Planning chemotherapy based schistosomiasis control: validation of a mathematical model using data on Schistosoma haematobium from Pemba, Tanzania.

A mathematical model, based on a deterministic differential equation framework, has been developed to predict the impact of community chemotherapy programmes for human schistosomiasis. Here, this model is validated using data collected from a long-term control programme for urinary schistosomiasis on the island of Pemba, Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania, initiated in 1986 and still ongoing, in which schoolchildren were offered praziquantel chemotherapy every 6 months. Prevalence of infection and blood in urine were monitored in all the schools (total 26000 children from 60 schools) and mo

Vegetables, fruit, and cancer prevention: a review.

In this review of the scientific literature on the relationship between vegetable and fruit consumption and risk of cancer, results from 206 human epidemiologic studies and 22 animal studies are summarized. The evidence for a protective effect of greater vegetable and fruit consumption is consistent for cancers of the stomach, esophagus, lung, oral cavity and pharynx, endometrium, pancreas, and colon. The types of vegetables or fruit that most often appear to be protective against cancer are raw vegetables, followed by allium vegetables, carrots, green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, and t

A standardized schedule for burden on the family of sickle-cell anaemia sufferers.

The chronicity and incurability of sickle cell anaemia reinforce the need to give particular attention to the psychosocial effect of the illness on the family. A 22-item schedule of burden with very high inter-rater reliability and modest validity is constructed and should be useful in the assessment of other similar chronic disorders. The phylogenetic origin of sickle-cell anaemia makes it essential that a psychological understanding of the disorder should be a component of the therapy arsenal of health professionals serving populations of African extraction.

Management of phosgene-induced acute lung injury.

CONTEXT: Phosgene is a substance of immense importance in the chemical industry. Because of its widespread industrial use, there is potential for small-scale exposures within the workplace, large-scale accidental release, or even deliberate release into a built-up area. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to examine all published studies concerning potential treatments for phosgene-induced acute lung injury and incorporate them into up-to-date clinical guidance. In addition, it aims to contrast the approaches when dealing with small numbers of patients known to be exposed (possibly with dose informat

"I will not accept to bury my pig": Taenia solium, WASH, and gender roles in the smallholder pork value chain in Southern Province, Rwanda.

Taenia solium is a zoonotic cestode and the causative agent of human taeniasis/cysticercosis and porcine cysticercosis. The burden in Rwanda is significant, including death and disability in people and income losses across the pork sector. Despite widespread recognition on the need for multi-sectoral and inclusive T. solium control programming, little is known about water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) access and gendered disease exposure among rural smallholders involved in the formal and informal pork sectors. This study aimed to characterize gender roles and WASH access in the Nyamagabe Dis

Taurine supplementation and systemic lupus erythematosus in preclinical studies: a systematic review of clinical outcomes and underlying mechanisms.

Taurine (Tau) is a sulfur-containing amino acid that has therapeutic roles in several diseases, including inflammatory conditions. The involvement of Tau in modulating systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) autoimmunity has been indicated in preclinical models, but reports are contradictory. This systematic review aimed to summarize current research regarding the potential role of Tau in SLE, to notice knowledge gaps, and to offer suggestions for the way ahead. The literature search was carried out using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases until October 2025. Search alert

From farm to slaughter: integrating welfare, pre-slaughter logistics and health data to explain carcass outcomes in commercial pigs.

Carcass traits such as slaughter weight, lean meat percentage, and meat colour are key determinants of profitability and consumer acceptance in pork production. This study integrated on-farm welfare assessments, management routines, preslaughter conditions, and health findings at slaughter to evaluate their combined effects on carcass outcomes in Norwegian pig herds. Data from 8 473 pigs were analysed using mixed models. The mean slaughter weight was 83.0 ± 0.1 kg, lean meat percentage 60.4 ± 0.0%, and meat colour score 48.2 ± 0.1 on the GP7 optical-probe scale, on which higher values indicate

Two for the price of one: should donovanosis and chancroid be targeted for eradication?

Half a century after smallpox eradication, this feat has not been repeated, although there is hope for the Guinea worm. This article examines whether two uncommon genital ulcerative diseases, donovanosis and chancroid, should be targeted for eradication. Many think that their decline has been such that they might be heading towards spontaneous eradication, following more effective treatments, integration of sexually transmitted infection management in primary healthcare, enhanced condom use by sex workers and promotion of male circumcision. However, examples of syphilis and mpox suggest sponta

Antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia Coli and Salmonella in poultry production and spread and effect in the one health framework.

