Endocrine Responses to Exercise in the Developing Child and Adolescent.

The impact of exercise training on the neuroendocrine control of the pituitary in the developing child is complex and the exact mechanisms are not fully understood. Multiple determinants influence adaptive hypothalamic-pituitary secretory responses to physical stress, namely, training intensity and duration, nutrition and energy balance, gender, age, sex, and sexual maturation status. The increase in growth hormone (GH) in response to acute exercise is dependent on pubertal status; children in more advanced pubertal stages respond with larger peak GH concentrations compared to those in earlier…

Klinefelter syndrome and fertility: sperm preservation should not be offered to children with Klinefelter syndrome.

STUDY QUESTION: Should fertility preservation be offered to children with Klinefelter syndrome (KS)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Current evidence shows that fertility preservation should not be offered to adolescents with KS younger than 16 years because of lower retrieval rates for germ cells by testicular sperm extraction (TESE) compared with retrieval rates for adolescents and adults between 16 and 30 years. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: KS, the most common chromosomal disorder in men leading to non-obstructive azoospermia, is caused by the presence of at least one additional X chromosome. The onset of pube

Two different patterns of mini-puberty in two 46,XY newborns with 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 3 deficiency.

We report two newborns with female external genitalia and bilateral inguinal swelling who were diagnosed with 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 3 deficiency, a rare cause of 46,XY disorder of sexual development. The first case had normal clitoral size and vaginal and urethral openings, palpable gonads in the inguinal region, low testosterone, and low levels of basal and GNRH-stimulated gonadotropin. The second case had similar external genitalia, low testosterone but borderline basal and normal stimulated gonadotropin levels. Low testosterone/androstenedione ratios (0.22 and 0.24, respecti

Recent Advances in Developmental and Risk Factor Research on Eating Disorders.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (i.e., DSM-5) currently recognizes three primary eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. The origins of eating disorders are complex and remain poorly understood. However, emerging research highlights a dimensional approach to understanding the multifactorial etiology of eating disorders as a means to inform assessment, prevention, and treatment efforts. Guided by research published since 2011, this review summarizes recent findings elucidating risk factors for the development of eating disorders

Consequences of Early Life Programing by Genetic and Environmental Influences: A Synthesis Regarding Pubertal Timing.

Sexual maturation is closely tied to growth and body weight gain, suggesting that regulative metabolic pathways are shared between somatic and pubertal development. The pre- and postnatal environment affects both growth and pubertal development, indicating that common pathways are affected by the environment. Intrauterine and early infantile developmental phases are characterized by high plasticity and thereby susceptibility to factors that affect metabolic function as well as related reproductive function throughout life. In children born small for gestational age, poor nutritional conditions…

KISS1 gene expression in the developing brain of female pigs in pre- and peripubertal periods.

Puberty is associated with an increase in gonadotropin secretion as a result of an increase in gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion. Kisspeptin is considered to play a key role in puberty onset in many mammalian species, including rodents, ruminants and primates. The present study aimed to determine if changes in hypothalamic expression of the KISS1 gene, encoding kisspeptin, are associated with the onset of puberty in pigs. The animals (n=4 in each group) were perfused with 4% paraformaldehyde at 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 months old, as prepubertal stages, and at 5 months old, as the peripu

Prepubertal gonadectomy in cats: different surgical techniques and comparison with gonadectomy at traditional age.

Feasibility, surgical time and complications of different surgical techniques for prepubertal gonadectomy (PPG; 8-12 weeks of age) in cats were studied and compared to gonadectomy at traditional age (TAG; 6-8 months of age). Kittens were randomly assigned to PPG or TAG. Ovarian pedicle haemostasis for PPG was achieved by ligatures (n=47), vascular clips (n=50), bipolar electrocoagulation (n=50), or pedicle tie (n=50); for TAG (n=34) ligatures were used. In male cats, PPG consisted of closed castration by spermatic cord knot (n=92) or ligature (n=91) while TAG (n=34) was an open castration by s

Impact of maternal physical activity during gestation on porcine fetal, neonatal, and adolescent ovarian development.

To determine how exercise from mid to late (days 40-104) gestation impacts offspring body, uterine and ovarian weight, and ovarian cell proliferation at three different developmental stages, Yorkshire gilts were either exercised by walking (EX) or not exercised (CON). In parity 1, ovaries and uteri were collected from the heaviest (H) and lightest (L) neonates and adolescent (6 mo) offspring. In parity 2, mothers were assigned the same treatment groups, and ovaries and uteri were collected from H and L fetuses on day 94 of gestation. Body weight was greater (P < 0.02) for H than L fetuses and

Precocious puberty.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Precocious puberty continues to elicit great interest and concern among medical practitioners, as well as the public. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies have elucidated neural regulation of puberty by kisspeptin, neurokinin B, and other factors. Cohort studies from the North America and Europe suggest that the age of thelarche may be earlier than determined 2 decades ago, and menarche may be slightly earlier, but the causes are unclear. Long-term outcomes of gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog therapy demonstrate increases in final height in the youngest treated patients, with no a

Reproductive axis response to repeated lipopolysaccharide administration in peripubertal female rats.

