Prevalence and Determinants of Cervicovaginal, Oral, and Anal Human Papillomavirus Infection in a Population of Transgender and Gender Diverse People Assigned Female at Birth.

Purpose: The human papillomavirus (HPV) causes cervicovaginal, oral, and anogenital cancer, and cervical cancer screening options include HPV testing of a clinician-collected sample. Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people assigned female at birth (AFAB) face many barriers to preventive care, including cancer screening. Self-sampling options may increase access and participation in HPV testing and cancer screening. This study estimated the prevalence of HPV in self-collected cervicovaginal, oral, and anal samples from Midwestern TGD individuals AFAB. Methods: We recruited TGD individuals A

Strategies and implementation outcomes of HPV-based cervical screening studies to prevent cervical cancer in India: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: As Indian states consider HPV testing for cervical screening, there is a need to review evidence from prior studies to inform program design and evaluate implementation research gaps. DESIGN: We conducted a systematic review of original articles in Medline, Embase, Global Health and Web of Science, published from 2000 to May 4, 2024. Articles describing use of HPV as a primary cervical screening test in India, in either community-based programs for the general population, or among women living with HIV, were included. We describe approaches to invitation, education, screening, and

Contrasting Self-Perceived Need and Guideline-Based Indication for HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Among Young, Black Men Who Have Sex with Men Offered Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis in Atlanta, Georgia.

Despite high HIV incidence among young black men who have sex with men (YBMSM), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake in this group is low. In a cohort of HIV-negative YBMSM in Atlanta, GA, all participants were offered PrEP as standard of care with free clinician visits and laboratory testing. We explored self-perceived need for PrEP among 29 in-depth interview participants by asking about reasons for PrEP uptake or refusal and factors that may lead to future reconsideration. Self-perceived need was compared to US Center for Disease Control and Prevention guidance for clinical PrEP indicatio

Self-reported hepatitis C virus antibody status and risk behavior in young injectors.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to assess the accuracy of self-reported hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody (anti-HCV) serostatus in injection drug users (IDUs), and examine whether self-reported anti-HCV serostatus was associated with recent injection risk behavior. METHODS: In five U.S. cities (Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Seattle), 3,004 IDUs from 15 to 30 years old were recruited for a baseline interview to determine eligibility for a randomized controlled trial of a behavioral intervention. HIV and HCV antibody testing were performed, and subject data (e.g., demographi

Self-Efficacy Mediates the Dyadic Relationship Between Psychological Distress and Self-Care in Individuals With Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Their Caregivers.

Emotional distress is common among individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and their caregivers, potentially impairing illness management and daily functioning. The psychological mechanisms underlying how depression, anxiety, and stress influence self-care and caregiver contribution to self-care remain unclear in IBD dyads. This study examined the dyadic associations between emotional distress and self-care behaviours in IBD, testing the mediating role of self-efficacy in both patients and caregivers. A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted in accordance with STROBE guideli

Framing Effects on Decision-Making for Diagnostic Genetic Testing: Results from a Randomized Trial.

Genetic testing is increasingly part of routine clinical care. However, testing decisions may be characterized by regret as findings also implicate blood relatives. It is not known if genetic testing decisions are affected by the way information is presented (i.e., framing effects). We employed a randomized factorial design to examine framing effects on hypothetical genetic testing scenarios (common, life-threatening disease and rare, life-altering disease). Participants (n = 1012) received one of six decision frames: choice, default (n = 2; opt-in, opt-out), or enhanced choice (n = 3, based o

Expanding Germline Hereditary Cancer Gene Panel Testing by Nongenetics Providers: 3-Year Experience in Large Integrated Health Care Delivery System.

PURPOSE: Demand for germline hereditary cancer genetic testing has increased because of reduced cost, gene discovery, expanding indications, and precision cancer therapies. The traditional model for germline testing, where a genetics provider performs all steps of the testing process (pretest counseling, test ordering, results disclosure, and post-test counseling), is no longer able to meet testing needs especially for patients with cancer needing timely germline testing for treatment decisions. Mainstreaming has emerged as an alternative approach to increase testing capacity and efficiency, w

Social Support and Tinnitus Distress: The Importance of Developing Positive Psychological Qualities in Patients with Chronic Tinnitus.

