Pressure injuries (PIs) originate beneath the surface of the skin at the interface between bone and soft tissue. We used diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) and diffuse near-infrared spectroscopy (DNIRS) to predict the development of PIs by measuring dermal and subcutaneous red cell motion and optical absorption and scattering properties in 11 spinal cord injury subjects with only nonbleachable redness in the sacrococcygeal area in a rehabilitation hospital and 20 healthy volunteers. A custom optical probe was developed to obtain continuous DCS and DNIRS data from sacrococcygeal tissue whil

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) allows continuous noninvasive monitoring of in vivo oxygenation in selected tissues. It has been used primarily as a research tool for several years, but it is seeing wider application in the clinical arena all over the world. It was recently used to monitor brain circulation in cardiac surgery, carotid endarteriectomy, neurosurgery and robotic surgery. According to the few studies used NIRS in pregnancy, it may be helpful to assess the impact of severe forms of preeclampsia on brain circulation, to evaluate the efficacy of different treatments. It may also be

Humans are born with the ability to mentally represent the approximate numerosity of a set of objects, but little is known about the brain systems that sub-serve this ability early in life and their relation to the brain systems underlying symbolic number and mathematics later in development. Here we investigate processing of numerical magnitudes before the acquisition of a symbolic numerical system or even spoken language, by measuring the brain response to numerosity changes in pre-verbal infants using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). To do this, we presented infants with two t

With the introduction of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) into the experimental setting, developmental scientists have, for the first time, the capacity to investigate the functional activation of the infant brain in awake, engaged participants. The advantages of fNIRS clearly outweigh the limitations, and a description of how this technology is implemented in infant populations is provided. Most fNIRS research falls into one of three content domains: object processing, processing of biologically and socially relevant information, and language development. Within these domains, th

Previous studies demonstrated the presence of Monochromatic Ultra-Slow Oscillations (MUSO) in human EEG. In the present study we explored the biological origin of MUSO by simultaneous recordings of EEG, Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS), arterial blood pressure, respiration and Laser Doppler flowmetry. We used a head-up tilt test in order to check whether MUSO might relate to Mayer waves in arterial blood pressure, known to be enhanced by the tilting procedure. MUSO were detected in 8 out of 10 subjects during rest and showed a striking monochromatic spectrum (0.07-0.14 Hz). The spatial topogr

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were extracted from four anaerobic granular sludges with different procedures to study their involvement in biosorption of metallic elements. EPS extracts are composed of closely associated organic and mineral fractions. The EPS macromolecules (proteins, polysaccharides, humic-like substances, nucleic, and uronic acids) have functional groups potentially available for the binding of metallic elements. The acidic constants of these ionizable groups are: pKa1 (4-5) corresponding to the carboxyl groups; pKa2 (6-7) corresponding to the phosphoric groups; pK

A 785nm diode laser and probe with a 6mm spot size were used to obtain spectra of stationary powders and powders mixing at 50rpm in a high shear convective blender. Two methods of assessing the effect of particle characteristics on the Raman sampling depth for microcrystalline cellulose (Avicel), aspirin or sodium nitrate were compared: (i) the information depth, based on the diminishing Raman signal of TiO(2) in a reference plate as the depth of powder prior to the plate was increased, and (ii) the depth at which a sample became infinitely thick, based on the depth of powder at which the Rama

OBJECTIVE: The early detection and stratification of potential hypoxic ischaemia (HI) injury in neonates are crucial for reducing the risk of neural disability. This study investigates early changes in brain function caused by acute HI of varying severities in the neonatal pig.
METHODS: Two non-invasive techniques, amplitude-integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), were used to monitor electrocortical and cerebral haemodynamic function, respectively. The fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO(2)) was varied to produce different HI severities. The sensitivity and

INTRODUCTION: The purposes of this study are to compare two hypoxic/ischemic (H/I) insults using amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG), alone or combined with cerebral blood volume (CBV), as a guide to control hypoxia and to determine which protocol most effectively produces a consistent degree of survivable neuropathological damage in a newborn piglet model of perinatal asphyxia.
METHODS: Eighteen piglets were subjected to H/I insult of 20-min low aEEG (LAEEG). After the 20-min, the aEEG group was maintained with low mean arterial blood pressure for 10min. The procedure for the aEEG plus CBV group

