Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), also known as dysmorphophobia, is a relatively common disorder that consists of preoccupation with some imagined or slight defect in physical appearance. The preoccupation causes emotional distress and social impairment. Overvalued ideation and referential thinking are prevalent. BDD has a rich tradition in European psychiatry, but it first entered the official psychiatric nomenclature as a separate disorder in DSM-III-R in 1987. In the last 10 years it has received increasing empirical attention. BDD has been hypothesized to be related to obsessive-compulsive d

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to examine the relationship between exposures to the dead and the development of somatic symptoms.
METHODS: We studied the pre-post responses of 352 military men and women who worked in the mortuary that received the dead from the Persian Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm) in 1990 to 1991. Symptoms of somatization were measured before and after exposure to the dead. The respondents were volunteers and nonvolunteers for assignment to the mortuary; some had prior experience in handling the dead and some did not. Four groups of participants were examine

Phobic disorders and other anxiety disorders belong to the most frequent psychiatric illnesses. Since they can be overlapped by other mental illnesses, they are often overlooked in practice. For example, comorbidity between anxiety and depression is very high. Also, personality disorders and a person's biography can lay the ground to anxiety. A typical complication of anxiety disorders is dependence of substances, predominantly of tranquilizers and alcohol. By means of a clinical case example, the topic of anxiety disorders is discussed practically and the treatment concept is detailed. Alread

In this study, 105 abused and nonabused women were examined for patterns of adult psychopathology associated with childhood sexual abuse and to test the extent to which these patterns are independent of other pathogenic properties of the family environment. Clinical and nonclinical Ss completed the Family Environment Scale, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), the Rorschach, and the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale. Greater nonspecific impairment among abused women may be a consequence, at least in part, of pathogenic family structure rather than sexual abuse per se. H

This article reviews diagnostic issues about body dysmorphic disorder and discusses its relationship to other disorders. Diagnostic and symptomatic overlap with obsessive-compulsive disorder is explored; associated features, course of illness, presumed etiology, and treatment outcome are compared; and similarities and differences are reviewed. Other illnesses with similar features, such as anorexia nervosa, social phobia, and the disorders associated with cosmetic surgery are mentioned. These findings are discussed in light of the development of DSM-IV diagnostic criteria.

Anxiety states sometimes lead to hyperventilation (HV) which may, in turn, give rise to a variety of physical symptoms. One way in which HV may present is with unilateral somatosensory symptoms, often left-sided. We report nine such cases. The mechanisms of lateralisation was examined using EEG and bilateral somatosensory evoked potentials which were carried out before and after HV. No difference in conduction velocity was found between affected and unaffected arms, but non-specific abnormalities were frequently noted in the EEGs. The results support the role of a central rather than a periphe

The purpose of the present epidemiological study is to investigate and describe panic disorder and sporadic panic attacks among a cohort of young adults, aged 28 years, from the Canton of Zurich in Switzerland. Both DSM-III panic disorder and sporadic panic are characterized by frequent symptoms of somatic anxiety and tension, as well as by frequent symptoms of depressed mood and low vitality. Sporadic panic is more prevalent than panic disorder and shows a greater excess of females over males. The association with depressions (major depression and recurrent brief depression) is similarly high

Forty-five mothers and 30 fathers, representing 58 families, completed the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised, a measure of current psychological and somatic symptoms, 24 months after the death of a child with cancer. The mean scores from six symptom dimensions (somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, and hostility) and a global measure of the depth of symptomatology, the Global Severity Index, were contrasted with those of the nonpatient and psychiatric outpatient norms reported by Derogatis (1983). Two years after the child's death parents showed a sympt

Loin pain hematuria syndrome is a rare disease with a prevalence of ∼0.012%. The most prominent clinical features include periods of severe intermittent or persistent unilateral or bilateral loin pain accompanied by either microscopic or gross hematuria. Patients with loin pain hematuria syndrome initially present with hematuria, flank pain, or most often both hematuria and flank pain. Kidney biopsies from patients with loin pain hematuria typically reveal only minor pathologic abnormalities. Further, loin pain hematuria syndrome is not associated with loss of kidney function or urinary tract

BACKGROUND: Cholecystectomy is a surgical gold-standard procedure for gallbladder diseases, among which gallstones are the most frequent. Despite the introduction of minimally invasive surgery and broad access to ultrasound examination there is a group of patients in whom the surgery ailments persist. Those vague ailments can be perceived from a psychological point of view as somatization or even somatoform disorders.
METHODS: The aim of the study, designed as a case-control study, was to evaluate psychological characteristics that may accompany the incidence of so-called post-cholecystectomy…

This study aimed to link interpersonal goals with interpersonal problems and psychological distress and to investigate changes in these variables during an inpatient psychotherapeutic treatment. Two hundred and fifty-eight patients treated in a psychosomatic hospital completed the German versions of the circumplex scales of interpersonal values, the inventory of interpersonal problems, and the outcome questionnaire before and at the end of their treatment. Patients initially reported a strong need for bonding in the CSIV. Especially interpersonal goals related to avoidant, submissive, and altr

The diagnosis of neurovegetative dystonia (NVD) is commonly made by general physicians in Brazil, but its precise meaning is unclear. Anecdotal evidence suggests that it is used to describe patients with a wide range of psychological and physical symptoms and is often used pejoratively, in a similar way to "crocks" in the USA. Forty patients who had been diagnosed as having NVD by general physicians working in a triage department of a general public hospital were compared with 40 non-NVD patients, matched for age and gender, from the same department. Patients were evaluated by a psychiatrist w

A standardised test of psychopathology (CCEI) was administered to tinnitus sufferers some of whom also complained of dizziness. It was predicted that the complaint of dizziness would be associated with higher scores on the anxiety scales of the CCEI and this was confirmed. Subjects complaining of dizziness obtained much higher scores on 'phobic' and 'somatic' anxiety scales in particular. However, the complaint of dizziness was completely uncorrelated with objective assessments of balance and there was no effect of balance, objectively assessed, in moderating the association between the compla

Functional heartburn (FH) is typically diagnosed by 24-hour multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH (MII-pH) monitoring; however, relying solely on 24-hour MII-pH may miss gastroesophageal reflux events due to day-to-day variability. In addition, since FH is a diagnosis of exclusion, other underlying conditions may be undiagnosed. This study aimed to assess the clinical course of FH and identify potential alternative diagnoses. Patients with heartburn refractory to proton pump inhibitors or potassium-competitive acid blockers who underwent endoscopy, high-resolution manometry, and MII-pH monito

BACKGROUND: As individuals with thalidomide embryopathy now reaching their 60's they undergo long-term sequelae of their prenatal damage and experience a wide range of secondary health problems, in particular chronic musculoskeletal pain, movement restrictions, and mental disorders. These health problems are having a negative impact on their life circumstances and their health-related quality of life (HRQOL).
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the HRQOL in individuals with thalidomide embryopathy in comparison to individuals of the age-adjusted general population in Germany wit

INTRODUCTION: Headaches are a common reason for visiting neurology clinics. They have their origin in a variety of causes and their specific diagnosis deteriorates as it overlaps with other chronic painful pathologies. Somatic functional syndromes are characterised by chronic painful conditions that have a negative effect on quality of life, and are accompanied by functional symptoms with no organic cause.
AIMS: The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of functional symptoms in patients who visited due to headaches.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The sample included all the patients who vi