Antimicrobial resistance in poultry-associated Escherichia coli and Salmonella poses a significant threat to animal, food, and public health, particularly when viewed through the One Health framework. Consider the statistics: global data reveal substantial resistance to tetracyclines (45-92 %), aminopenicillins (38-85 %), sulfonamides (40-78 %), and fluoroquinolones (25-68 %). Additionally, a considerable proportion of isolates (32-74 %) exhibit multidrug resistance. However, the manifestation of this resistance varies widely both between and within countries, influenced by factors such as ant

Automated quantification of lung pathology on micro-CT in diverse disease models using deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Micro-CT significantly enhances the efficiency, predictive power and translatability of animal studies to human clinical trials for respiratory diseases. However, the analysis of large micro-CT datasets remains a bottleneck. METHODS: We developed a generic deep learning (DL)-based lung segmentation model using longitudinal micro-CT images from studies of Down syndrome, viral and fungal infections, and exacerbation with variable lung pathology and degree of disease burden. 2D models were trained with cross-validation on axial, coronal and sagittal slices. Predictions from these sin

A retrospective study of the prevalence in equine postmortems of cranial mesenteric arteritis caused by Strongylus vulgaris in Alberta (2010 to 2022).

BACKGROUND: Strongylus vulgaris is one of the most pathogenic nematodes affecting equids. Larval migration through the cranial mesenteric artery (CMA) with attendant arteritis and thromboembolism can result in fatal non-strangulating intestinal infarction. Once considered a historical disease, recent studies have described the reemergence of this pathogen in several European countries; however, little is known of the current prevalence of S. vulgaris in the Canadian horse population. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of active S. vulgaris cranial mesenteric arteritis in horses submitted

Evaluation of forensic cases presented to the pediatric emergency department.

OBJECTIVE: Child forensic cases constitute an essential part of emergency presentations. The most crucial point is that the correct planning of protective and preventive activities depends on the correct analysis of the problem; therefore, there is a need for studies on childhood forensic cases. This study aimed to obtain data on the etiological characteristics of forensic cases presented to the pediatric emergency department. We believe that the collected data will guide the social measures in preventing forensic cases. METHODS: This retrospective study consists of forensic cases aged from 1

Workers' compensation claim counts and rates by injury event/exposure among state-insured private employers in Ohio, 2007-2017.

INTRODUCTION: This study analyzed workers' compensation (WC) claims among private employers insured by the Ohio state-based WC carrier to identify high-risk industries by detailed cause of injury. METHODS: A machine learning algorithm was used to code each claim by U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) event/exposure. The codes assigned to lost-time (LT) claims with lower algorithm probabilities of accurate classification or those LT claims with high costs were manually reviewed. WC data were linked with the state's unemployment insurance (UI) data to identify the employer's industry and numb

Modeling the spatial distribution of anthrax in southern Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Anthrax is an important zoonotic disease in Kenya associated with high animal and public health burden and widespread socio-economic impacts. The disease occurs in sporadic outbreaks that involve livestock, wildlife, and humans, but knowledge on factors that affect the geographic distribution of these outbreaks is limited, challenging public health intervention planning. METHODS: Anthrax surveillance data reported in southern Kenya from 2011 to 2017 were modeled using a boosted regression trees (BRT) framework. An ensemble of 100 BRT experiments was developed using a variable set

The anti-adhesive effect of anti-VEGF agents in experimental models: A systematic review.

Adhesions constitute a major problem in abdominal-pelvic and thoracic surgery with significant impact in the postoperative quality of life and healthcare services utilization. Adhesiogenesis is the result of increased fibrin formation, impaired fibrinolysis, angiogenesis, and fibrosis. Despite the recent advancements, the ideal anti-adhesive agent remains to be determined. To this end, we performed a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus databases to identify studies investigating the antiadhesive role of anti-VEGF agents in peritoneal, pleural, and pericardial experime

Japanese encephalitis vaccination in pregnancy among U.S. active duty military women.

INTRODUCTION: Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine is an inactivated vaccine that has shown no risks in pregnancy in animal models, but epidemiologic studies are lacking. U.S. military service members located in JE endemic regions are required to be vaccinated; understanding the potential adverse events (AEs), including AEs that may occur in pregnancy, is needed. Here, we assessed pregnancy and infant health outcomes in association with JE vaccination in pregnancy. METHODS: The study population consisted of 192,570 pregnancies to active duty women (2003-2014), captured in the Department of Defe
