Responses to compound objects in monkey inferotemporal cortex: the whole is equal to the sum of the discrete parts.

It is commonly thought that neurons in monkey inferotemporal cortex are conjunction selective--that a neuron will respond to an image if and only if it contains a required combination of parts. However, this view is based on the results of experiments manipulating closely adjacent or confluent parts. Neurons may have been sensitive not to the conjunction of parts as such but to the presence of a unique feature created where they abut. Here, we compare responses to two sets of images, one composed of spatially separate and the other of abutting parts. We show that the influences of spatially se

On the functional neuroanatomy of visual word processing: effects of case and letter deviance.

This functional magnetic resonance imaging study contrasted case-deviant and letter-deviant forms with familiar forms of the same phonological words (e.g., TaXi and Taksi vs Taxi) and found that both types of deviance led to increased activation in a left occipito-temporal regions, corresponding to the visual word form area (VWFA). The sensitivity of the VWFA to both types of deviance may suggest that this region represents well-known visual words not only as sequences of abstract letter identities but also includes information on the typical case-format pattern of visual words. Case-deviant i

Different spatial scales of shape similarity representation in lateral and ventral LOC.

We investigated the relationship between stimulus similarity for a set of parameterized shapes and the spatial scale of neural representation within subregions of the lateral occipital complex (LOC) using a carryover functional magnetic resonance imaging design. In ventral but not lateral LOC, a linear recovery from adaptation proportional to shape dissimilarity was seen. In contrast, a strong correspondence of the distributed neural pattern and stimulus similarity was observed in lateral LOC but not ventral LOC. Further, ventral LOC voxels were found to be broadly tuned and represent all aspe

Behavioural indexes of callosal functioning in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurogenetic disorder that stems from a microdeletion on chromosome 7. Recent anatomical studies have found evidence for corpus callosum abnormalities in WS. However, to date, the impact of these structural differences on callosal functionality remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate interhemispheric communication and hemispheric asymmetry in individuals with WS relative to mental age-matched controls. This was assessed using bilateral and unilateral presentations of visual stimuli in a picture-naming task. Results found both groups to exhib

Abnormal global processing along the dorsal visual pathway in autism: a possible mechanism for weak visuospatial coherence?

Frith and Happe (Frith, U., & Happe, F. (1994). Autism: Beyond theory of mind. Cognition, 50, 115-132) argue that individuals with autism exhibit 'weak central coherence': an inability to integrate elements of information into coherent wholes. Some authors have speculated that a high-level impairment might be present in the dorsal visual pathway in autism, and furthermore, that this might account for weak central coherence, at least at the visuospatial level. We assessed the integrity of the dorsal visual pathway in children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and in typically de

A longitudinal study of category-specific agnosia.

We report a 12-year longitudinal case study on a 60-year-old male patient (DW) with category-specific agnosia. The extent to which DW's impairment has changed over time was evaluated using identical tests at time 1 (1988) and time 2 (2000). In particular, we assessed his ability to identify pictures and real objects, to draw from memory, and to access stored semantic information about living and non-living things. The principal findings were: (i). DW was significantly better at identifying real objects in comparison with line drawings. (ii). DW presented with a category-specific impairment for

Elemental and configural visual discrimination learning following lesions to perirhinal cortex in the rat.

Rats were tested in a series of two-choice visual discrimination tasks in a computer-controlled testing apparatus. The discriminations used a range of discriminanda, which varied in complexity. The discriminations included relatively simple form discriminations, more complex form discriminations and discriminations between compound stimuli that shared many features. It was found that rats with perirhinal cortex lesions were unimpaired in all discriminations except those that involved the compound stimuli with overlapping features. Using these stimuli, rats with perirhinal cortex lesions were u

Naming of animals and tools: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study of categorical differences in the human brain areas commonly used for naming visually presented objects.

To investigate the neural substrates for naming objects and their category-dependency, we performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with naming of animals and tools. Naming objects, irrespective of their category, activated left frontal to bilateral parietal regions and occipital to posterior temporal regions. Within these areas, naming animals caused more activation of the primary visual cortex bilaterally and the ventral occipital cortex to the inferior temporal area on the right side. Naming tools caused more activation of the posterior part of the left middle temporal area, th

A sequence of object-processing stages revealed by fMRI in the human occipital lobe.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used in combined functional selectivity and retinotopic mapping tests to reveal object-related visual areas in the human occipital lobe. Subjects were tested with right, left, up, or down hemivisual field stimuli which were composed of images of natural objects (faces, animals, man-made objects) or highly scrambled (1,024 elements) versions of the same images. In a similar fashion, the horizontal and vertical meridians were mapped to define the borders of these areas. Concurrently, the same cortical sites were tested for their sensitivity to image-scra

Neuronal responses related to visual recognition.

To analyse the neural basis of long-term memory, recordings were made from single neurons in monkeys performing a visual recognition task of the type impaired in anterograde amnesia in man. Each visual stimulus was shown twice per day, once as novel, and after 0 to 17 other intervening items in the recognition task, on a second trial, as familiar, when the monkey could lick to obtain fruit juice if he recognized the stimulus correctly. At the anterior border of the thalamus, a population of neurons was found which responded to the stimuli only when they were familiar. The activity of these neu

Hallucinations following occipital lobe damage: the pathological activation of visual representations.

