POSTURAL CONTROL ASSESSMENT IN PHYSICALLY ACTIVE AND SEDENTARY INDIVIDUALS WITH PARAPLEGIA.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate functional independence and trunk control during maximum-range tasks in individuals with spinal cord injuries, who were divided into sedentary (SSI, n=10) and physically active (PASI, n=10) groups . METHODS: Anamnesis was conducted and level and type of injury were identified (according to the American Spinal Injury Association protocol, ASIA) and the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) questionnaire was applied. For the forward and lateral reach task, the subjects were instructed to reach as far as possible. Mean data were compared using the

Cerebral gray matter changes in persistent postural perceptual dizziness.

BACKGROUND: Persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is the most common vestibular syndrome in middle-aged patients. Multisensory maladjustment involving alterations of sensory response pattern including vestibular, visual and motion stimuli is thought to be a key pathophysiological correlate of this disorder. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify regional gray matter changes in PPPD patients that might be involved in the underlying pathophysiology of this disorder. METHODS: 42 PPPD patients and healthy age and gender matched controls were investigated using magnetic resonance imaging-based

Postural Performance at Different Breathing Strategies in Patients with Limitation of Mobility.

We investigated the effect of different breathing strategies on postural performance in the patients with joint mobility limitations. The amplitude and velocity of thecenter-of-pressure movements in the frontal.and sagittal planes were measured by the force platform in48 healthy volunteers. The stability of vertical posture was estimated during normal breathing, inspiratory and expiratory breath holding and hyperventilation with immobilization of the neck, trunk, hip and knee joints, and without immobilization. In general, the restriction of mobility caused a reduction in the postural stabilit…

Altered postural sway following fatiguing foot muscle exercises.

This study investigated the acute effects of fatiguing foot muscle exercises on the maximum muscle strength of the foot and postural control ability. Eighteen healthy young individuals performed fatiguing foot muscle strength exercises, and their toe flexor and ankle plantar flexor strength and postural control ability were measured before and after the exercises. Postural control ability was evaluated using the path of the center of pressure (COP) during three balance tasks: double-leg standing with eyes open; double-leg standing with eyes closed; and single-leg standing with eyes open. After

Lumbar spine postures in Marines during simulated operational positions.

Low back pain has a 70% higher prevalence in members of the armed forces than in the general population, possibly due to the loads and positions soldiers experience during training and combat. Although the influence of heavy load carriage on standing lumbar spine posture in this population is known, postures in other operationally relevant positions are unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to characterize the effect of simulated military operational positions under relevant loading conditions on global and local lumbar spine postures in active duty male US Marines. Secondary objec…

The association between infantile postural asymmetry and unsettled behaviour in babies.

UNLABELLED: Unsettled infant behaviour is a common problem of infancy without known aetiology or clearly effective management. Some manual therapists propose that musculoskeletal dysfunction contributes to unsettled infant behaviour, yet reported improvement following treatment is anecdotal. The infantile postural asymmetry measurement scale is a tool which measures infantile asymmetry, a form of musculoskeletal dysfunction. The first part of the study aimed to investigate its reliability and validity for measuring infantile postural asymmetry. This study also aimed to investigate whether ther

Velocity dependence of vestibular information for postural control on tilting surfaces.

Vestibular information is known to be important for postural stability on tilting surfaces, but the relative importance of vestibular information across a wide range of surface tilt velocities is less clear. We compared how tilt velocity influences postural orientation and stability in nine subjects with bilateral vestibular loss and nine age-matched, control subjects. Subjects stood on a force platform that tilted 6 deg, toes-up at eight velocities (0.25 to 32 deg/s), with and without vision. Results showed that visual information effectively compensated for lack of vestibular information at

Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness: A Matter of Higher, Central Dysfunction?

OBJECTIVE: Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is the most common vestibular disorder in the age group between 30 and 50 years. It is considered to be based on a multisensory maladjustment involving alterations of sensory response pattern including vestibular, visual and motion stimuli. Previous data supported a link between vestibular and pain mechanism. The aim of the study was to investigate whether other sensory inputs such as pain stimuli might be altered in terms of a more widespread central perception dysfunction in this disorder. METHODS: Nociceptive blink reflex was measu

The Dermatological Manifestations of Postural Tachycardia Syndrome: A Review with Illustrated Cases.

Postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a syndrome of excessive tachycardia with orthostatic challenge, and relief of such symptoms with recumbence. There are several proposed subtypes of the syndrome, each with unique pathophysiology. Numerous symptoms such as excessive tachycardia, lightheadedness, blurry vision, weakness, fatigue, palpitations, chest pain, and tremulousness are associated with orthostatic intolerance. Other co-morbid conditions associated with POTS are not clearly attributable to orthostatic intolerance. These include chronic headache, fibromyalgia, functional gastrointesti

Postural Consequences of Cervical Sagittal Imbalance: A Novel Laboratory Model.

STUDY DESIGN: A biomechanical study using human spine specimens. OBJECTIVE: To study postural compensations in lordosis angles that are necessary to maintain horizontal gaze in the presence of forward head posture and increasing T1 sagittal tilt. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Forward head posture relative to the shoulders, assessed radiographically using the horizontal offset distance between the C2 and C7 vertebral bodies (C2-C7 [sagittal vertical alignment] SVA), is a measure of global cervical imbalance. This may result from kyphotic alignment of cervical segments, muscle imbalance, as well…

Usefulness of intermuscular coherence and cumulant analysis in the diagnosis of postural tremor.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential value of two advanced EMG measures as additional diagnostic measures in the polymyographic assessment of postural upper-limb tremor. METHODS: We investigated coherence as a measure of dependency between two EMG signals, and cumulant analysis to reveal patterns of synchronicity in EMG activity in muscle pairs. Eighty datasets were analyzed retrospectively, obtained from four groups: essential tremor (ET), Parkinson's disease (PD), enhanced physiological tremor (EPT), and functional tremor (FT). RESULTS: Intermuscular coherence was highest in the PD grou

Simultaneous Postural Adjustments (SPA) scrutinized using the Lissajous method.

The goal of this research was to study the postural adjustments that occur during the course of a voluntary movement (Simultaneous Postural Adjustments: SPA). A pointing task performed at maximal velocity was considered and upper limb kinematics and body kinetics were recorded. A 2-DOF model was elaborated that distinguishes between the body segments that are mobilized in order to perform the pointing movement. These segments are the right upper limb (termed the “focal” component) and the rest of the body (termed the “postural” component). This model allowed for the calculation of both sub-sys

Sympathetic dysfunction in vasovagal syncope and the postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.

Orthostatic intolerance is the inability to tolerate the upright posture and is relieved by recumbence. It most commonly affects young women and has a major impact on quality of life and psychosocial well-being. Several forms of orthostatic intolerance have been described. The most common one is the recurrent vasovagal syncope (VVS) phenotype which presents as a transient and abrupt loss of consciousness and postural tone that is followed by rapid recovery. Another common type of orthostatic intolerance is the postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) which is characterized by an excess…

Motion control, motion sickness, and the postural dynamics of mobile devices.

Drivers are less likely than passengers to experience motion sickness, an effect that is important for any theoretical account of motion sickness etiology. We asked whether different types of control would affect the incidence of motion sickness, and whether any such effects would be related to participants' control of their own bodies. Participants played a video game on a tablet computer. In the Touch condition, the device was stationary and participants controlled the game exclusively through fingertip inputs via the device's touch screen. In the Tilt condition, participants held the device
