BACKGROUND: In the last few decades, considerable attention has been paid to entomopathogenic fungi as biocontrol agents, however little is known about their mode of action and safety. This study aimed to investigate the toxicity of Aspergillus flavus in insect Spodoptera litura by analyzing the effect of fungal extract on antioxidant and cellular immune defense. In antioxidant defense, the lipid peroxidation (Malondialdehyde content) and antioxidant enzymes activities (Catalase, Ascorbate peroxidase, Superoxide dismutase) were examined. In cellular immune defense, effect of A. flavus extract

BACKGROUND: Forcipomyia taiwana (biting midge) allergy is the most prevalent biting insect allergy in Taiwan. An animal model corresponding to the human immuno-pathologic features of midge allergy is needed for investigating the mechanisms and therapies. This study successfully developed a murine model of Forcipomyia taiwana allergy.
METHODS: BALB/c mice were sensitized intra-peritoneally with midge extract on days 0, 7, 14, 21 then intra-dermally on days 28, 31 and 35. Serum midge-specific IgE, IgG1, and IgG2a were measured every 14 days by indirect ELISA. The mice were challenged intraderma

BACKGROUND: The Sterile insect technique (SIT) has been successfully used in agricultural pest control, leading to interest in its application for public health, particularly in controlling Aedes mosquitoes in the USA, Italy, Cuba, and Greece. Malaysia has conducted a small-scale SIT pilot trial since 2019 for dengue control. This study evaluates mosquito populations in treated and untreated sites through three objectives: (1) comparing mean larvae per trap (MLT) and dengue cases for Ae. aegypti and Aedes albopictus; (2) estimating survival rates and wild populations using mark-release-recaptu

UNLABELLED: In Latin America, Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main vector of the protozoan parasite Leishmania infantum, which is the causal agent of American Visceral Leishmaniasis. This insect uses male-produced pheromones for mate recognition. Elucidation of pheromone biogenesis or its regulation may enable molecular strategies for mating disruption and, consequently, the vector's population management. Motivated by our recent results of the transcriptomic characterization of the L. longipalpis pheromone gland, we performed a proteomic analysis of this tissue combining SDS-PAGE, and mass spect

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease has historically been linked to triatomines and rural areas. However, urban infestations by one of its vectors, Triatoma infestans, are increasingly being reported. Urbanization is reshaping vectorial transmission patterns of this disease, creating new collective health challenges. To provide evidence on the eco-epidemiological status of Chagas in the metropolitan region of San Juan, Argentina, this study integrates data collected on biomedical, epidemiological, socioenvironmental, and territorial factors.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 432 urba

Vector control is usually designed as a top-down system with limited capacity to respond to the unique characteristics of each epidemiological setting, or to adjust to routine stressors that challenge ongoing programs, such as resource limitations and competing priorities. Here, we investigated barriers in Chagas disease vector surveillance and control systems in Arequipa, Peru. We conducted in-depth interviews and a focus group with key stakeholders (n = 32) at different levels of the health system and community. For interviews, we used process maps to illustrate the workflow for passive and

Gambiense Human African Trypanosomiasis (g-HAT) is a neglected tropical disease caused by trypanosomes transmitted by tsetse flies. 70% of cases in 2019 (604/863) occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The national programme for g-HAT elimination in DRC includes a large-scale deployment of Tiny Targets which attract and kill tsetse. This intervention is directed by vector-control specialists with small teams, moving in canoes, deploying Tiny Targets along riverbanks where tsetse concentrate. While the targets are deployed in communal areas, and the method is cheap and easy-to-use,

BACKGROUND: Gambian sleeping sickness or HAT (human African trypanosomiasis) is a neglected tropical disease caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense transmitted by riverine species of tsetse. A global programme aims to eliminate the disease as a public health problem by 2020 and stop transmission by 2030. In the South of Chad, the Mandoul area is a persistent focus of Gambian sleeping sickness where around 100 HAT cases were still diagnosed and treated annually until 2013. Pre-2014, control of HAT relied solely on case detection and treatment, which lead to a gradual decrease in the number of c

Since the early 1980s, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) which is, in general, a rural zoonotic disease, has spread to the urban centers of the north, and now the south and west of Brazil. The principal drivers differ between cities, though human migration, large urban canid populations (animal reservoir), and a decidedly peripatetic and adaptable sand fly vector are the primary forces. The exact number of urban cases remains unclear as a result of challenges with surveillance. However, the number of urban cases registered continues to increase annually. Most control initiatives (e.g. culling infect

