Occupational asthma triggered by inhaling fish-derived aerosols is estimated to affect 2-8% of exposed individuals. This primarily affects workers in the fish processing industry. PROBLEM: The expected substantial increase in people aged 65 or older is important for those concerned about transportation injuries. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of upper extremity discomfort among piano majors at seven Philadelphia-area music schools. A questionnaire was distributed to 232 students, and a 31% return rate was obtained. Thirty (42%) of the 71 respondents reported experiencing discomfort that lasted more than 1 week, and 41 (58%) of the respondents reported experiencing little or no discomfort. Twenty-six (87%) of the students with discomfort suspended practice for a period of time or made adjustments at the piano. Pain/aching was the predominant discomfort reported among students.

Superoxide disproportionation may partially account for the noteworthy radioprotectant activity of bis(3,5-diisopropylsalicylato)copper(II) [CuII(3,5-dips)2]. Groups of mice treated with CuII(3,5-dips)2 3 or 24 h before exposure to a lethal dose of gamma-radiation had survival rates of 33% and 58%, respectively. These results suggest that copper complexes might be developed for protection of normal tissues in association with cancer radiotherapy and protection against occupational exposures to hazardous radiation.

The voice quality of 86 occupational voice users, i.e., students of a high school for audiovisual communication, was assessed by means of a multidimensional test battery containing: the GRBAS scale, videolaryngostroboscopy, maximum phonation time, jitter, lowest intensity, highest frequency, dysphonia severity index (DSI), and voice handicap index (VHI). In a questionnaire on daily habits the prevalence of smoking, eating habits, and vocal abuse were recorded. A comparison of the voice characteristics of the future occupational voice users with a control group revealed significant differences.

In the past 40 years, prison populations in the U.S. have nearly quadrupled while funding for rehabilitation, education and other programmes has been cut. Despite accounting for a small fraction of the world's population more than 20% of the worlds incarcerated population is in the U.S. and the rate of recidivism remains alarmingly high. Occupational therapists have the capability to play a significant role in addressing the needs of persons within the criminal justice system.
