Establishing clinically meaningful severity levels for the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK-13).

BACKGROUND: Kinesiophobia is an excessive, irrational and debilitating fear of physical movement and activity resulting from a feeling of vu … ls of kinesiophobia. These severity groups were then validated by their associations with objective lifting performance (presumed to be highly related to one's level of kinesiophobia) and other PRO questionnaires, assessing depressive symptoms, pain intensity, pain-related anxiety and perceived disability, which all have been shown in previous research to …

Impact of occupational mechanical exposures on risk of lateral and medial inguinal hernia requiring surgical repair.

OBJECTIVES: We undertook a register-based cohort study to evaluate exposure-response relations between cumulative occupational mechanical ex … r each individual since 1993, we established time-varying cumulative estimates of exposure to daily lifting activities and standing/walking. Cumulative exposures for lagged 5-year time windows were expressed in a way that corresponds to the pack-year concept of smoking (ton-years, frequent-heavy-lifting years, and standing-years). First-time inguinal hern …

The influence of external load configuration on trunk biomechanics and spinal loading during sudden loading.

Sudden loading is a major risk factor for work-related lower back injuries among occupations involving manual material handling (MMH). The current study explored the effects of external weight configuration on trunk biomechanics and trunk rotational stiffness in the sagittal plane during sudden loading. Fifteen asymptomatic volunteers experienced sudden loadings using the same magnitude of weight (9 kg) with two different configurations (medially- or laterally-distributed) at three levels of height (low, middle and high). Results of this study showed that the medially distributed weight result

Treatment of refractory perianal fistulas with ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract: preliminary results.

Several surgical options exist for management of fistula in ano. The goal of treatment is to achieve closure of the fistula while maintaining continence. Sphincter-sparing operations to close perianal fistulas include advancement flap, anal fistula plug, fibrin glue, and fistulectomy. Variable success rates from 30 to 80 per cent have been reported. Ligation of intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT), first described in 2007, has a reported success rate from 40 to 94 per cent. The objective of this study was to study our results of the LIFT procedure for refractory perianal fistulas. We conducte

Short-duration fatigue alters neuromuscular coordination of trunk musculature: implications for injury.

The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect of muscle fatigue, produced by two different fatigue protocols, on the coordination of trunk and thigh muscles during the performance of a manual-handling task (e.g. a weighted stoop lift). The two fatigue protocols were designed to produce either (a) a non-specific widespread fatigue of trunk and limb muscles (e.g. rowing fatigue protocol), or (b) a specific fatigue of the trunk extensor musculature (e.g. back extension fatigue protocol). Specifically, we wished to determine whether the coordination of trunk muscles during a stoop lift

Characterization of anticipatory postural adjustments in patients with post-stroke hemiplegia using smartphones.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to measure anticipatory postural adjustment characteristics of patients with stroke hemiplegia during one-leg s … decrease in peak magnitude compared with controls. Additionally, the peak magnitude was lower when lifting the paretic leg than the non-paretic leg, and the peak latency was slower when lifting the non-paretic leg than the paretic leg. Peak latency of non-paretic leg elevation correlated with Fugl-Meyer Assessment and Mini-BESTest scores. INTERPRETATION …

Modelling Intra-Sinus Fluid Movements and Drainage Through Computational Fluid Dynamics Before and After Maxillary Sinus Augmentation: A Simulation-Based Pilot Study.

Objectives: Sinus lifting, a procedure to augment bone in the maxilla, may cause complications such as sinusitis due to impaired drainage. This study aimed to assess how sinus lifting impacts airflow in the sinus cavity, which is essential for patients undergoing dental implants. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), this research analyzed airflow changes after sinus floor elevation, offering insights into the aerodynamic consequences of the procedure. Methods: Digital modeling and CFD analysis were performed using patient cone-beam computed tomography data. Three different sinus elevation…

Does a Soft Actuated Back Exosuit Influence Multimodal Physiological Measurements and User Perception During an Industry Inspired Task?

Back support soft exosuits are promising solutions to reduce risk of musculoskeletal injuries at workplaces resulting from physically demanding and repetitive lifting tasks. Design of novel active exosuits address the impact on the muscle activity and metabolic costs but do not consider other critical aspects such as comfort and user perception during the intended tasks. Thus, in this study, we describe a novel soft active exosuit in line with its impact on physiological and subjective measures during lifting. We tested four healthy participants who performed repetitive lifting tasks with and …

Facilitation of dependent transfers with functional neuromuscular stimulation: a computer simulation study.

A two-part simulation process was developed to investigate the facilitation of vertical patient lifts with functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS) in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). First, external lifting forces representing caregiver assistance were applied to a 3D musculoskeletal model representing the patient and optimized to enforce a specific lifting trajectory during a forward dynamic simulation. The process was repeated with and without the activation of the knee, hip, and trunk extensor muscles of the patient model to represent contractions of the paralyzed muscles gener…

Injury-induced kinematic compensations within the lower back: impact of non-lower back injuries.

With the number of musculoskeletal disorders increasing in the workplace, the potential exists for multiple injuries due to compensations. The objective of this study was to quantify the impact of non-lower back injuries on the trunk motions adopted by the individual during typical lifting tasks. A total of 32 injured subjects (eight for each injury group--shoulder, hand/wrist, knee and foot/ankle) and 32 matched (gender, height and weight) healthy subjects performed laboratory lifting tasks. The independent variables were task asymmetry (clockwise, sagittally symmetric and counter-clockwise),…

Incidence of Maxillary Sinus Membrane Perforation During Crestal Sinus Elevation: A Comparison of Osteotomes and Osseodensification Drills in Human Cadavers.

This study aims to compare the incidence of sinus membrane perforation between osseodensification and osteotome crestal sinus lift techniques when 5 mm of residual bone is present beneath the sinus floor. Additionally, it seeks to identify when the perforation most commonly occurs-during instrumentation, bone grafting, or implant insertion. A split-mouth design using 20 sinuses from 10 fresh human cadaver heads were employed. One side underwent a bone-added osteotome crestal sinus lift, while the other side received an osseodensification lift. Membrane perforation was recorded through video an
