaping has grown in prevalence among youth populations over the past decade and has been promoted as a safer alternative to smoking despite the potential health risks. There is a dearth of research which has examined the timing of onset of vaping from childhood into adolescence. Childhood predictors vaping onset have also been understudied. This study sought to address gaps in the literature by examining timing of vaping onset, relevance of childhood levels of dual systems model constructs (sensation-seeking, impulse control) for predicting differential onset, and the potential tha

Self-harm behaviour and externally-directed aggression In psychiatric outpatients: a multicentre, prospective study (viormed-2 study).

The aim of the project was to investigate differences between outpatients with Severe Mental Disorders (SMDs) with and without a history of Self-Harm behaviour (SHb) and/or Violent behaviour against other people (Vb) in relation to: (a) socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, (b) violent behaviour during a 1-year FU, (c) predictors of SHb and Vb during the FU. Outpatients with SMDs, with and without a history of Vb were enrolled. They were divided in four groups: patients with lifetime Vb (V), patients with both Vb and SHb (V-SH), patients with only SHb (SH) and patients with no histor

Facets of Impulsivity and Compulsivity in Women with Anorexia Nervosa.

This study sought to investigate independent associations of impulsivity and compulsivity with eating disorder (ED) symptoms. Women (N = 81) with full or subthreshold Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV anorexia nervosa (AN) completed a semi-structured interview and self-report questionnaires. Multiple regression analyses were conducted using ED symptoms as dependent variables and facets of impulsivity and compulsivity as predictor variables (controlling for body mass index and AN diagnostic subtype). For impulsivity facets, lack of perseverance was uniquely associated wit

Delay discounting and gambling.

Delay discounting describes the decline in the value of a reinforcer as the delay to that reinforcer increases. A review of the available studies revealed that steep delay discounting is positively correlated with problem or pathological gambling. One hypothesis regarding this correlation derives from the discounting equation proposed by Mazur (1989). According to the equation, steeper discounting renders the difference between fixed-delayed rewards and gambling-like variable-delayed rewards larger; with the latter being more valuable. The present study was designed to test this prediction by

The ecological validity of laboratory and analogue assessment methods of ADHD symptoms.

An important question in the attempt to generalize laboratory findings on attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children to clinical issues concerning their assessment, diagnosis, outcome, and treatment response is the ecological validity of the commonly used tasks and analogue behavioral observation procedures. This paper examines the concept of ecological validity and issues inherent in its evaluation. The evidence from a variety of sources is then reviewed on the relationship between laboratory methods of assessing inattention, impulsivity, and overactivity and measures of these s

Aripiprazole Provoking Gambling Disorder in a Patient With Opioid Use Disorder: A Case Report.

Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic used to treat certain mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, or as an adjunct therapy for treatment-resistant depression. In 2016, the FDA reported compulsive behaviors or uncontrollable urges can be associated with aripiprazole use. We report a 37-year-old Caucasian female with a past medical history of unspecified depressive disorder and opioid use disorder, who was treated with aripiprazole (Abilify) and then experienced compulsive gambling resulting in a suicide attempt. The patient reported playing scratch-off lottery tickets s

The effects of alcohol problems and smoking on delay discounting in individuals with gambling problems.

Problem gambling is an addictive behavior with high comorbidity with alcohol problems and smoking. A common feature shared by these conditions is impulsivity. Past research shows that individuals with any of these addictions discount delayed money at higher rates than those without, and that the presence of gambling and substance use lead to additive effects on discounting. To date, however, no study examined the impact of smoking on these associations. The goals of this study were to compare the discounting rates of gamblers with and without histories of alcohol problems and smoking, and asse

Interaction of the BcII glucocorticoid receptor polymorphism and childhood abuse in Bulimia Nervosa (BN): relationship to BN and to associated trait manifestations.

We recently documented a gene-environment interaction suggesting that individuals with Bulimia Nervosa (BN) differed from normal eaters as to the combined presence of the low-function allele of the glucocorticoid receptor polymorphism, BcII, and childhood abuse. The present study examined the extent to which any such interaction effect may have been attributable to behavioral impulsivity, sensation seeking, affective instability or depression. We had 174 bulimic and 130 nonbulimic women provide blood for genetic assays, and measured psychopathological traits and childhood abuse using structure

Patient versus informant reporting of ICD symptoms in Parkinson's disease using the QUIP: validity and variability.

