Spectral signatures of mirror movements in the sensori-motor connectivity in kallmann syndrome.

Mirror movements (MM) might be observed in congenital and acquired neurodegenerative conditions but their anatomic-functional underpinnings are still largely elusive. This study investigated the spectral changes of resting-state functional connectivity in Kallmann Syndrome (hypogonadotropic hypogonadism with hypo/anosmia with or without congenital MM) searching for insights into the phenomenon of MM. Forty-four Kallmann syndrome patients (21 with MM) and 24 healthy control subjects underwent task (finger tapping) and resting-state functional MRI. The spatial pattern of task-related activations

Modeling in Real Time During the Ebola Response.

To aid decision-making during CDC's response to the 2014-2016 Ebola virus disease (Ebola) epidemic in West Africa, CDC activated a Modeling Task Force to generate estimates on various topics related to the response in West Africa and the risk for importation of cases into the United States. Analysis of eight Ebola response modeling projects conducted during August 2014-July 2015 provided insight into the types of questions addressed by modeling, the impact of the estimates generated, and the difficulties encountered during the modeling. This time frame was selected to cover the three phases of

Endogenous Opioid Signaling in the Medial Prefrontal Cortex is Required for the Expression of Hunger-Induced Impulsive Action.

Opioid transmission and dysregulated prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity have both been implicated in the inhibitory-control deficits associated with addiction and binge-type eating disorders. What remains unknown, however, is whether endogenous opioid transmission within the PFC modulates inhibitory control. Here, we compared intra-PFC opioid manipulations with a monoamine manipulation (d-amphetamine), in two sucrose-reinforced tasks: progressive ratio (PR), which assays the motivational value of an incentive, and differential reinforcement of low response rates (DRLs), a test of inhibitory cont

COVID-19 Vaccine Framing and Acceptance Among Adults Who Are Vaccine Hesitant.

IMPORTANCE: Autonomy concerns represent one of many contributors to vaccine hesitancy, yet public health messaging often emphasizes government compliance. It is important to study whether alternative message framing is associated with stated vaccine acceptance among hesitant individuals. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether framing vaccines as freedom enhancing is associated with higher vaccine acceptance among vaccine hesitant adults. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional online discrete choice experiment was conducted from May 1 to 4, 2024. Each respondent completed 12 choice t

Conversational AI increases political knowledge as effectively as self-directed internet search.

Conversational AI systems are increasingly being used in place of traditional search engines to help users complete information-seeking tasks. This has raised concerns in the political domain, where biased or hallucinated outputs could misinform voters or distort public opinion. However, in spite of these concerns, the extent to which conversational AI is used for political information-seeking, as well as the potential impact of this use on users' political knowledge, remains uncertain. Here, we address these questions: First, in a representative national survey of the UK public (n = 2,499), w

The potential of event-related beta oscillations as biomarkers for neuromodulatory treatment efficacy.

Electroencephalography (EEG) recently celebrated its 100-year anniversary, having revolutionized the study of cognitive function across species. Over the past century, neuroelectric measures such as resting-state EEG, event-related potentials (ERP), and event-related oscillations (ERO) have become indispensable not only for advancing our understanding of brain function but also for identifying valuable biomarkers for diagnosing neurological and psychiatric disorders and evaluating the efficacy of novel therapies. Compared to resting state activity and ERPs, EROs-oscillatory dynamics time-locke

Beyond expectations: nocebo suggestion affects cognitive performance in older adults.

Placebo and nocebo effects are well-documented in pain perception and motor performance, yet their impact on cognitive performance remains unclear. Understanding these effects is relevant for designing interventions that leverage positive expectations to enhance cognitive outcomes while mitigating negative expectations, especially for older adults facing age-related cognitive decline. Furthermore, it is unclear whether these effects can be induced remotely, in the absence of direct participant-experimenter interactions. This study examined whether verbal suggestions about an intervention poten

The Leiden Stroop-like Stress Task: A tool to reveal physiological dynamics using graded stress induction.

Stress evokes a complex repertoire of psychological and physiological responses. This paper introduces the Leiden Stroop-like Stress Task (LSST), a paradigm designed to induce progressively increasing levels of stress by manipulating task difficulty and social-evaluative threat across four 10-minute blocks. Fifty-four healthy adults (35 females; mean age = 21 ± 3 years) completed the LSST, with repeated assessments of self-reported stress and challenge-threat appraisal, as well as continuous cardiovascular recordings. Results confirmed the LSST's effectiveness in eliciting gradual increases in

U2AD: Uncertainty-based unsupervised anomaly detection framework for detecting T2 hyperintensity in MRI spinal cord.

T2 hyperintensities in spinal cord MR images are crucial biomarkers for conditions such as degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM). However, current clinical diagnoses primarily rely on manual evaluation. Deep learning methods have shown promise in lesion detection, but most supervised approaches are heavily dependent on large, annotated datasets. Unsupervised anomaly detection (UAD) offers a compelling alternative by eliminating the need for abnormal data annotations. However, existing UAD methods face challenges of domain shifts and task conflict. We propose an Uncertainty-based Unsupervised

Embodiment of Occupational Exoskeletons as Developing a Sense of Ownership and Readiness-To-Hand: Laboratory and Field Explorations.

