Risk Aversion and Alzheimer Disease in Old Age.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that late-life risk aversion is partly a prodromal sign of dementia. METHODS: The authors' design was a longitudinal clinical-pathologic cohort study. The setting included participants' residences in the Chicago area, and a total of 874 older persons without dementia were enrolled. At baseline, risk aversion was assessed with questions involving choices between certain smaller rewards and uncertain larger rewards. At annual intervals thereafter, participants underwent evaluations that included cognitive testing and diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI)

Linear and nonlinear relationships between cognitive subdomains of ability discrepancy and Alzheimer's disease biomarkers.

OBJECTIVE: Substantial research indicates that fluid and crystallized abilities are highly correlated throughout the adult life span. However, recent proposals suggest that a large discrepancy between these two abilities, defined as crystallized performance minus fluid performance, indicates heightened risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHOD: In 266 cognitively healthy older adults, the present study tested linear and quadratic relationships between an ability discrepancy score and early AD neuropathology indexed via in vivo measures of beta-amyloid deposition and cortical thickness in AD-v

Tool use in neurodegenerative diseases: Planning or technical reasoning?

Recent works showed that tool use can be impaired in stroke patients because of either planning or technical reasoning deficits, but these two hypotheses have not yet been compared in the field of neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of this study was to address the relationships between real tool use, mechanical problem-solving, and planning skills in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD, n = 32), semantic dementia (SD, n = 16), and corticobasal syndrome (CBS, n = 9). Patients were asked to select and use ten common tools, to solve three mechanical problems, and to complete the Tower of Londo

The working memory advantage for meaningful stimuli persists under high levels of proactive interference.

Previous work has shown that visual working memory performance is higher for recognizable and meaningful stimuli relative to meaningless, but physically matched, stimuli (e.g., Asp et al., 2021). Here, we test whether the benefit for meaningful stimuli arises due to active storage in working memory or can, at least in part, be explained by reliance on more durable memories that persist across trials, such as episodic long-term memory that can substitute for active maintenance. We used ambiguous Mooney faces (Exp. 1, Exp. 3) and objects (Exp. 2) as well as scrambled versions of the same stimuli

Distinct medial-tempora lobe mechanisms of encoding and amygdala-mediated memory reinstatement for disgust and fear.

Current models of episodic memory posit that retrieval involves the reenactment of encoding processes. Recent evidence has shown that this reinstatement process - indexed by subsequent encoding-retrieval similarity of brain activity patterns - is related to the activity in the hippocampus during encoding. However, we tend to re-experience emotional events in memory more richly than dull events. The role of amygdala - a critical hub of emotion processing - in reinstatement of emotional events was poorly understood. To investigate it, we leveraged a previously overlooked divergence in the role o

The Zinc-sensing Receptor (GPR39) Modulates Declarative Memory and Age-related Hippocampal Gene Expression in Male Mice.

As a neuromodulator, zinc regulates synaptic plasticity, learning and memory. Synaptic zinc is also a crucial factor in the development of toxic forms of amyloid beta protein and, subsequently, of Alzheimer's dementia (AD). Therefore, efforts to pinpoint mechanisms underlying zinc-dependent cognitive functions might aid AD research, by providing potential novel targets for drugs. One of the most understudied proteins in this regard is a zinc-sensing metabotropic receptor: GPR39. In this study we investigated the impact of GPR39 knock-out (KO) on age-related memory decline in mice of both sexes

Neuropsychological Similarities and Differences Between Amnestic Alzheimer's Disease and its Non-Amnestic Variants.

BACKGROUND: The neuropsychological recognition of early-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) can be difficult because of non-amnestic variants such as logopenic variant primary progressive aphasia (lvPPA) and posterior cortical atrophy (PCA). OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the similarities and differences between typical amnestic AD (tAD) and lvPPA and PCA on a screening neuropsychological battery. METHODS: We enrolled 51 patients meeting NIA-AA criteria for biomarker-supported AD (amnestic or non-amnestic) and having an age of onset of <65 years of age. The role of cognitive training in the neurorehabilitation of a patient who survived a lightning strike. A case study.

BACKGROUND: Lightning-related injuries most often involve impairment of the functions of the central and peripheral nervous systems, usually including cognitive dysfunctions. We evaluated the cognitive deficit of a patient who had survived a lightning strike and measured the improvement after her cognitive training. This therapeutic method appears to be a powerful tool in the neurorehabilitation treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this case study was to prove the beneficial effects of cognitive training as part of the neurorehabilitation after a lightning strike. METHODS: Six neuropsychological

Baby brain? Evidence for no objective cognitive differences between mothers, fathers and non-parents in the post-partum period.