Questions exist regarding the validity of patient-reporting of psychiatric symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). We assessed observer variability and validity in reporting of impulse control disorder (ICD) symptoms in PD by using the Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease (QUIP). PD patients and their informants (71 pairs) completed the QUIP to assess four ICDs (compulsive gambling, buying, sexual behavior, and eating) in patients. Trained raters then administered a diagnostic interview. Sensitivity of the QUIP for a diagnosed ICD was 100% for both patient- and

Teacher reports of DSM-IV ADHD, ODD, and CD symptoms in schoolchildren.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of DSM-IV symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder and age, gender, and comorbidity differences between ADHD subtypes. METHOD: Teachers completed a DSM-IV-referenced symptom inventory for 3,006 schoolchildren aged between 3 and 18 years. RESULTS: The screening prevalence rate of ADHD behaviors was 15.8%; rates for individual subtypes were 9.9% for inattentive, 2.4% for hyperactive-impulsive, and 3.6% for combined. The inattentive type was relatively uncommon in preschool children (3.9

Interacting immediate and long-term action regulation in suicidal behavior.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a prominent cause of death across the lifespan, especially between 10 and 34 years old. Most suicides are first attempts, during crises with unpredictably fluctuating risk, arising insidiously from mechanisms related to long-term exposure to psycho-bio-social risk factors. Identifying susceptibility from interacting immediate and long-term mechanisms of action regulation could prevent suicidal crises. METHODS: We investigated interacting immediate and long-term regulation of action in risk for suicide. Immediate processes were assessed through affective and behavioral s

Chronic atomoxetine treatment during adolescence does not influence decision-making on a rodent gambling task, but does modulate amphetamine's effect on impulsive action in adulthood.

In addition to the symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder exhibit impaired performance on tests of real-world cost/benefit decision-making. Atomoxetine, a nonstimulant drug approved for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor administered chronically during adolescence, a time during which the frontal brain regions necessary for executive function undergo extensive maturation. This treatment protocol can affect behavior well into adulthood, but whether

Development and validation of the Gambling Pathways Questionnaire (GPQ).

The Pathways Model (Blaszczynski & Nower, 2002) is a theoretical framework that proposes three pathways for identifying etiological subtypes of problem gamblers. The model has been used to assist clinicians in developing individualized treatments that target not only the gambling behavior but also associated risk factors that may undermine recovery and precipitate relapse. The current study sought to develop and validate a new screening instrument, based on the Pathways Model for treatment-seeking gamblers. Participants were gamblers age 18 and over who scored 1+ symptoms on the Problem Gambli

Cognitive flexibility, impulsivity, and compulsivity in problematic consumption behaviours.

Different studies have identified cognitive inflexibility, impulsivity and compulsivity in substance use and gambling disorder, but it is unclear whether these deficits are present in other possible addictive behaviours. In this study, we evaluated cognitive inflexibility, as measured by the Probabilistic Reversal Learning Task (PRLT), impulsivity across UPPS-P model and the compulsivity in regular gamblers, buyers, video gamers, consumers of pornography and control group. Multivariate analysis was performed to evaluate the five groups, revealing higher scores across several impulsivity and co

[Crime prevention in high-functioning pervasive developmental disorders with paraphilia].

Paraphilia refers to occasional concomitant disorders of pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). When a restricted interest of PDD is focused on a sexual object, paraphilia may be develop as a problematic symptom. However, having this concomitant disorder does not always result in criminal behavior. When the social interactivity of a particular patient with PDD is severely impaired, paraphilia could lead to a sex crime. Because pedophilia targets sacrifice innocent and defenseless children, it is critical to prevent such sex crimes by understanding the psychopathology of PDD with paraphilia, e

[Trichotillomania: clinical presentation, causes, treatment options].

Trichotillomania (compulsive pulling out of hair) is a disorder belonging in the group of obsessive-compulsive disorders, the frequency of which is underestimated. It is a complex clinical condition comprising both compulsive and impulsive elements, which makes it anything but easy to treat. Currently, the best documented treatment options are behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