ObjectiveThis study empirically investigates the embodiment of occupational exoskeletons (OEs) through repeated use.BackgroundOEs are wearable devices designed to assist operators' movements. Their embodiment- the phenomenon by which they come to be perceived as an integral part of oneself - remains underexplored, thus limiting our understanding of OE adoption. We operationalize embodiment through readiness-to-hand (using the device with minimal conscious attention) and sense of ownership (perceiving the device as part of oneself).MethodStudy 1 is a laboratory study using a within-subject desi

Electrophysiological correlates of visual short-term memory binding deficits in community-dwelling seniors at risk of dementia.

BACKGROUND: Visual Short-Term Memory Binding (VSTMB) is a preclinical marker of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Reduced early event-related potentials (ERPs) (100-250 ms) over fronto-central (FC) and parieto-occipital (PO) regions have been reported in patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) seen in the clinic. We investigated such ERPs in a larger sample of community-dwelling older adults who had not sought medical advice. METHODS: Participants (n = 215) were assessed with a neuropsychological battery and the VSTMB Task. The latter assessed the ability to detect changes between two consecuti

On the interaction between implicit statistical learning and the alternation advantage: Evidence from manual and oculomotor serial reaction time tasks.

In this study, we examine how implicit statistical learning (ISL) interacts with the cognitive bias of the alternation advantage in serial reaction time (SRT) tasks. Our aim was to disentangle perceptual from motor aspects of learning, as well as to shed light on the cognitive sources of this alternation effect. We developed a manual (Study 1) and an oculomotor (Study 2) two-choice SRT task, with visual stimuli following the regularities of two binary artificial grammars (Fibonacci and its modification Skip). While these grammars share some deterministic transitional regularities, they differ

Electrophysiological underpinnings of dysfunctional inhibitory control in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: evidence for reduced NoGo anteriorization.

Our aim was to delineate the electrophysiological basis of dysfunctional inhibitory control of adult ADHD via investigating the anteriorization of the P3 component of the event-related brain response associated with the NoGo task condition (i.e., NoGo anteriorization, NGA). NGA is a neurophysiological measure of brain topography for cognitive response control, which indexes an overall shift of the brain's electrical activity in anterior direction towards the prefrontal areas. While the NoGo P3 received considerable attention in the adult ADHD literature, the brain topography of this component,

Age Cutoff for Early-Onset Parkinson's Disease: Recommendations from the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society Task Force on Early Onset Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD)/young-onset Parkinson's disease (YOPD) is defined as Parkinson's disease (PD) with an age at onset (AAO) after age 21 years but before the usual AAO for PD. Consensus is lacking, and the reported maximal age for EOPD/YOPD has varied from 40 to 60 years, leading to a lack of uniformity in published studies and difficulty in harmonization of data. EOPD and YOPD have both been used in the literature, somewhat interchangeably. OBJECTIVE: To define the nomenclature and AAO cutoff for EOPD/YOPD. METHODS: An extensive review of the literature and t

A Causal Role of the Cerebellum in Auditory Feedback Control of Vocal Production.

Accumulating evidence demonstrates that the cerebellum is involved in a variety of cognitive functions. Recently, impaired auditory-motor integration for vocal control has been identified in patients with cerebellar degeneration, characterized by abnormally enhanced vocal compensations for pitch perturbations. However, the causal relationship between the cerebellum and auditory feedback during vocal production remains unclear. By applying anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) over right cerebellum, the present study investigated cerebellar contributions to auditory-motor proc

Eye movement performance and clinical outcomes among female athletes post-concussion.

BACKGROUND: Most post-concussion eye movement (EM) research involves predominantly male samples. We evaluated pro- (PRO; reflexive shift of visual attention to target) and anti- (ANTI; executive control of visual attention away from target) computer-based saccade task performance among female, collegiate athletes with recent concussion (CON) versus healthy-control athletes (HC). We evaluated the relationship between EM performance and post-concussion outcomes. We hypothesized ANTI performance would differ among CON and HC due to greater executive control demands, and that EM performance (both

Examining the interplay of micro-break durations and activities for employee recovery: A mixed-methods investigation.

On a given workday, employees spend time at work doing tasks that are not work-related, potentially using these micro-breaks (i.e., short breaks that are less than 10 min) to attempt to recover depleted psychological resources such as energy and attention. However, most work break and recovery research has focused on how individuals recover from work during formal nonwork time with longer or unspecified time durations (e.g., lunch breaks, evenings, vacations), limiting theoretical and empirical understanding of whether employees can experience recovery within the workday via brief micro-breaks

Cocaine conditioning induces persisting changes in ventral hippocampus synaptic transmission, long-term potentiation, and radial arm maze performance in the mouse.

The effects of drugs of abuse, such as cocaine, on learning and memory processes are thought to contribute to drug craving and relapse susceptibility. Using an Escalating (Esc) or Double Escalating (2x Esc) cocaine i.p. dosing schedule with the conditioned place preference (CPP) model we investigated the persisting effects of cocaine conditioning on long-term potentiation (LTP) in the CA1 region of the ventral hippocampus (vH), and spatial working memory in a radial arm maze (RAM) task. Interestingly, vH LTP was increased 4 weeks after the last injection day in animals that received only salin