Becoming a parent is a significant life transition, leading to extensive change and uncertainty in one's daily environment. Parenthood is often thought to have adverse consequences across multiple cognitive domains, such as memory, a phenomenon known colloquially as 'baby brain'. Evidence supporting an objective cognitive decline in the postpartum period is unconvincing, and it is unknown whether fathers experience similar changes in cognitive function. Here we examine cognitive differences in birthgiving mothers and non-birthgiving fathers up to two years postpartum. Four hundred participants

The cingulate cortex and limbic systems for action, emotion, and memory.

Different limbic structures including the hippocampal memory system and the amygdala/orbitofrontal emotion system have very different connectivity and functions, and it has been suggested that we should no longer think of a single limbic system. A framework is provided for understanding the connectivity and functions of different parts of the cingulate cortex in action, emotion, and memory, in the context of connections of different parts of the cingulate cortex with other limbic and neocortical structures. First, the anterior cingulate cortex receives information from the orbitofrontal cortex

Development of a psychometrically equivalent short form of the Face-Name Associative Memory Exam for use along the early Alzheimer's disease trajectory.

Neuropsychologists are developing more challenging and specific tests to detect early and subtle changes in cognition related to preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD). The 16-item Face-Name Associative Memory Exam (FNAME-16) is a challenging paired associative memory test able to detect subtle memory changes associated with biomarker evidence of preclinical AD. However, as individuals progress along the AD trajectory, measures that are sensitive at the preclinical stage may become too challenging by the stage of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Our goal was to develop a modified version of the

Neural basis of temporal context memory: a functional MRI study.

Temporal context information is crucial to understanding human episodic memory. Human lesion and neuroimaging data indicate that prefrontal regions are important for retrieving temporal context memory, although the exact nature of their involvement is still unclear. We employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to elucidate the neural basis of two kinds of temporal context memory: the temporal order of items between lists and within a list. On the day of the fMRI experiment, subjects memorized a list of 30 pictures in the morning and another list of 30 pictures in the afternoon. Dur

Olfactory context and memory across the adult lifespan: effects on mnemonic discrimination and olfactory function.

Odor is a powerful contextual cue that can influence memory and is closely linked to brain regions involved in episodic memory, including the hippocampus. Age-related olfactory dysfunction is among the earliest behavioral changes associated with cognitive decline and may contribute to memory impairments in older adults. Hippocampal pattern separation, or the process of reducing interference among similar experiences, provides a sensitive measure of age-related memory decline, yet little is known about how olfactory context influences mnemonic discrimination. In the present study, we examined w

Retrieval-related Eye Movements Are Predictive of Memory Precision.

Eye movements are predictive of successful episodic memory encoding and retrieval, but it is unclear whether they reflect the precision of retrieved memory content. Here, we examined relationships between eye fixations, memory precision, and fMRI BOLD activity. At study, participants were presented with object images, each placed at a random location on a circle. At test, both studied and new images were presented. Participants were instructed to recall and signal the studied location of each image, guessing if necessary. They then indicated if the image had been studied. Simultaneous fMRI and

Executive dysfunction in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 3.

The aim of this study was to assess the cognitive functions of patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 3(SCA3). We examined 15 patients with genetically confirmed SCA3 and 15 healthy control subjects matched for age, years of education, and intellectual ability. We administered verbal memory (word recall and word recognition) and executive function tasks (word fluency test, forward and backward digit and visual span tests, Kana Pick-out Test, Trail Making Test, and conflicting instructions and a Go/NoGo task from the Frontal Assessment Battery). We found that patients with SCA3 had significa

Nobiletin improves emotional and novelty recognition memory but not spatial referential memory.

How to maintain and enhance cognitive functions for both aged and young populations is a highly interesting subject. But candidate memory-enhancing reagents are tested almost exclusively on lesioned or aged animals. Also, there is insufficient information on the type of memory these reagents can improve. Working memory, located in the prefrontal cortex, manages short-term sensory information, but, by gaining significant relevance, this information is converted to long-term memory by hippocampal formation and/or amygdala, followed by tagging with space-time or emotional cues, respectively. Memory for shape reactivates the lateral occipital complex.

Memory is thought to be a constructive process in which the cortical regions associated with processing event features are reactivated during retrieval. Although there is evidence for non-detailed cortical reactivation during retrieval (e.g., memory for visual or auditory information reactivates the visual or auditory processing regions, respectively), there is limited evidence that memory can reactivate cortical regions associated with processing detailed, feature-specific information. Such evidence is critical to our understanding of the mechanisms of episodic retrieval. The present function

Exploration of verbal and non-verbal semantic knowledge and autobiographical memories starting from popular songs in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: In mild Alzheimer's disease (AD), a deficit in episodic memory, particularly autobiographical memory, is clearly established. Several recent studies have also shown impaired semantic memory from the onset of the disease. Musical memory capacities may be especially preserved and listening to music might encourage autobiographical recall. The aim of this study was to explore recall of popular songs in AD. METHODS: We tested 12 patients with mild AD and 12 control subjects. We created a tool made up of old French popular songs: POP 10. This tool is a questionnaire composed of several
