Impact of different degrees of social engagement interventions (DDSEIs) on cognitive performance and brain activity in community-dwelling adults with subjective cognitive decline in Nanjing, China: a randomised controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Social isolation may have adverse effects on incidence and severity of cognitive impairment including subjective cognitive decline (SCD). An increase of environmental variety and social interactions may furthermore reduce progression from SCD to dementia. Research evaluating respective interventions is limited, particularly as regards studies comparing different degrees of social engagement interventions. We thus developed a clinical trial protocol to determine the efficacy of social interventions with different intensities in protecting cognitive function and white matter integr…

Effects of mini-basketball training program on social communication impairments and regional homogeneity of brain functions in preschool children with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social communication impairments (SCI) is a core symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and is marked by challenges in social interaction. Although physical exercise has been shown to improve SCI, this finding has not been supported by comprehensive scientific evidence. Existing research has established a strong link between the SCI in children with ASD and abnormalities in regional homogeneity (ReHo). Therefore, investigating the effects of physical exercise on SCI and Reho in patients with ASD may help to elucidate the neurological mechanisms involved. METHODS: The present st…

Problematic Internet Use and Mental Well-Being: The Importance Adolescents' Place on Digital Technology Interactions Moderates This Relationship.

PURPOSE: Problematic Internet use (PIU) affects around 10% of adolescents and contributes to lower well-being. However, using the Internet for social connection is associated with higher well-being. This study investigated whether the importance placed on using technology in specific ways, such as for social connection, might attenuate the association between PIU and mental well-being. METHODS: This national cross-sectional study examined whether adolescents' perceived importance of technology interactions moderated the association between PIU and mental well-being. Adolescents responded via

The Impact of Pragmatic Delays for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in Mainstream Classrooms.

Increasingly, across the globe, deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students are educated in mainstream schools using spoken language for communication. Classroom interactions require the use of sophisticated pragmatic language skills. Pragmatic skills can be delayed in DHH students and create challenges for the social and emotional adjustment of DHH students at school. School-aged DHH children may present to pediatric health care providers with concerns about communicating effectively and forming friendships with hearing school peers. This review of pragmatic research between school-aged DHH stude

[Giant panniculectomy].

Severe obesity is a growing health challenge, and some experience disabling functional problems despite major weight loss. In this case report, we present two male patients with giant pannus, resulting in limited mobility, recurrent infections, and social restrictions. Both underwent giant panniculectomy, removing 34.6 kg and 18.9 kg of tissue, respectively. Postoperative results included regaining the ability to walk without mobility aids, resuming physical activity, and increasing social interaction. Giant panniculectomy can provide substantial quality-of-life improvement in selected patient…

Transformation of social relationships in COVID-19 America: Remote communication may amplify political echo chambers.

The COVID-19 pandemic, with millions of Americans compelled to stay home and work remotely, presented an opportunity to explore the dynamics of social relationships in a predominantly remote world. Using the 1972-2022 General Social Surveys, we found that the pandemic significantly disrupted the patterns of social gatherings with family, friends, and neighbors but only momentarily. Drawing from the nationwide ego-network surveys of 41,033 Americans from 2020 to 2022, we found that the size and composition of core networks remained stable, although political homophily increased among nonkin rel

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Types and Social Media: Are Social Media Important and Impactful for OCD People?

Social media (SM) are the new standard for social interaction and people with OCD use such platforms like everyone else. However, the research on these individuals provides limited, sporadic, and difficult-to-generalize data outside of social-media evidence for one specific context concerning how SM is experienced by people with OCD. Our cross-sectional study involved 660 participants (71.4% females, 28.6% males) with 22% of the sample surpassing the 90° percentile threshold to be identified as high-level OCD-symptomatic individuals. Our work highlighted that roughly all OCD types are affected…

Sex Differences in the Neuromagnetic Cortical Response to Biological Motion.

Body motion is a rich source of information for social interaction, and visual biological motion processing may be considered as a hallmark of social cognition. It is unclear, however, whether the social brain is sex specific. Here we assess sex impact on the magnetoencephalographic (MEG) cortical response to point-light human locomotion. Sex differences in the cortical MEG response to biological motion occur mostly over the right brain hemisphere. At early latencies, females exhibit a greater activation than males over the right parietal, left temporal, and right temporal cortex, a core of th…

The moderating role of social networks in the relationship between alcohol consumption and treatment utilization for alcohol-related problems.

