AIMS: The aim of this study was to test a symptom cluster model in chronic kidney disease patients based on the Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms, accounting for the relationships between influencing factors, symptom experience and consequences for quality of life.
BACKGROUND: The evaluation of symptom clusters is a new field of scientific inquiry directed towards more focused symptom management. Yet, little is known about relationships between symptom clusters, predictors and the synergistic effect of multiple symptoms on outcomes.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional.
METHODS: Data were collected from 436

We report a novel approach to the determination of sleep apnea based on measuring the peripheral circulatory responses in a primary condition of disordered breathing. The apparatus is a finger plethysmograph coupled to a constant volume, variable pressure, pneumatic system. The plethysmograph's tip (measurement site) is composed of two parallel opposing longitudinal half thimbles, which is attached to a contiguous annular cuff. Each compartment consists of an internal membrane surrounded by an outer rigid wall. These provide a uniform pressure field and impart a two-point locking action preven

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sleep-related movement disorders (SRMD) include several different motor activities during sleep. Few of them are well kno … ts with PLM during polysomnography, other disorders associated with PLM need to be excluded, namely restless legs syndrome (RLS), narcolepsy, REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), and sleep-related breathing disorder. For the diagnosis of propriospinal myoclonus at sleep-onset, multi-channel surface electromyography recording during polysomnography is required and a possib …

Central sensitization syndromes and neuropathic pain are frequently associated with chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases such as psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Here, we analyzed the clinical significance of central sensitization (CS) and neuropathic pain, defined as the hyperexcitability of the central nervous system, in psoriasis and PsA patients. Our study included 50 patients with psoriasis aged 45.3 ± 14.4 years, 53 PsA patients aged 41.4 ± 12.7 years, and 50 healthy control group aged 40.7 ± 13.5 years (with similar age and body mass index distribution). OBJECTIVES: The number of studies on the frequency of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in subjects with sarcoidosis is low. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the frequency and predictors of OSA in subjects with clinically stable stage I and II sarcoidosis who were not taking corticosteroid and/or immunosuppressive drugs. We also evaluated restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic leg movements in sleep (PLMS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects with clinically stable stage I and II sarcoidosis and not receiving corticosteroid and/or immunosuppressive therapy were included in the study. Upper airwa…

Excessive daytime sleepiness is a growing societal problem in adolescents. Empirical evidence demonstrates that adolescents experience significant sleepiness as a result of inadequate or disrupted sleep. Although the functional impairment caused by sleepiness in the pediatric population is less studied, children and adolescents do experience changes in behavior and a decline in performance as seen in the adult population. The end result is functional impairment in adolescents, which then places them at higher risk for unintentional injury.

The "insomnia complaint" currently has a very high prevalence in the medical consulting room. This assumes that any doctor must have some basic notions of how to approach it. But currently, there are certain aspects that hinder this approach, especially when the "insomnia disorder" needs to be ruled out from the rest of the primary sleep disorders. This article aims to break with the terminological confusion that encompasses the concept of "insomnia", providing the definitions of the most correct terms to use. This will provide us with good tools for the correct collection of information, whic

STUDY OBJECTIVE: There is growing interest in the study of periodic limb movements during sleep and their potential clinical correlates. The aim of the present analysis is to address the lack of population-based studies using polysomnographic (PSG) measures to determine the prevalence of period limb movements during sleep in specific racial groups as well as the general population.
SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: A community-based sample of 592 participants drawn from the general population of tricounty Detroit (mean age = 41.9 +/- 12.6 years; 52.9% F; 31.5% African American). All individuals were

In this issue of Biomedical Journal we encounter the chemokine superfamily and its clinical potential. The time course from 56 days zero COVID-19 to a resurgence in cases is presented, as well as a possible solution to overcome rejection in vascularized composite allotransplantation. We are shown the opportunity deep learning (DL) offers in the case of tracking single cells and particles, and also use of DL to bring all hands on deck to counter the current challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic. This issue contains articles about the effect of low energy shock waves in cystitis; the negative effec

OBJECTIVE: In patients with bipolar disorder, olanzapine is commonly used to prevent episodes of acute mania. The drug pramipexole can, in theory, undermine the protective effect of olanzapine. Olanzapine is a dopamine D2 receptor antagonist and pramipexole is a mixed dopamine D2 /D3 receptor agonist. These drugs may therefore theoretically counteract their pharmacological effects. To date, there are no known cases in the literature where this interaction has been described.
METHODS: We report on a case where a patient with bipolar disorder developed mania after taking pramipexole in combinat

Over the last few years, a number of cases of extrapyramidal disorders associated with trimetazidine (TMZ) use has been reported. Here, we report on a series of 21 cases. All but one of the patients (mean age 74) had been taking TMZ for several years. The indication for prescription of TMZ could not be identified in seven cases. The TMZ-associated adverse drug reactions were typical parkinsonism (akinesia and/or rigidity and/or rest tremor) in 17 cases, gait disorders in three cases (one with orthostatic tremor), and restless leg syndrome in one case. Discontinuation of TMZ led to complete dis