INTRODUCTION: The role of social support in the relief of tinnitus distress and related mechanisms remains unclear. This study aimed to confirm a hypothesis that the influence of social support on tinnitus distress is mediated by resilience and self-esteem. METHODS: The Social Support Rating Scale, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Positive Version of Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Tinnitus Handicap Inventory were used to assess 296 patients who experience chronic subjective tinnitus. The collected data were subjected to correlational analysis, mediating effect testing, and structural equat

A longitudinal examination of loneliness in left-behind children: the interaction between self-esteem and academic self-efficacy matters.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness can cause severe mental and physical health problems and is of particular concern among vulnerable groups such as left-behind children. Research has suggested important person-level characteristics and attributes, such as self-esteem and self-efficacy, to be protective factors of loneliness in children. However, existing research is limited in the use of a cross-sectional design and the lack of consideration of the self-esteem × self-efficacy interaction on loneliness, as well as the potential divergent effects of domain-specific (e.g., general vs. academic) self-efficac

Cervical cancer screening preference among Inuit women in Nunavik, Quebec.

Self-sampling for oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) offers an alternative to the Papanicolaou (Pap) test for cervical cancer screening. We aimed to assess Inuit women's cervical cancer screening preferences. Eligible Inuit women aged between 25 and 65 in 2022-2023 were given the choice between self-sampling, sampling performed solely by the nurse or the Pap test and were administered a questionnaire on screening preference. Thematic analysis was performed on qualitative data collected through a questionnaire asking if and why women prefer HPV self-sampling or the Pap test for cervical cance

The role of self-criticism and self-compassion in the development of PTSD among midwives.

OBJECTIVE: Healthcare providers might develop emotional distress following direct and indirect exposure to traumatic events. Evidence shows that midwives, who care for women in complicated situations, are often exposed to circumstances that have a potential to lead to a variety of psychological reactions, including symptoms identified with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Nevertheless, the positive-healthy context in which childbirth is mainly perceived raises questions regarding the protective role of personality traits, which are related to processing methods of stress and pain, in the

Working memory capacity in generalized social phobia.

Research suggests that understanding complex social cues depends on the availability of cognitive resources (e.g., Phillips, Channon, Tunstall, Hedenstrom, & Lyons, 2008). In spite of evidence suggesting that executive control functioning may impact anxiety (e.g., Eysenck, Derakshan, Santos, & Calvo, 2007), relatively few studies have examined working memory in individuals with generalized social phobia. Moreover, few studies have examined the role of threat-relevant content in working memory performance in clinically anxious populations. To this end, the present study assessed working memory

Regional differences in awareness and attitudes regarding genetic testing for disease risk and ancestry.

Little is known about the lay public's awareness and attitudes concerning genetic testing and what factors influence their perspectives. The existing literature focuses mainly on ethnic and socioeconomic differences; however, here we focus on how awareness and attitudes regarding genetic testing differ by geographical regions in the US. We compared awareness and attitudes concerning genetic testing for disease risk and ancestry among 452 adults (41% Black and 67% female) in four major US cities, Norman, OK; Cincinnati, OH; Harlem, NY; and Washington, DC; prior to their participation in genetic

Hidden heterogeneity: Uncovering patterns of adherence in microbicide trials for HIV prevention.

BACKGROUND: Interpretation of clinical trial results testing vaginal microbicide gels for HIV prevention depends on participant adherence. Prior to the era of antiretrovirals, microbicide trials collected adherence data via self-report, and trials typically reported trial population adherence as overall averages in primary results manuscripts. This study first sought to determine if different patterns of adherence from three trials of vaginal microbicide gels could be identified, using self-reported data and if so, how those patterns compare across trials. The second objective was to explore w

Testing, diagnosis, and treatment following the implementation of a program to provide dried blood spot testing for HIV and hepatitis C infections: the NSW DBS Pilot.

BACKGROUND: Dried blood spot (DBS) testing provides an alternative to phlebotomy and addresses barriers to accessing healthcare experienced by some key populations. Large-scale evaluations of DBS testing programs are needed to understand their feasibility. This study evaluated the implementation of a state-wide DBS HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing pilot. METHODS: The New South Wales (NSW) DBS Pilot is an interventional cohort study of people testing for HIV antibody and/or HCV RNA from DBS samples in NSW, Australia. Participants at risk of HIV/HCV participated in testing via: 1) self-r

A crowdsourced intervention to promote hepatitis B and C testing among men who have sex with men in China: study protocol for a nationwide online randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends all men who have sex with men (MSM) receive Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) testing. MSM in China are a high-risk group for HBV and HCV infection, but test uptake is low. Crowdsourcing invites a large group to solve a problem and then shares the solution with the public. This nationwide online randomized controlled trial will evaluate the effectiveness of a crowdsourced intervention to increase HBV and HCV testing among MSM in China. METHODS: Seven hundred MSM will be recruited through social media operated by MSM organi