Many individuals wait until alcohol use becomes severe before treatment is sought. However, social networks, or the number of social groups an individual belongs to, may play a moderating role in this relationship. Logistic regression examined the interaction of alcohol consumption and social networks as a predictor of treatment utilization while adjusting for sociodemographic and clinical variables among 1,433 lifetime alcohol-dependent respondents from wave 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol Related Conditions (NESARC). Results showed that social networks moderate the relation

Effectiveness of cognitive behavioural group therapy for social phobia in a community clinic: a benchmarking study.

This study used a benchmarking strategy to investigate the transportability of cognitive behavioural group therapy (CBGT) for social phobia … e (CSC) on the Social Phobia Scale and the Beck Depression Inventory, but fewer achieved CSC on the Social Interaction and Anxiety Scale. Restricting the sample on the basis of depression symptoms, age above or below 50 years, comorbidity, alcohol problems, or student status did not significantly moderate effect sizes for social anxiety. It is concluded that CBGT is …

How am I going to tell you this? The relations between social anxiety and narrative coherence.

Recently, evidence has been increasing that individuals who are able to narrate coherently about their autobiographical memories, receive more positive social feedback, have higher-quality social relationships and are overall less likely to suffer from internalising psychopathology, like depression and anxiety. However, the relation between narrative coherence and social anxiety, in particular, has not been topic of research until now. This is remarkable, since the concern about negative evaluations by others in social situations is at the core of social anxiety. In the present experimental st

Social cognition and quality of life in Huntington's disease.

Individuals with Huntington's disease (HD) and their close others report difficulties with social interaction, and previous studies have shown that the areas of quality of life detrimentally impacted by HD include social and emotional domains. However, despite the finding that people with HD often exhibit difficulties on standard tests of social cognition, the relationship between such impairments and patients' everyday life has remained largely unexplored. We used a range of tasks assessing empathy, emotion recognition and Theory of Mind, to investigate whether patients' performance may predi…

Factors Associated with Healthy and Impaired Social Functioning in Young Adolescents with ADHD.

There is variability in the extent to which adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) exhibit social impairment, as the same diagnosis does not necessarily entail impairment in the same area(s) of functioning. The current study entailed a cross-sectional examination of enhancers to healthy social functioning and risk factors to parent- and self-rated social impairment in 324 middle school youth (ages 10-14 years) with ADHD. A series of binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate a risk-resilience model for social functioning, including testing compensa

Why smoking prevention programs sometimes fail. Does effectiveness depend on sociocultural context and individual characteristics?

BACKGROUND: School-based smoking prevention programs sometimes fail in unexpected ways. This study tests the hypotheses that both social/cultural contexts and individual dispositional characteristics may interact with program content to produce effects that are variable in potentially predictable ways. METHODS: Students in 24 culturally heterogeneous or primarily Hispanic/Latino middle schools (N = 3,157 6th graders) received a multicultural collectivist-framed social influences (SI) program, an individualist-framed SI program, or a control condition. Three-way linear and nonlinear interactio

The combined influence of athletic identity and social support networks on rehabilitation adherence during sports injury recovery: A longitudinal investigation utilizing real-time experience sampling methods.

This study examined the interactive effects of athletic identity and social support on rehabilitation adherence across recovery phases among injured athletes using experience sampling methodology (ESM). A total of 142 competitive athletes (18-35 years) with moderate‑to‑severe sports injuries requiring 8-12 weeks of rehabilitation were recruited. Athletic identity and perceived social support were measured by validated questionnaires, and adherence was assessed via clinic attendance, home exercise records and therapist ratings. ESM assessments were delivered three times daily over 12 weeks. Mix

How does psychiatric diagnosis affect young people's self-concept and social identity? A systematic review and synthesis of the qualitative literature.

Receiving a psychiatric diagnosis in childhood or adolescence can have numerous social, emotional and practical repercussions. Among the most important of these are the implications for a young person's self-concept and social identity. To ensure diagnoses are communicated and managed in a way that optimally benefits mental health trajectories, understanding young people's first-hand experience of living with a diagnosis is paramount. This systematic review collates, evaluates and synthesises the qualitative research that has explored how psychiatric diagnosis interacts with young people's sel