Immune system disorders are often accompanied by alterations in the reproductive axis. Several reports have shown that administration of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) has central inflammatory effects and activates cytokine release in the hypothalamus where the luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (Gn-RH) neurons are located. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of repeated LPS administration on the neuroendocrine mechanisms of control of the reproductive axis in peripubertal female rats (30-day-old rats). With this aim, LPS (50 mug/kg weight) was administered to the a

Delayed puberty onset in rats that consumed aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa during the juvenile-pubertal period.

The report that intervention during the juvenile-pubertal period in rats modifies the phenotype induced by prenatal nutrition suggests some degree of plasticity in the juvenile-pubertal period. It is not known whether consumption of aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa (HS) during the juvenile-pubertal period will affect the growth and onset of puberty in rats. The present study was therefore designed to investigate this. Weaned 21-days-old rats, whose mothers were given food and water ad libitum during pregnancy and lactation, were divided randomly into three groups of nine rats each. Contr

Gender role across development in adults with 46,XY disorders of sex development including perineoscrotal hypospadias and small phallus raised male or female.

Self-rated degree of femininity and masculinity across development were evaluated for 40 adults affected by 46,XY disorders of sex development (DSDs) who presented at birth with a small phallus and perineoscrotal hypospadias, raised either male (n = 22) or female (n = 18). Most participants were confirmed or presumed to be affected by partial androgen insensitivity syndrome (n = 14), partial gonadal dysgenesis (n = 11), or were considered to have a poorly defined case of 46,XY DSD including ambiguous external genitalia (n = 15). Participants retrospectively evaluated their degree of masculinit

Pubertal growth of the medial amygdala delayed by short photoperiods in the Siberian hamster, Phodopus sungorus.

We investigated whether puberty influences the morphology of the medial nucleus of the amygdala (MeA) by comparing Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) that had been raised from birth in either long day (LD; 16:8 h light:dark) or short day (SD; 8:16) photoperiods. Hamsters were sacrificed at 42-49 days of age, at which point all LD hamsters were reproductively mature, as evidenced by adult-like testes weights (mean: 657 mg). In contrast, the testes weights of the SD hamsters were low (mean: 31 mg), indicating that the SD photoperiod had delayed puberty. The regional volume and mean soma size

Induction of precocious puberty in heifers II: advanced ovarian follicular development.

Precocious puberty can be induced in a majority of heifers weaned early and fed a high-concentrate diet. The objective of this experiment was to determine whether induction of precocious puberty is associated with an acceleration of ovarian maturation in heifers. Crossbred Angus and Simmental heifer calves were weaned at 104 +/- 2 (n = 18; early weaned) or 208 +/- 3 (n = 10; normal-weaned, NW) d of age. The early weaned heifers were fed a high-concentrate (60% corn; EWH, n = 9) or control diet (30% corn; EWC, n = 9). The NW heifers were also fed the control diet after weaning. Daily transrecta

Puberty and fertility in congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a disorder of adrenal steroid synthesis. The symptoms and signs of CAH depend on the degree of enzyme deficiency; severe salt-wasting (SW) form, less severe simple virilizing (SV) form and mild nonclassic (NC) form. In this paper, puberty and fertility in CAH are discussed. The time of onset of puberty and progress of pubertal development is quite normal, except in NC patients (earlier). Also the age of menarche in CAH girls is normal, but it can depend on the level of therapeutic control. In prepuberty, bone age is advanced. In puberty, peak height velo

New facets of androgen replacement therapy during childhood and adolescence.

The goals of androgen therapy for adolescents are to promote linear growth and secondary sexual characteristics, at the same time as permitting the normal accrual of muscle mass and bone mineral content. Secondary goals are mainly in the psychosocial sphere, in which pubertally delayed boys feel that they look too young, are not considered a 'peer' in their age group and have difficulty competing in athletic endeavours. These goals are irrespective of the causes of delayed pubertal development: constitutional delay of growth and puberty (CDGP), a transient but very common form of pubertal dela

Repeated exposure to social stress alters the development of agonistic behavior in male golden hamsters.

In male golden hamsters, exposure to social stress during puberty alters aggressive behavior. Interestingly, agonistic behavior undergoes two major transitions during puberty: a decline in attack frequency and a shift from play fighting to adult-like aggression. Based on previous observations, we developed an approach for characterizing offensive responses as play fighting or adult-like. The present studies had two aims. First, we validated our approach by looking at the development of attack types during puberty. Second, we looked at the effects of repeated social stress on the development of

Organochlorines affect the major androgenic hormone, testosterone, in male polar bears (Ursus maritimus) at Svalbard.

Normal sexual development and subsequent reproductive function are dependent on appropriate testosterone production and action. The regulation of steroid hormones, including androgens, can be influenced by both biological and environmental factors, including environmental chemicals. Concentrations of organochlorines are considerably greater in Svalbard polar bears than in polar bears from other regions. Between 1995 and 1998, samples were collected from 121 male polar bears (Ursus maritimus) from the Svalbard area. In this study, testosterone concentration variations were described for male po