Noninvasive near infrared spectroscopy measurements were performed to monitor cyanide (CN) poisoning and recovery in the brain region and in foreleg muscle simultaneously, and the effects of a novel CN antidote, sulfanegen sodium, on tissue hemoglobin oxygenation changes were compared using a sub-lethal rabbit model. The results demonstrated that the brain region is more susceptible to CN poisoning and slower in endogenous CN detoxification following exposure than peripheral muscles. However, sulfanegen sodium rapidly reversed CN toxicity, with brain region effects reversing more quickly than

Previous studies of cognitive, mental and/or motor processes during short-, medium- and long-term weightlessness have only been descriptive in nature, and focused on psychological aspects. Until now, objective observation of neurophysiological parameters has not been carried out--undoubtedly because the technical and methodological means have not been available--, investigations into the neurophysiological effects of weightlessness are in their infancy (Schneider et al. 2008). While imaging techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) would be hard

The important roles of biothiols in biological systems have attracted great interest in the determination of biothiols. Although great progress has been made in fluorescent biothiol probes, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probes for biothiols are rather few even such NIR probes can avoid interference from biological media such as tissue autofluorescence and scattering light, and thereby facilitate relatively interference-free sensing. Herein, we report photoactivated CdTe/CdSe quantum dots (QDs) as a novel NIR fluorescent probe for biothiols. The photoactivated CdTe/CdSe QDs based NIR fluoresc

Continuous EEG monitoring with amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) has become a part of the routine neurological care in the neonatal unit, especially in full-term infants with hypoxia-ischemia and in infants suspected of seizures. Its prognostic value after birth asphyxia is well established and seizure detection has improved with the new digital aEEG devices with access to the "real" EEG, and even with seizure detection in some devices. Recent experience shows that aEEG monitoring also appears to be very helpful in premature infants. One has to be aware of possible artefacts,

Over the past 30 years researchers have learned a great deal about the development of object processing in infancy. In contrast, little is understood about the neural mechanisms that underlie this capacity, in large part because there are few techniques available to measure brain functioning in human infants. The present research examined the extent to which near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), an optical imaging technique, could be used to assess the relation between object processing and brain functioning. Infants aged 6.5 months were presented with an occlusion event involving objects that di

There is preliminary evidence that therapeutic massage is a useful modality for the relief of a variety of symptoms and symptom-related distress affecting cancer patients. Mechanistic studies are necessary to delineate underlying biologic and psychological effects of massage and their relationship to outcomes. The current article discusses a model for using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques to capture dynamic in vivo responses to biomechanical changes induced in the soft tissues by massage. This model enables study of the communication of soft tissue changes to activity in the subcortical

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture stimulation and phototherapy have been reported to have analgesic effects and improve the microcirculation. However, few studies have directly examined changes in peripheral blood vessels, either quantitatively or objectively. We assessed the responses of arteriolar blood flow to acupuncture stimulation and phototherapy under direct vision to examine the effects of these treatments.
METHODS: We used 40 rabbits with a rabbit ear chamber attached to the auricle. The rabbit ear chamber was fixed to the auricle under a dissecting microscope. Arterioles were selected and ob

Lung cancer patients with malignant pleural effusions (MPE) have a particular poor prognosis. It is crucial to distinguish MPE from benign pleural effusion (BPE). The present study aims to develop a rapid, convenient and economical diagnostic method based on FTIR near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) combined with machine learning strategy for clinical pleural effusion classification. NIRS spectra were recorded for 47 MPE samples and 35 BPE samples. The sample data were randomly divided into train set (n = 62) and test set (n = 20). Partial least squares, random forest, support vector machine (SVM

Histopathology is the gold standard for diagnosing fibrosis, but its routine use is constrained by the need for additional stains, time, personnel and resources. Vibrational spectroscopy is a novel technique that offers an alternative atraumatic approach, with short scan times, while providing metabolic and morphological data. This review evaluates vibrational spectroscopy for the assessment of fibrosis, with a focus on point-of-care capabilities. OVID Medline, Embase and Cochrane databases were systematically searched using PRISMA guidelines for search terms including vibrational spectroscopy
