Progress and opportunities in the development of vaccines against mites, fleas and myiasis-causing flies of veterinary importance.

Despite the potential benefits offered by vaccination against ectoparasites, there have been few commercial successes with this strategy, in spite of sustained efforts using increasingly sophisticated techniques. This review outlines the progress and challenges offered by recent research into vaccination against some of the major ectoparasites of veterinary importance, and provides an insight into the opportunities arising from our increased understanding of the immunology of host-parasite relationships and the potential for exploitation of this knowledge and that arising from new genomic data

Scrub Typhus Outbreak at Sagalee Block, Arunachal Pradesh, India, September 2023.

BACKGROUND: In August 2023, a scrub typhus "outbreak-alert" was generated by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program from Sagalee block, Arunachal Pradesh, India. OBJECTIVES: We investigated to characterize the outbreak and identify possible exposures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case was defined as immunoglobulin M antibody positive for scrub typhus by rapid diagnostic or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in resident (>6 months stay) of Sagalee block between January and September 2023 and identified from surveillance line-list and facility record review. We interviewed cases using a semi-s

Management of endemic outbreaks of scabies with allethrin, permethrin, and ivermectin.

BACKGROUND: At three residences for the elderly, recurrent scabies infestations became out of control. Due to the failure of repeated, nonsynchronized therapeutic efforts with conventional external anti-scabies treatments, an eradication program had to be developed. We describe a protocol for the management of outbreaks of scabies. METHODS: According to the clinical examination and microscopically identified mites, all individuals of the population (IOP: patients, staff, and family members) were divided into two groups: (a) healthy and infested IOP; and (b) cases with crusted scabies. The fir

Emerging parasitic diseases of sheep.

There have been changes in the emergence and inability to control of a number of sheep parasitic infections over the last decade. This review focuses on the more globally important sheep parasites, whose reported changes in epidemiology, occurrence or failure to control are becoming increasingly evident. One of the main perceived driving forces is climate change, which can have profound effects on parasite epidemiology, especially for those parasitic diseases where weather has a direct effect on the development of free-living stages. The emergence of anthelmintic-resistant strains of parasitic

Diseases diagnosed in red foxes from the southeastern United States.

Diagnostic findings on 51 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from the southeastern United States examined from 1967 to 1995 were reviewed. Etiologic diagnoses included sarcoptic manage (n = 33), traumatic injury and associated complications (n = 5), suspected canine distemper (n = 2), capture myopathy (n = 1), congenital absence of guard hairs (n = 1), intradermal tick infestation (n = 1), otodectic manage (n = 1), and toxicosis (n = 1). The cause of morbidity was not determined for three of the foxes, and three others were classified as normal animals. Sarcoptic manage was diagnosed in 65% of the red

Camera traps reveal a high prevalence of sarcoptic mange in red foxes from northern Spain.

The mite Sarcoptes scabiei affects numerous mammal species causing the sarcoptic mange, a widespread disease with relevance for wildlife conservation, welfare, and management. The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) could become infested by direct and indirect routes leading to external skin lesions potentially recognizable by devices such as camera traps (CTs). In the present study, 86 randomly placed CTs were used to investigate the apparent prevalence and severity of S. scabiei in a red fox population from northern Spain. Their potential environmental and population-related drivers were also assessed.

Crusted Scabies in a Pediatric Liver Transplant Recipient on Immunosuppression.

BACKGROUND Crusted scabies is a severe skin infection resulting from hyper-infestation with the obligate parasite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. In contrast to classic scabies, crusted scabies may involve as many as hundreds to millions of mites. Importantly, this condition is associated with a mortality rate of 60% in 5 years, and is more likely to develop in immunosuppressed hosts, presumably due to an impaired T-cell response against the mite. CASE REPORT We present a case of crusted scabies in a 13-year-old girl during her early post-liver transplant period receiving immunosuppression suc

Demodex carolliae in a colony of Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata): clinical, pathological and parasitological findings.

Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata) are a frugivorous species native to Central and South America. Despite their importance as a reservoir for zoonotic pathogens and their popularity in zoological collection and as research models, there are relatively few reports on non-zoonotic diseases of bats. Mites of the genus Demodex are obligate commensals of the skin of a range of mammals, are highly host-specific and are not associated with clinical disease when present in low numbers. However, infestation with high numbers can result in severe or even fatal disease and substantially af

Parasitic fauna of bats from Costa Rica.

