The most common causes auf sensorineural deafness lie in the cochlea. Other causes are less numerous, such that our presentation will be limited to cochleal disturbances. In a general introduction we shall attempt to analyse the structural reactions, metabolism and circulation of the cochlea and the behaviour of the inner ear lymph to a noxa. The monotony of the reactions will be described as well as the reversibility of some of the changes which are observed. All these reactions play a part in the normal functioning of the inner ear. The special part of the presentation will discuss the diffe

The noise-induced permanent threshold shift (NIPTS) resultings form up to ten years of exposure to an average A-weighted sound level Leq of 89 dB was investigated. Prior occupational noise exposure was controlled for by eliminating subjects with previous high-noise-level jobs or uncertain exposure histories. The final population consisted of 42 males and 58 females working a steady-state broadband noise environments. No attempt was made to screen subjects for any auditory pathology. A 222-subject control group from the same geographic area as the exposed subjects was selected such that none of

A study was made on human temporal bones to elucidate the effects of aging on the auditory system. Ninety-six ears from 68 individuals, varying in age from infancy to 84 years, served as 'normal ears'. None of these cases had clinical or pathological evidence of specific ear diseases. 'Pathological ears' consisted of 89 ears from 58 individuals which exhibited slowly progressive hearing loss, and which had no specific known cause for the loss. Two aging phenomena were found to affect the human ear. The first is physiological, and has been called 'auditory senility'. It involves all the differe

Age-related hearing loss is a complex disease caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, and a study have conducted animal experiments to explore the association between BCL11B heterozygosity and age-related hearing loss. The present study used established genetic models to examine the association between BCL11B gene polymorphisms and age-related hearing loss. A total of 410 older adults from two communities in Qingdao, China, participated in this study. The case group comprised individuals aged ≥ 60 years with age-related hearing loss, and the control group comprised indivi

Age-related hearing loss has been associated with increased recruitment of frontal brain areas during speech perception to compensate for the decline in auditory input. This additional recruitment may bind resources otherwise needed for understanding speech. However, it is unknown how increased demands on listening interact with increasing cognitive demands when processing speech in age-related hearing loss. The current study used a full-sentence working memory task manipulating demands on working memory and listening and studied untreated mild to moderate hard of hearing (n = 20) and normal-h

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to identify the effects of auditory deprivation (age-related hearing loss) and auditory stimulation (history of hearing aid use) on the neural registration of sound across two stimulus presentation conditions: (1) equal sound pressure level and (2) equal sensation level.
DESIGN: We used a between-groups design, involving three groups of 14 older adults (n = 42; 62 to 84 years): (1) clinically defined normal hearing (≤25 dB from 250 to 8000 Hz, bilaterally), (2) bilateral mild-moderate/moderately severe sensorineural hearing loss who have never used heari

Recent electrophysiological studies have provided evidence that changes in multisensory processing in auditory cortex cannot only be observed following extensive hearing loss, but also in moderately hearing-impaired subjects. How the reduced auditory input affects audio-visual interactions is however largely unknown. Here we used a cross-modal distraction paradigm to investigate multisensory processing in elderly participants with an age-related high-frequency hearing loss as compared to young and elderly subjects with normal hearing. During the experiment, participants were simultaneously pre

Age-related hearing loss (presbyacusis) has a complex etiology. Results from animal models detailing the effects of specific cochlear injuries on audiometric profiles may be used to understand the mechanisms underlying hearing loss in older humans and predict cochlear pathologies associated with certain audiometric configurations ("audiometric phenotypes"). Patterns of hearing loss associated with cochlear pathology in animal models were used to define schematic boundaries of human audiograms. Pathologies included evidence for metabolic, sensory, and a mixed metabolic + sensory phenotype; an o

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate predictors of change in pure-tone hearing thresholds in older adults.
METHODS: Data were drawn from a pooled sample from the Dynamic Analyses to Optimise Ageing (DYNOPTA) project (N = 4,221, mean age = 73.6, range: 50-103 years). Pure-tone hearing thresholds were tested for frequencies between 0.5 and 8 kHz, on up to four occasions over a period of 11 years. Linear mixed models tested for predictors of change in hearing.
RESULTS: Hearing loss for high-range frequencies preceded decline in low-range frequencies. Men had higher baseline hearing thresholds, b

