A cross-sectional survey of general practitioners' influenza vaccination willingness and influencing factors based on the reasoned action approach.

General practitioners (GPs) play a dual role in influenza prevention and control as both medical decision-makers and a high-risk population for infection. This study, based on the Reasoned Action Approach (RAA), aimed to explore GPs' influenza vaccination willingness and its influencing factors. Data were collected via an online questionnaire from February 11 to March 20, 2025, using convenience sampling. The questionnaire covered general profiles, influenza vaccination in the last season, vaccination willingness, and a RAA-based scales (including dimensions of attitude, subjective norms, and

Early-stage dementia and driving: what do older adults want to happen when driving is no longer safe?

Driving cessation in older adults with dementia is associated with reduced independence, social isolation, and accelerated cognitive decline, yet determining fitness to drive remains challenging. This qualitative study explored older adults' attitudes toward driving safety decisions and their preferred responses if informed that they may no longer be safe to drive. Twenty-two older adults, including individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) at risk for dementia and cognitively healthy controls, participated in walking-talking interviews following cognitive and hazard perception screenin

Deficits of facial emotion recognition and visual information processing in adult patients with classical galactosemia.

BACKGROUND: Classical galactosemia (CG) is due to a severe deficiency of the galactose-1-phosphate uridyl-transferase (GALT), the main enzyme of galactose metabolism. Even early introduction of galactose-restricted diet fails to prevent long-term complications, including cognitive impairment, neurological and psychiatric problems, osteoporosis, premature ovarian failure and infertility. Detailed neuropsychological phenotyping is needed in order to better understand the relevant neurodevelopmental deficiencies and to develop effective treatment strategies. AIM: To define specifically and signi

The importance of information and support following a suspected second-trimester anomaly that is later discarded: A qualitative study of women's experiences.

INTRODUCTION: A second-trimester anatomy scan may identify a suspected minor fetal anomaly and/or "soft marker," such as choroid plexus cysts or femoral shortening. Such findings can raise a medical concern, as they could indicate severe fetal disease; however, they are also often transient or a "false alarm." The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of pregnant women, where a medical concern was raised at the second-trimester ultrasound scan and later discarded after follow-up examinations and diagnostic testing. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study consists of qualitative, in-depth

Behavior change techniques to improve treatment adherence in type 2 diabetes: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive-behavioral interventions have shown positive results in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) self-management; however, the lack of detailed descriptions of these interventions makes their replication difficult. This study aims to identify behavioral change techniques (BCT) for improving adherence to medication, diet, and exercise in adults with T2DM. METHOD: We conducted a systematic search in June 2024 across PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and CINAHL to identify studies published since 2013 that examined BCTs aimed at improving treatment adherence in adults wi

COVID-19 Pandemic Experiences and Hazardous Alcohol Use: Findings of Higher and Lower Risk in a Heavy-Drinking Midwestern State.

This study assessed whether COVID-19 pandemic experiences were associated with excessive alcohol use during the first year of the pandemic in Iowa, a heavy-drinking midwestern US state. We analyzed survey data from 4047 adult residents of Iowa collected in August 2020, focusing on three pandemic-related stressors (e.g., emotional reactions to the pandemic; disruption of daily activities; and financial hardship) and salient social support. Using multiple logistic regression, we tested correlates of increased drinking, heavy drinking, and binge drinking, controlling for demographic characteristi

Family history of psychiatric conditions and development of siblings of children with autism.

Younger siblings (SIBS) of children with autism exhibit a wide range of clinical and subclinical symptoms including social, cognitive, language, and adaptive functioning delays. Identifying factors linked with this phenotypic heterogeneity is essential for improving understanding of the underlying biology of the heterogenous outcomes and for early identification of the most vulnerable SIBS. Prevalence of neurodevelopmental (NDD) and neuropsychiatric disorders (NPD) is significantly elevated in families of children with autism. It remains unknown, however, if the family history associates with

Underestimated economic and social burdens of non-Typhoidal Salmonella infections: The One Health perspective from Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The non-typhoidal salmonellosis (NTS) is a pathogenic bacterial zoonosis with substantial but often under-appreciated public health impacts. The NTS is prevalent in poultry and humans in Nigeria, yet its economic and social burden have not been determined through any empirical study. To bridge the gap, we evaluated the impact of NTS in social and economic terms. METHODS: Relevant population, economic and epidemiological data were retrieved from peer-reviewed publications, open sources and relevant authorities. Additional data were obtained through experts' opinions and field surve