Bats are important reservoirs and spreaders of pathogens, including those of zoonotic concern. Though Costa Rica hosts one of the highest bat species' diversity, no information is available about their parasites. In order to investigate the occurrence of vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) and gastrointestinal (GI) parasites of chiropterans from this neotropical area, ectoparasites (n = 231) and stools (n = 64) were collected from 113 bats sampled in Santa Cruz (site 1) and Talamanca (site 2). Mites, fleas and ticks were morphologically and molecularly identified, as well as pathogens transmitted by

Effect of diatomaceous earth on parasite load, egg production, and egg quality of free-range organic laying hens.

The effectiveness of diatomaceous earth (DE) as a treatment against parasites and to increase feed efficiency and egg production of organically raised free-range layer hens was evaluated in 2 breeds of commercial egg layers [Bovan Brown (BB) and Lowmann Brown (LB)] that differ in their resistance to internal parasitic infections. Half the hens of each breed were fed diets supplemented with DE (2%). Their internal parasite loads were assessed by biweekly fecal egg counts (FEC) and by postmortem examination of the gastrointestinal tract. Supplementing DE in diets of LB hens, the more parasite-re

Response of predatory mites to a herbivore-induced plant volatile: genetic variation for context-dependent behaviour.

Plants infested with herbivores release specific volatile compounds that are known to recruit natural enemies. The response of natural enemies to these volatiles may be either learned or genetically determined. We asked whether there is genetic variation in the response of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis to methyl salicylate (MeSa). MeSa is a volatile compound consistently produced by plants being attacked by the two-spotted spider mite, the prey of P. persimilis. We predicted that predators express genetically determined responses during long-distance migration where previously lea

Surveys for ectoparasites on wildlife associated with Amblyomma variegatum (Acari: Ixodidae)-infested livestock in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Surveys in 2001, 2005, and 2006 attempted to determine the role of wildlife in maintenance and dissemination of the tropical bont tick, Amblyomma variegatum (F.) (Acari: Ixodidae), in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Small mammals; birds; white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmermann); and feral cattle, Bos taurus L., were examined at nine premises, in mountainous rain forest, and in surrounding areas in western St. Croix, an area including and central to all known bont tick-infested premises on the island. Small Asian mongooses, Herpestes javanicus (E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire), yielded

Endectocidal efficacies of doramectin in naturally parasitized pigs.

The studies reported here were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of doramectin, given intramuscularly at the rate of 300 micrograms kg-1 of bodyweight, in the treatment of naturally acquired porcine nematodosis and acariasis. Twenty pigs demonstrated to be naturally infected with pulmonary and gastrointestinal nematodes were used in one control study, and 22 pigs demonstrated to be naturally parasitized with Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis were used in a second study. In both studies, animals were evenly divided between doramectin plus vehicle and vehicle-treated groups by restricted rand

In vitro and in vivo acaricidal activity and residual toxicity of spinosad to the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae.

This paper describes two experiments conducted to examine the acaricidal potential of spinosad against the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer), a serious ectoparasitic pest of laying hens. Spinosad is a natural product derived from the fermentation of the micro-organism Saccharopolyspora spinosa. In vitro testing confirmed that, when applied to a galvanised metal plate to the point of run-off, spinosad was toxic to adult female D. gallinae and suggested that at an application rate of 3.88 g/L a significant residual toxicity of spinosad could be achieved for up to 21 days. Prevalence of Demodex folliculorum in a university-based population.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The multifactorial aspect of dry eye disease remains challenging. Demodex folliculorum, a common ectoparasite on human eyelashes, may impact eye conditions such as blepharitis which can be a contributor to dry eye disease. Exploring risk factors for Demodex helps to raise awareness for early detection potentially improving ocular health. BACKGROUND: Demodex folliculorum found on eyelashes can cause blepharitis. Its gelatinous debris at the base of the lashes, termed cylindrical dandruff is often associated with ocular itching. This study examined the prevalence of Demodex
