Uniform ionomer distribution and controlled sulfonate adsorption are critical for low-Pt-loading proton exchange membrane fuel-cell membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), especially at high current density. In conventional Pt/C catalysts, differences between Pt and carbon surfaces promote sulfonate adsorption on Pt and ionomer aggregation on carbon, thereby limiting proton and oxygen transport. Here we show that a single Co atom dipole layer covering Pt/C (SCDC-Pt) regulates the catalyst-ionomer interface through electrostatic attraction between positively charged Co sites and sulfonate groups.

Neurometabolic analysis is routinely performed using 13C NMR/MRS in conjunction with the administration of 13C-labeled tracers. Despite its widespread use, the low sensitivity of 13C NMR necessitates long acquisition times. To address this limitation, the present study introduces an indirect approach that uses a single 1H NMR acquisition to measure deuterium labeling by exploiting labeling at specific sites, thereby providing a novel and more efficient strategy for assessing neurometabolism. In this study, male SD rats were infused with [6,6'-2H2]glucose for 10-90 min, and the 2H labeling of c

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely used medications that alter gut microbiota. Given the high prevalence of colonic diverticulosis and its increasing incidence in younger populations, we investigated whether PPI use is associated with diverticulosis prevalence in an asymptomatic screening population. This retrospective observational study analyzed data from 6,153 asymptomatic individuals undergoing colorectal cancer screening in Austria. Colonoscopies assessed diverticulosis presence, while PPI use was determined via structured medical history. Statistical analyses, including Poisson reg

This Monte Carlo study investigated a dual head SPECT based system for prompt gamma (PG) range verification in proton therapy, focusing on energy window and collimator septal thickness effects on PG emission profiles and distal dose fall off. Using GATE, correlations between PG emissions (4.44, 5.24, 6.13 MeV) and proton depth-dose distributions were evaluated for 90-180 MeV beams in a PMMA phantom. Narrow (4.2-4.6, 5.0-5.4, 5.9-6.3 MeV) and broad (4.2-6.3 MeV) windows were studied. A dual head SPECT with parallel hole collimator (1-5 mm septa) was simulated. Image reconstruction used FBP and

There is increasing demand for quantitative measurements in neuroimaging research, including absolute quantification of regional myelin density. Fast whole-brain macromolecular proton fraction (MPF) imaging enables acquisition and reconstruction of quantitative maps of MPF, a biomarker of myelin, and has been used in many research applications. To date, no standard protocols have been published for parcellating MPF maps. FreeSurfer is a widely used software package for automated brain parcellation. It is designed for use with high-resolution T1-weighted anatomical images, typically acquired wi

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Prompt-gamma imaging (PGI) can detect deviations between planned and delivered proton spots. To date, PGI has been limited to body sites not influenced by regular motion or substantial intrafraction anatomical changes that can affect the proton range during treatment delivery. This study investigates the feasibility of time-resolved (4D) PGI treatment verification with a PGI slit camera, incorporating breathing motion in a first patient application.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Synchronously acquired beam delivery (log files), breathing phase and PGI data are evaluated in 3D

Fluorescent probes based on excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) have attracted considerable attention because of their large Stokes shifts and high sensitivity to the environment. However, their excited-state behavior in confined nucleic acid microenvironments remains unclear. Here, we introduced fisetin, an ESPT-active flavonoid fluorophore, into a DNA duplex containing an abasic site opposite thymine (AP-T DNA) and investigated its excited-state dynamics by ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy. Femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption measurements reveal that the proton-transfer tauto

Aqueous zinc-iodine (Zn-I2) batteries are promising candidates for safe and cost-effective energy storage, yet their practical application is limited by uncontrolled iodine speciation at electrified interfaces, driving severe polyiodide shuttling and parasitic reactions that cause rapid capacity fading. Existing strategies predominantly rely on static confinement or adsorption, which cannot adapt to evolving iodine speciation during charge-discharge, causing a trade-off between shuttle suppression and redox kinetics. In this study, we report a proton-switching strategy that regulates interfaci

Natural salts are ubiquitous in saline environments and atmospheric aerosols, where their surface chemistry influences multiphase reactions and chlorine activation. The release of chloride as reactive chlorine species affects tropospheric oxidation and ozone chemistry, yet the molecular-level processes governing chloride speciation near deliquescence remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate humidity-driven interfacial chemistry of a natural chloride-rich salt using ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscop

Ion acceleration in Z-pinch plasmas is traditionally linked to the axial direction of current. Here, we report the radial emission of MeV protons from a low-mass, hydrogen-containing X pinch. Proton energies up to 3 MeV are observed in a hybrid X pinch with a 30 μm polyethylene fiber at a 400 kA peak current. The low-mass load, correlation of protons with hard x-rays, and timing of hard x-ray emission point to proton acceleration driven by current disruption following fiber disintegration. A new insight into the acceleration mechanism arises from the use of an interelectrode gap that is too s…

Efficient acidic CO2 electroreduction is fundamentally challenged by the dominant hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and complex proton dynamics across different current densities. Existing catalyst-design strategies primarily optimize static adsorption energetics but rarely address the dynamic evolution of proton transport and interfacial water networks under operating conditions. Herein, we establish a proton-routing interface via integrating axial Cl ligands and in-plane B sites into Ni single-atom catalysts (SACs) to dynamically regulate proton transport and interfacial water structure unde

Selectively converting carbon dioxide (CO2) to ethanol via photocatalysis offers a sustainable means of storing solar energy in chemical bonds. However, its efficiency is limited by an inadequate proton supply from water oxidation to drive the carbon‑carbon (CC) coupling step. This inefficiency leads to poor ethanol selectivity and promotes a competing hydrogen evolution side reaction, ultimately restricting overall system performance. Here, we designed a ternary In(OH)3-Cu2O/PCN heterojunction as a functionally partitioned catalyst: Polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) acts as the photoelectron don

Due to a positive standard reaction Gibbs free energy (ΔrGm θ) of 237.1 kJ mol-1, electric energy input is indispensable for hydrogen production by conventional electrochemical water splitting. This energy requirement can be reduced by replacing the anodic oxygen evolution reaction to thermodynamic favorable small-molecules oxidation reactions. In this work, anodic formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR) in alkaline media was paired with cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media to establish a thermodynamically downhill system. The utilization of electrochemical neutralization e

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are associated with poor outcomes in cirrhosis. Comparing impact of PPI vs potassium-channel acid blockers (PCABs) is important. Patients with cirrhosis on PCABs vs PPIs were followed for outcomes (liver-related hospitalizations/complications, mortality, and infections). Groups were compared using adjusted/unadjusted Cox-proportional hazards at 6/12 months postinitiation. Overall, 35,056 patients (31,688 PPI, 3,368 PCAB) were included. Adjusted analysis showed lower 6/12-month outcomes with vonoprazan vs PPI for mortality (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]-0.36/0.39), i

Methanol decomposition is a benchmark reaction for understanding surface-mediated redox chemistry and photocatalytic processes on oxide materials. While its mechanism on TiO2 has been extensively studied under ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) conditions, the reaction pathway under ambient, liquid-phase environments remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the photocatalytic decomposition of methanol on rutile TiO2(110) following direct adsorption from liquid solution by combining surface-sensitive sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy with density functional theory (DFT) calculations.