Novel treatments in autism spectrum disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There are currently no approved medications for the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and only limited data on the management of co-occurring mental health and behavioural symptoms. The purpose of this review is to synthesize recent trials on novel treatments in ASD, with a focus on research trends in the past 2 years. RECENT FINDINGS: No new pharmacologic agents received regulatory approval for use in ASD. Several large randomized controlled trials (RCTs) had negative or ambiguous results (e.g. fluoxetine, oxytocin). A cross-over RCT of an oral cannabinoid s

Effects of weather-related social distancing on city-scale transmission of respiratory viruses: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Unusually high snowfall in western Washington State in February 2019 led to widespread school and workplace closures. We assessed the impact of social distancing caused by this extreme weather event on the transmission of respiratory viruses. METHODS: Residual specimens from patients evaluated for acute respiratory illness at hospitals in the Seattle metropolitan area were screened for a panel of respiratory viruses. Transmission models were fit to each virus to estimate the magnitude reduction in transmission due to weather-related disruptions. Changes in contact rates and care-s

The rare disease neurofibromatosis 1 as a source of hereditary economic inequality: Evidence from Finland.

PURPOSE: This study investigated whether individuals with neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) fare worse than individuals without NF1 in terms of economic well-being. NF1 is relatively common in the population and provides an informative case of a rare hereditary disease. METHODS: We examined a subset of 692 individuals with verified NF1 from the Finnish total population-based NF1 cohort and compared that with 7407 control individuals matched for age, sex, and municipality during 1997-2014. Economic well-being was operationalized with annual work earnings and total income, including social income trans

Postnatal anxiety prevalence, predictors and effects on development: A narrative review.

The increasing prevalence of postnatal anxiety highlights the need for summarizing the recent research on this condition to inform screening and intervention efforts. This narrative review of the literature was derived from a search on PubMed and PsycINFO for papers published since 2010. The demographic risk factors for postnatal anxiety include being a young mother, having more education and being employed. Childbirth risk factors include being primiparous in one sample and multiparous in another, caesarean delivery, fear of the birth and of death during delivery, lack of control during labor

Leadership is a conversation.

Globalization and new technologies have sharply reduced the efficacy of command-and-control management and its accompanying forms of corporate communication. In the course of a recent research project, the authors concluded that by talking with employees, rather than simply issuing orders, leaders can promote operational flexibility, employee engagement, and tight strategic alignment. Groysberg and Slind have identified four elements of organizational conversation that reflect the essential attributes of interpersonal conversation: intimacy, interactivity, inclusion, and intentionality. Intima

Everyday life for the spouses of patients with untreated OSA syndrome.

The aim of this study was to generate a theoretical model describing concerns for spouses of patients with untreated obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and how they manage these concerns in their everyday life. Twelve spouses were interviewed about their experiences and how they manage everyday life. The interviews were analysed according to the Grounded Theory method as described by Strauss and Corbin. Two main categories emerged from the data: 'Social adjustment' and 'New feelings'. 'Social adjustment' reveals how the spouses made adjustments in their daily lives, both according to the

Preference for aggressive and sexual stimuli in children with disruptive behavior disorder and normal controls.

Children with disruptive behavior disorders (DBD) have poor social skills and show aggressive interaction patterns. There is evidence from prospective studies of an association between early physical abuse, later social information-processing patterns, and aggressive behavior. A pattern of hypervigilance to hostile cues has been found in DBD children, but very few studies have investigated encoding or perceptual preference for specific classes of stimuli. Some DBD children have a suspected history of sexual abuse and a few have themselves been sexually offensive. Our belief that the sexuality

[Development in the National Hospice Care Service in Korea].

The urgent needs to establish hospice care systems in Korea arise from the following reasons: (1) a drastic increase in chronically ill patients with the increase of aged population: (2) rapid changes in living environment from the traditional habitation (e.g., Many Koreans living in apartment complexes, which is the most popular form of modern residence in recent years, prefer to die in the hospital.): the overall increase in patients with advanced cancer: (4) recent trends in early discharge of terminally ill patients from the limited hospital facilities to accommodate other medical insuranc
