BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is one of the most common signs of Neurocysticercosis (NCC). In this study, spatial and temporal variations in the incidence of hospitalized cases (IHC) of epilepsy and NCC in Ecuadorian municipalities were analyzed. Additionally, potential socio-economic and landscape indicators were evaluated in order to understand in part the macro-epidemiology of the Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis complex.
METHODOLOGY: Data on the number of hospitalized epilepsy and NCC cases by municipality of residence were obtained from morbidity-hospital systems in Ecuador. SatScan software…

BACKGROUND: The zoonotic cestodes such as Taenia and Echinococcus species belonging to family taeniidae are of paramount importance in the developing world since they pose serious public health impacts. Dogs serve as definitive hosts, shedding eggs into the environment that can infect livestock and humans.
AIM: To determine the occurrence of Taeniid infections in dogs, assess the risk factors and evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of dog owners.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2025 to February 2026 in Bahir Dar and Gondar cities, Ethiopia. A

Combined community health programs aiming at health education, preventive anti-parasitic chemotherapy, and vaccination of pigs have proven their potential to regionally reduce and even eliminate Taenia solium infections that are associated with a high risk of neurological disease through ingestion of T. solium eggs. Yet it remains challenging to target T. solium endemic regions precisely or to make exact diagnoses in individual patients. One major reason is that the widely available stool microscopy may identify Taenia ssp. eggs in stool samples as such, but fails to distinguish between invasi

AIMS: Industrial growth has increased the exposure to endocrine disruptor compounds (EDCs) in all organisms. Bisphenol A (BPA), an EDC, has been demonstrated to be involved in the susceptibility to parasite infections. However, few studies have analysed this connection in more depth. The aim of this study was to determine whether early BPA exposure in female mice affects the systemic immune response and the susceptibility to Taenia crassiceps infection.
METHODS AND RESULTS: BALB/c mice were exposed to BPA at post-natal day 3. At 6 weeks of age, they were inoculated with T crassiceps larvae an

Specific antibody responses were assessed in pigs immunized with the Taenia solium vaccine TSOL18. Anti-TSOL18 responses were compared 2 weeks after secondary immunization, where the interval between primary and secondary immunization was 4, 8, 12, 16 or 20 weeks. All animals responded to the vaccine and there was no diminution in antibody responses in animals receiving their second injection after an interval up to 20 weeks. Pigs receiving vaccinations at an interval of 12 weeks developed significantly increased antibody responses compared with animals receiving immunizations 4 weeks apart (P

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Intestinal parasites are widely prevalent in developing countries, probably due to poor sanitation and inadequate personal hygiene. It is estimated that as much as 60% of the world's population is infected with intestinal parasites, which may play a significant role in morbidity due to intestinal infections. This study was designed to estimate the prevalence of helminthic infections among school children in Puducherry, South India.
METHODS: The prevalence of helminthic infections was studied in 1,172 children in public schools in Puducherry (Pondicherry), South India, betw

Although the presence of intact host proteins in the cyst fluid of cyclophyllidean metacestodes has been well documented, the underlying reason for protein uptake is poorly understood. To investigate this discrepancy, both the cyst fluid (CF) and excreted/secreted (E/S) proteins were collected in vitro from Taenia crassiceps metacestodes 16 wk postinfection in Balb/cJ female mice. The CF and E/S were subsequently immunoblotted using rabbit anti-mouse whole serum antibodies as a probe. The results show that whole host proteins were not only internalized by metacestodes but also secreted as well

Responses to Taenia taeniaeformis infection were studied in mice with severe combined immunodeficiency (scid), which lack functional T and B lymphocytes. In the early phase of infection, accumulation of polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PML) occurred around the larvae in the liver of scid mice and their immunocompetent counterparts, C.B-17, (a BALB/c strain, genetically resistant to this parasite). PML accumulation continued until encapsulation of developing larvae by fibroblasts (14 days p.i.), and subsequent fibrosis resulted in granuloma formation. No infiltration of eosinophils or macrophages

