Ross syndrome: a rare or a misknown disorder of thermoregulation? A skin innervation study on 12 subjects.

Ross syndrome is described as a rare disorder of sweating associated with areflexia and tonic pupil. Since Ross's first description in 1958, approximately 40 cases have been described. We assessed the involvement of cutaneous innervation in 12 subjects with Ross syndrome using quantitative sensory testing, sweating assessment and immunohistochemical study of anhidrotic and hyperhidrotic skin. This evaluation was repeated over time in 4 out of 12 subjects. In addition, we enrolled four subjects with Holmes-Adie syndrome (areflexia and tonic pupil) to investigate similarities between the two con…

Comparison of 10 versus 20 sessions tap water iontophoresis efficacy in the treatment of palmoplantar hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Tap water iontophoresis (TWI) is an effective treatment option for palmoplantar hyperhidrosis (HH). However, the optimal number and frequency of TWI sessions to control profuse sweating are unclear. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of 10 and 20 sessions of TWI in patients with palmoplantar HH and determine the adequate number of sessions to achieve a favorable clinical response. METHODS: Eighty patients treated with TWI for palmoplantar HH were included. The alteration in sweating intensity considering the mean value of gravimetric measurement and mean visual analog scale (VAS)…

Reduced activity, reactivity and functionality of the sympathetic nervous system in fibromyalgia: An electrodermal study.

Alterations in autonomic activity are well established in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Previous studies found reduced parasympathetic activity and sympathetic reactivity to physical and stress manipulations. However, sympathetic activity at rest has not been well studied in FMS. Sweating is exclusively controlled by sympathetic mechanisms. In this study, skin conductance (SC), as an indirect measure of sweating, was analyzed in 45 women with FMS and 38 healthy women. Tonic SC levels were recorded during a 4-minute rest period, and a breathing maneuver consisting of deep breathing with posterio…

Reappraisal of tubulopapillary hidradenoma-like tumor of the mandible: Suggested change in nomenclature to reflect tumor origin.

Several cases of intraosseous mandibular tumors have been reported under the name "tubulopapillary hidradenoma-like tumor of the mandible (TPHLTM)." However, the intraosseous occurrence of sweat gland tumors needs to be reappraised. The aim of this review was to propose a new name for these tumors to reflect the possible tumor origin. In view of the incidence and the tissue of origin, TPHLTM is more likely to be a salivary gland tumor than a sweat gland tumor. Among salivary gland tumors, a recently described salivary neoplasm called "sialadenoma papilliferum-like intraductal papillary tumor (…

Lipoid proteinosis: A case with distinct histopathological and radiological findings.

Lipoid proteinosis is a rare inherited genodermatosis characterized by hyaline deposits in various tissues. Clinically, it manifests with cutaneous as well as extracutaneous features. Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-reactive hyaline deposits in the upper dermis, with localization around blood vessels and eccrine sweat glands, in particular, is the histopathological hallmark finding. On brain imaging, bilateral symmetrical temporal lobe calcifications are considered to be pathognomonic of this disorder. We report a case of lipoid proteinosis in which hyaline deposits were present in the papillary an…

We report a 42-year-old man w … t also restarted the ability of the patient to thermoregulate by perspiration. The normalization of sweat-gland function was confirmed by gravimetrically measuring sweat rates before and after retinoid treatment. This report shows that retinoid therapy can markedly improve the quality of life in patients with generalized lamellar ichthyosis by reconstit …

Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis.

Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis is an autosomal-recessive disorder resulting from defective neural crest differentiation with loss of the first-order afferent system, which is responsible for pain and temperature sensation. There is also a neuronal loss in the sympathetic ganglia. Lack of sweating, hyperthermia, and infections of bones are main features of the disorder; however, contradictory results have been published regarding eccrine sweat gland innervation. A 5-year-old male patient with typical clinical manifestations of congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis i…

Specific [125I]Bolton-Hunter substance P binding sites in human and rat skin.

[125I]Bolton-Hunter substance P [( 125I]BH-SP) binding sites in rat and human skin were investigated, using quantitative receptor autoradiographic and emulsion autoradiographic methods. [125I]BH-SP binding sites were discretely localized in skin areas anatomically corresponding to dermal papillae, sweat glands, and hair follicles. The highest density of the binding sites was in the dermal papilla of the finger, followed by the sweat gland. [125I]BH-SP binding to the dermal papillae of the human finger pad skin and rat paw pad skin was displaced by unlabeled SP, with a high affinity, and Kd val…

Health risk of fluorine in soil from a phosphorus industrial area based on the in-vitro oral, inhalation, and dermal bioaccessibility.

Health risk of F in soil is of special concern due to the continuously elevated concentration of F in soil. However, there is still a dearth … detoxic potential for the absorbed F after digesting in small intestine, while effects of enzymes, sweat, and food on the oral bioaccessibility of F were insignificant. Different with metals, the major dissolving phase of F was the interstitial fluid in the deep lung instead of in the alveolar macrophages intracellular environment. A potentially major …

Potential Mechanisms of the Sparing of Atopic Dermatitis in the Diaper Region: A Scoping Review.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition commonly affecting infants with notable sparing of the diaper region. Though sources anecdotally attribute this sparing to the physical barrier formed by the diaper and the subsequent retention of moisture, urine, sweat and feces, no studies have formally investigated the factors contributing to this sparing phenomenon. We performed a scoping literature review to investigate the factors involved in sparing of AD in the diaper region, namely humidity, scratching, urine, sweat, feces, and microbiome composition. A total of 130 pape…

Electrically induced quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test in human volunteers.

Chemically-induced quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test (QSART) and quantitative sensory testing (QST) are established clinical tools to assess thin fiber function in humans. We investigated stimulus-response functions to transcutaneous electrical stimuli of different current intensity (3.75 to 10mA) and pulse frequency (5 to 100Hz) comparing sweat output (ml/h/m(2)) and pain intensity (numeric rating scale [NRS], 0-10). Efferent sudomotor and afferent nociceptive responses were recorded after a 30s electrical stimulation period of distal (hand and foot) and proximal (forearm and thorax) bo…

Malnutrition causes a reduction in alveolar epithelial sodium and chloride transport which predisposes to death from lung injury.

BACKGROUND: All forms of malnutrition have been associated with increased severity of pneumonia, an increased pneumonia associated mortality and an increased risk of pulmonary fluid overload. Malnutrition was found to be associated with increased sweat sodium and chloride concentrations. A reduction of systemic sodium and chloride transport reflected in sweat sodium and chloride levels has been linked to increased severity of pulmonary edema in children with septicemia. HYPOTHESIS: Malnutrition causes a reduction in alveolar epithelial sodium and chloride transport which predisposes to death …

Retrocaval Ureter Manifested after Ureteral Reimplantation for Ipsilateral Vesicoureteral Reflux: A Case Report.

Hyperhidrosis is a common and distressing condition involving increased production of sweat. A variety of treatment modalities are used to try to control or reduce sweating. Sweat is secreted by eccrine glands innervated by cholinergic fibers from the sympathetic nervous system. Primary hyperhidrosis most commonly affects palms, axillae and soles. Secondary hyperhidrosis is caused by an underlying condition, and treatment involves the removal or control of this condition. The treatment options for primary hyperhidrosis involve a range of topical or systemic medications, psychotherapy and surgi…