From 1977 (index case) to 2006, 87 cases of visceral leishmaniasis were confirmed in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in periurban areas on the continental and coastal slopes of the Pedra Branca massif and the continental slopes of the Gericinó massif. The majority (65.5%) of the patients were more than five years old, predominantly males (61.5%), but without any difference between the sexes below the age of 14 years. The overall fatality rate was 10.4%. Two cases of visceral leishmaniasis/human immunodeficiency virus coinfection were detected. Leishmania chagasi was isolated from h

BACKGROUND: Introducing sustainability and self-reliance is essential in chronic humanitarian emergencies before financial assistance is phased out. In Pakistan-based Afghan refugee camps, this was attempted through shifting from indoor residual spraying (IRS) to the subsidized sale of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) for prevention of malaria and anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL). Here we outline the strategy and document the progress to provide guidance for replication of similar approaches in other chronic refugee situations.
METHODS: The operational monitoring data presented were

During summer 1991 an outbreak of louse-borne relapsing fever occurred simultaneously in two transit camps established for prisoners of war being returned from Eritrea at the end of the Ethiopian civil war. Only antibiotic treatment was given at the Bahr Dar camp where the frequency of cases increased for 20 days. Vector control by delousing in addition to antibiotics was given at Mekele camp where the frequency of cases fell over a similar period. This difference was significant (p < 0.001). Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between the decreasing proportion of camp inhabitants

The data needed to develop analytical models of trypanosomiasis transmission have become available only recently. By making some simplifying assumptions, models of the dynamics of the disease in vector, cattle and wild mammal populations can be constructed in order to determine criteria for successful disease control by mass and targetted chemotherapy, and by vector control. The heterogeneity in transmission due to tsetse fly feeding preferences and the variability of immunological characteristics among the vertebrate hosts account for differences in prevalence of Trypanosoma vivax and T. cong

A number of chemical hazards are associated with the care and handling of animals. A variety of pesticides are used to control fleas, ticks, and other insects. Rodenticides often are used in animal housing facilities. Veterinarians and their helpers may be exposed to anesthetic gases, pharmaceuticals, including antineoplastic agents, disinfectants such as phenol and formaldehyde, and sterilants such as ethylene oxide. Great care must be taken to minimize occupational exposures to chemical hazards.

BACKGROUND: Arboviral diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika are public health concerns worldwide. Prevention and control of these diseases still depend on controlling Aedes aegypti mosquito vectors. Sterile insect technique (SIT) and incompatible insect technique (IIT) are environmental friendly approaches that show promising impacts. In order to plan an implementation of SIT/IIT technology, background knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) related to mosquito-borne diseases, mosquito vectors and their prevention and control, as well as acceptance and willingness to pay (WTP) for the

BACKGROUND: The eye-seeking fly Musca sorbens can act as a vector for ocular Chlamydia trachomatis, causing trachoma, yet there has been very little research on control measures. We investigated whether insect repellent products, specifically insecticide-treated clothing, could provide personal protection to the user from eye-seeking flies.
METHODS: We first conducted a series of phase I laboratory studies to inform our choice of field intervention. We then conducted a phase II randomised controlled trial testing the efficacy of permethrin-treated scarves (PTS) in reducing fly-face contact in

BACKGROUND: Eugenol is a botanical monoterpene that hyperactivates the blood-sucking bug Triatoma infestans, and permethrin is a pyrethroid with a strong triatomicide effect. In the present work, we tested the hypothesis that eugenol-hyperactivated nymphs of T. infestans pick up more insecticide, and then become intoxicated faster, than non-hyperactivated nymphs when exposed to a permethrin-treated surface.
RESULTS: Values of knockdown time 50% (KT50) for third-instar T. infestans exposed to a paper impregnated with permethrin were obtained under the following situations: (a.i.) immediately a

BACKGROUND: Sri Lanka has experienced severe dengue epidemics in recent years, despite the extensive vector control measures taken. Therefore, it is necessary to find sustainable vector control strategies against dengue. Novel vector control tools need to be tested for the feasibility of applying them against local vectors. Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is an increasingly popular vector control technique which has been adopted by many countries to suppress insect pest populations and is being tested for dengue vectors.
METHODS: In this study, SIT was developed for Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 18

Calliphoridae and Mesembrinellidae flies play a key role in nutrient cycling and environmental sanitation. Their distribution is shaped by vertical resource availability and species-specific biological traits. Understanding the efficiency and selectivity of sampling methods is essential to reveal distribution patterns and corrected sampling biases, enabling more accurate estimates of population density and resource use. We assessed the abundance of calliphorids and mesembrinelids females and males in traps with two types of baits (bovine lung and fermented banana) exposed at two heights (0.6 m