INTRODUCTION: Tff3 peptide exerts important functions in cytoprotection and restitution of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract epithelia. Moreover, its presence in the rodent inner ear and involvement in the hearing process was demonstrated recently. However, its role in the auditory system still remains elusive. Our previous results showed a deterioration of hearing with age in Tff3-deficient animals.
RESULTS: Present detailed analysis of auditory brain stem response (ABR) measurements and immunohistochemical study of selected functional proteins indicated a normal function and phenotype of the

The aims of this study were to explore the correlation between DPOAE adaptation magnitude in three different guinea pig strains to examine if the genetic component affects the DPOAE adaptation magnitude. It was also to investigate the correlation between strains with certain characteristics i.e. reduced susceptibility to noise, and early onset of age-dependent hearing loss and the DPOAE adaptation magnitude. The animals were anaesthetized and the 2f1-f2 DPOAE (f1=8k Hz, and f2/f1=1.2) adaptation was established with a minimum of 144 combinations of f1; f2 where f1 was held fixed and f2 was var

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) in response to sound stimulation (500 Hz tone burst, 129 dB SPL) were studied in 1000 consecutive patients. VEMP from the ear with the larger amplitude were evaluated based on the assumption that the majority of the tested patients probably had normal vestibular function in that ear. Patients with known bilateral conductive hearing loss, with known bilateral vestibular disease and those with Tullio phenomenon were not included in the evaluation. It was found that there was an age-related decrease in VEMP amplitude and an increase in VEMP latency tha

UNLABELLED: Aging is a natural consequence of a society developing process. The city of São Paulo has almost one million people who are above sixty years of age. Age-related hearing loss equals the total hearing loss resulted from cell degeneration caused by noise exposure, ototoxic agents and the loss caused by disorders and medical treatments.
AIM: To study age-related hearing degeneration by means of higher thresholds and hearing sensitivity measures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional contemporary cohort study in which we assessed 211 elderly patients with mean age of 75.24 years, of

The objective of this study was to describe and better understand the factors that influence the use of assistance technologies by older adults who have a hearing loss. We were interested in adopting a methodological approach that would provide an in-depth account of individual experiences related to the use of these technologies. A qualitative research design was therefore selected. Audio-recorded interviews were conducted with ten individuals who were 65 years of age or older and were current successful assistance technology users. Thematic analysis was used to draw meaning from the intervie

Mice, in which the genetics can be manipulated and the life span is relatively short, enable evaluation of the effects of specific gene expression on cochlear degeneration over time. Antioxidant enzymes such as Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) protect cells from toxic, reactive oxygen species and may be involved in age-related degeneration. The effects of SOD1 deletion and over-expression on the cochlea were examined in Sod1-null mice, Sod1 transgenic mice and in age- and genetics-matched controls. Auditory brainstem responses (ABR) were measured and cochleae were histologically examined. The

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent developments in age-related hearing loss (ARHL) are reviewed with an emphasis on their relation to the framework advocated by Schuknecht. More than a classification scheme, Schuknecht's typology incorporates testable hypotheses about the bases of ARHL. Since there is presently no widely accepted competing framework, research in this area should be aimed at supporting, modifying, or replacing Schuknecht scheme. Only recently has our understanding of cellular changes and gene/environment interactions in ARHL achieved the level needed for hypothesis-driven experiments in

The limited number of studies concerning the prevalence of hearing loss and vision impairment and their causes, and the lack of strategies to prevent or treat the deleterious effects of hearing loss and vision impairment, point to a significant gap in the knowledge base concerning aged minority populations. This cross-sectional study evaluated the relationship between vision and hearing impairment and psychological well-being among a sample of 988 elderly African American persons. Fair or poor vision or hearing was reported for 36.5% and 26% of our sample, respectively. Reported prevalence rat
