Experimental investigation on regulated and unregulated emissions of a diesel/methanol compound combustion engine with and without diesel oxidation catalyst.

The use of methanol in combination with diesel fuel is an effective measure to reduce particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from in-use diesel vehicles. In this study, a diesel/methanol compound combustion (DMCC) scheme was proposed and a 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated direct-injection diesel engine modified to operate on the proposed combustion scheme. The effect of DMCC and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) on the regulated emissions of total hydrocarbons (THC), carbon monoxide (CO), NOx and PM was investigated based on the Japanese 13 Mode test cycle. Certain unregulated…

High purity fibrous air sampling media.

Interest in measurement of low concentrations of metal levels in suspended particulate matter has generated needs for high purity, low background filters. Several new types of filters are discussed with high purity compositions including glass fiber filters, fluorocarbon membranes and fabric-supported membrane filters. Air collection efficiencies are presented along with comparative analysis.

Phase-dependent mechanisms in ferrihydrite photoreduction mediated by derivatives of polystyrene microplastics.

The photoreductive dissolution of iron (hydr)oxides directly regulated the bioavailability of Fe(II), a process which was influenced by dissolved organic matter (DOM). Microplastic-derived DOM (MP-DOM), characterized by oxygenated aromatic structures, also mediated the photoreductive dissolution of iron (hydr)oxides. Oxidized derivatives of microplastics coexist in the environment as both dissolved and particulate phases, including particulate nanoplastics (NPs) and truly dissolved organic matter (DOM). These phases fundamentally differed in size, interfacial interaction mechanisms, and enviro

Prenatal exposure to air pollution is associated with structural changes in the neonatal brain.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to air pollution is associated with adverse neurologic consequences in childhood. However, the relationship between in utero exposure to air pollution and neonatal brain development is unclear. METHODS: We modelled maternal exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) at postcode level between date of conception to date of birth and studied the effect of prenatal air pollution exposure on neonatal brain morphology in 469 (207 male) healthy neonates, with gestational age of ≥36 weeks. Infants underwent MR neuroimaging at 3 Tesla at 41…

Sequelae of intrinsic foreign-body contamination during selective renal angiography in rabbits.

The significance of foreign-body contamination of contrast media, flushing solutions, and angiographic equipment was investigated by selective renal angiography in 32 rabbits. Infarction caused by foreign bodies introduced by the angiographic procedure was frequently demonstrated. As a particulate matter is also injected during human angiography, its effects should be carefully sought.

Biomarker as a research tool in linking exposure to air particles and respiratory health.

UNLABELLED: Some of the environmental toxicants from air pollution include particulate matter (PM10), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and ultrafine particles (UFP). Both short- and long-term exposure could result in various degrees of respiratory health outcomes among exposed persons, which rely on the individuals' health status. METHODS: In this paper, we highlight a review of the studies that have used biomarkers to understand the association between air particles exposure and the development of respiratory problems resulting from the damage in the respiratory system. Data from previous ep…

Use of respiratory protection among responders at the World Trade Center site--New York City, September 2001.

The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) on September 11,2001, created an occupational health and safety challenge for New York City (NYC) firefighters and rescue workers responding to the disaster. Immediate respiratory hazards included explosions, fire, falling debris, and dust clouds containing particulate matter comprised of pulverized building materials. Ongoing risks included lingering particulate matter in the air and intermittent combustion products from initial and persistent fires beneath the rubble pile. Because the nature and extent of exposures in disaster situations …

Air pollution alters Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae biofilms, antibiotic tolerance and colonisation.

Air pollution is the world's largest single environmental health risk (WHO). Particulate matter such as black carbon is one of the main components of air pollution. The effects of particulate matter on human health are well established however the effects on bacteria, organisms central to ecosystems in humans and in the natural environment, are poorly understood. We report here for the first time that black carbon drastically changes the development of bacterial biofilms, key aspects of bacterial colonisation and survival. Our data show that exposure to black carbon induces structural, composi…

Risk assessment of the common air pollutants in Teplice, Czech Republic.

In the framework of the systematic investigation of the environment of the district of Teplice (Northern Bohemia), one of the most polluted regions in Europe, an attempt was made to estimate health risks to the inhabitants posed by the most common air contaminants (SO2, NOx, particulate matter). A meta-analysis of data published in recent papers dealing with health effects was performed. At first we weighed the number of positive and negative findings focusing on the following health indicators: prevalence of symptoms (coughing, wheezing), decreased respiratory function, prevalence of respirat…

The association of air pollution and mortality: examining the case for inference.

An association between air pollution measured as particulate matter, and mortality has been reported in several different locations. These studies have been conducted over a wide range of climates and populations. The time-series studies, which examine the joint occurrence of daily fluctuations in air pollution and mortality, provide the strongest evidence of a true association. However, several criteria, including the consistency of the results, need to be explored before causality is inferred from these studies. A striking consistency in the results was observed, after the different studies …

Unregulated delayed emissions dominate ultrafine particles from modern diesel vehicles.

Diesel exhaust is a major source of urban particulate matter (PM), especially ultrafine particles, with implications for air quality and public health. Current studies and emission standards mainly target directly emitted, non-volatile particles, whereas temperature-sensitive particles formed or transformed during post-tailpipe cooling remain poorly constrained. Here, we operationally define delayed particulate matter (DPM) as a thermally removable particle fraction and quantify it using temperature-resolved measurements from 30 to 300 °C, combined with chassis-dynamometer and tunnel observati…

Seasonal variation in air pollutant levels and its effects on the sex ratio at birth on Fukue island, Japan.

BACKGROUND: In general, a slightly higher number of boys are born than girls, and the sex ratio at birth (number of male births/number of female births) is reported to be 1.03-1.07 in many countries. However, pregnant women exposed to high levels of atmospheric particulate matter have a reduced sex ratio at birth. Exposure to air pollutants can also lead to premature birth, suggesting that inflammation within the body may affect pregnancy maintenance and fetal development. On the other hand, the effects of air pollutants carried from afar by monsoons on the sex ratio at birth in downstream are…