Neuropsychological investigation of hallucinations may provide insight into the nature of these subjective phenomena, as well as inform theories of perception and recall. We studied a man who described continuous visual hallucinations of object fragments (e.g., lines, corners, patterns) in the left visual field following a stroke in the right occipital cortex. The subject performed normally on standardized measures of visual perception and other cognitive abilities. He had no personality disturbance, and EEG during hallucinations was normal. Review of our records of 211 cases with focal lesion

The pattern-evoked potential in compression of the anterior visual pathways.

Pattern evoked responses have been recorded in 19 patients with compression of the optic nerve, chiasm or tract, verified at operation. These included 4 patients with orbital tumours, 5 with intracranial meningiomas, 2 with craniopharyngiomas and 8 with pituitary tumours. The evoked response was abnormal in all except one of these patients. The pattern of abnormalities in the response, however, differed from that in the earlier series of patients with primary demyelinating disease. The incidence of delayed responses was much lower, and the magnitude of the delays was smaller. Absent responses

Observations on the geographic variation and skeletal development of Aotus.

The geographic pattern of coat color and craniometric variation were examined in Aotus. The coat color and pattern permitted recognition of the geographic origin of night monkeys from many parts of Latin America. The geographic pattern of craniometric variation differed from the pattern of phenotypic variation and led the authors to doubt the validity and usefulness of the currently recognized subspecific classification. Tooth eruption and bone ossification were studied in a sample of Aotus skeletons. Tentative criteria were presented for judging the ages of night monkeys by visual examination

Representational similarity analysis reveals atypical age-related changes in brain regions supporting face and car recognition in autism.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is associated with atypical activation in the ventral stream during face processing. The current study further characterizes the development of face processing in ASD using a multivoxel pattern analysis, which assesses the similarity in the representation of exemplars from the same category. METHODS: Ninety-two children, adolescents and adults - with and without ASD - performed the Cambridge Face Memory Test, the Australian Face Memory Test, and a matched car memory test. Regions of interest during these tasks included Fusiform Face Area (FFA), based

Perception and Processing of Faces in the Human Brain Is Tuned to Typical Feature Locations.

UNLABELLED: Faces are salient social stimuli whose features attract a stereotypical pattern of fixations. The implications of this gaze behavior for perception and brain activity are largely unknown. Here, we characterize and quantify a retinotopic bias implied by typical gaze behavior toward faces, which leads to eyes and mouth appearing most often in the upper and lower visual field, respectively. We found that the adult human visual system is tuned to these contingencies. In two recognition experiments, recognition performance for isolated face parts was better when they were presented at t

Atypical Asymmetry for Processing Human and Robot Faces in Autism Revealed by fNIRS.

Deficits in the visual processing of faces in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) individuals may be due to atypical brain organization and function. Studies assessing asymmetric brain function in ASD individuals have suggested that facial processing, which is known to be lateralized in neurotypical (NT) individuals, may be less lateralized in ASD. Here we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to first test this theory by comparing patterns of lateralized brain activity in homologous temporal-occipital facial processing regions during observation of faces in an ASD group and an NT grou

A voxel-based lesion study on facial emotion recognition after penetrating brain injury.

The ability to read emotions in the face of another person is an important social skill that can be impaired in subjects with traumatic brain injury (TBI). To determine the brain regions that modulate facial emotion recognition, we conducted a whole-brain analysis using a well-validated facial emotion recognition task and voxel-based lesion symptom mapping (VLSM) in a large sample of patients with focal penetrating TBIs (pTBIs). Our results revealed that individuals with pTBI performed significantly worse than normal controls in recognizing unpleasant emotions. VLSM mapping results showed that

Using eye movements as an index of implicit face recognition in autism spectrum disorder.

Individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) typically show impairment on face recognition tasks. Performance has usually been assessed using overt, explicit recognition tasks. Here, a complementary method involving eye tracking was used to examine implicit face recognition in participants with ASD and in an intelligence quotient-matched non-ASD control group. Differences in eye movement indices between target and foil faces were used as an indicator of implicit face recognition. Explicit face recognition was assessed using old-new discrimination and reaction time measures. Stimuli were

Face emotion recognition is related to individual differences in psychosis-proneness.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in face emotion recognition (FER) in schizophrenia are well documented, and have been proposed as a potential intermediate phenotype for schizophrenia liability. However, research on the relationship between psychosis vulnerability and FER has mixed findings and methodological limitations. Moreover, no study has yet characterized the relationship between FER ability and level of psychosis-proneness. If FER ability varies continuously with psychosis-proneness, this suggests a relationship between FER and polygenic risk factors. METHOD: We tested two large internet samples

Temporal characteristics of top-down modulations during working memory maintenance: an event-related potential study of the N170 component.

We investigated the top-down influence of working memory (WM) maintenance on feedforward perceptual processing within occipito-temporal face processing structures. During event-related potential (ERP) recordings, subjects performed a delayed-recognition task requiring WM maintenance of faces or houses. The face-sensitive N170 component elicited by delay-spanning task-irrelevant grayscale noise probes was examined. If early feedforward perceptual activity is biased by maintenance requirements, the N170 ERP component elicited by probes should have a greater N170 amplitude response during face re