Staining properties, kinetics and degranulation of the hepatic mast cells (HMC) accumulating around the metacestodes of Taenia taeniaeformis in the liver of rats were studied. Two different types of HMC, designated as Type I and Type II, could be classified according to histochemical properties and response to compound 48/80. Type I cells resembled mucosal mast cells (MMC), whereas Type II did not. HMC, mostly Type I, were observed from day 14 postinfection (PI), while Type II were seen only from day 28 PI. On day 28 PI, Type II represented a transitional staining pattern between MMC and conne

Twenty-four specific-pathogen-free Beagles were each given 50 cysticerci of Taenia pisiformis that had been harvested from experimentally infected rabbits. Quantitative fecal egg counts and fecal screening for recovery of passed segments were performed on postinoculation days 56 through 70. Twenty-three of 24 dogs fed cysticerci developed patent infections. The 23 dogs with patent infections were assigned to 1 of 2 groups and treated with nitroscanate or a placebo 60 days after inoculation. Egg counts in the treated dogs had markedly decreased by the second day after treatment, and by the sixt

A sandwich-ELISA was developed for the detection of soluble Taenia hydatigena antigens in fecal samples of dogs. Affinity-purified polyclonal catching antibodies and alkaline phosphatase-conjugated detecting antibodies were employed, which had been obtained from rabbits hyperimmunized with excretory/secretory antigens derived from in vitro maintained adult Taenia hydatigena. The assay allowed the detection of 800 ng T. hydatigena antigen g-1 of feces as a lower limit. Six helminth-free dogs were each infected with 10 T. hydatigena cysticerci isolated from Swiss sheep. After prepatent periods r

Helminthic parasites cause chronic infections due to their ability to generate immune regulatory networks in their hosts; however, an additional component in this interplay is the microbiota. In this regard, new insights have emerged from intestinal helminthic infections, but whether extraintestinal worms are able to alter intestinal microbiota is unknown. Here, we explored microbiota changes occurring during experimental infection with the peritoneal, non-migrating cestode Taenia crassiceps. Our sequencing approach allowed for the identification of 56 families and 119 genera in the fecal samp

Cysticercus is the infective larval form of the cystode T. solium that causes cysticercosis. It is has been declared as one of the neglected endemic zoonoses by the WHO. Poor sanitation, and consumption of undercooked infected pork and raw vegetables contaminated by human feces are the potential sources. Cysticercosis can affect various organs. India is one of the endemic countries where the parasite is prevalent in many states. This study aimed to analyze and report cases of cysticercosis based on the histopathological diagnosis. This is a retrospective study that included cases which had bee

BACKGROUND: The cestode Taenia solium causes the neglected (zoonotic) tropical disease cysticercosis, a leading cause of preventable epilepsy in endemic low and middle-income countries. Transmission models can inform current scaling-up of control efforts by helping to identify, validate and optimise control and elimination strategies as proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO).
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A systematic literature search was conducted using the PRISMA approach to identify and compare existing T. solium transmission models, and related Taeniidae infection transmission

A 17-year-old male patient presented with cellulitis and mass in the eye noticed approximately 3 months back. The mass was about 1 cm in size and situated at the limbus. All preoperative routine investigations were normal. Surgical exploration revealed a sub-conjunctival cystic mass near the lateral rectus muscle about 1 cm in diameter; the mass was excised. Gross pathological examination revealed a thin-walled cystic mass. There was a hard nodule in the center. Microscopy revealed a wall of cysticercosis. Scolex was also seen. Surrounding tissue revealed sparse acute and chronic inflammatory

BACKGROUND: Taenia saginata cysticercus is the larval stage of the zoonotic parasite Taenia saginata, with a life-cycle involving both cattle and humans. The public health impact is considered low. The current surveillance system, based on post-mortem inspection of carcasses has low sensitivity and leads to considerable economic burden. Therefore, in the interests of public health and food production efficiency, this study aims to explore the potential of risk-based and cost-effective meat inspection activities for the detection and control of T. saginata cysticercus in low prevalence settings
