Effects of a mega wildfire on small mammals and ticks in a boreal forest in Sweden.

Ticks transmit pathogens among wildlife and humans, with small mammals acting as key reservoirs. Climate change may increase disease risk through expanding tick distributions and more frequent wildfires, which alter habitat conditions, influencing small mammal communities and tick populations. In 2014, the Sala Fire burned 131 km² of boreal forest in south-central Sweden. Fire intensity, winter conditions, and proximity to water may influence survival of small mammals and ticks. This study investigated the effects of a mega-fire on the dynamics of tick and small mammal populations, focusing on

High parasitism by Primasubulura jacchi (Ascaridida: Subuluridae) and infestation of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (Acari: Ixodidae) in Callithrix jacchus (Primates: Callitrichidae) in Northeastern Brazil.

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a neotropical primate widely distributed in Brazil and frequently associated with urban and peri-urban environments, a condition that favors exposure to different parasites. The present study aimed to report the occurrence of Primasubulura jacchi and to document the first record of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato parasitizing C. jacchus in Northeastern Brazil. A debilitated female C. jacchus was rescued in a peri-urban area of the municipality of Garanhuns, Pernambuco, and referred to the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of the Agres

Differences in Acaricide Susceptibility Between Parasitic Stages of Rhipicephalus microplus.

Acaricide resistance is a major challenge for the control of Rhipicephalus microplus, and differences between laboratory and field efficacy may complicate the assessment of resistance. However, the influence of parasitic developmental stages on acaricide susceptibility remains poorly understood. Metanymphs were historically considered an acaricide-resistant stage, although this assumption was later questioned. To re-evaluate this issue, three experiments were conducted. First, replicated field spray treatments were performed to evaluate mortality over time. Second, feeding chambers attached to

[Molecular and genetic characteristics of the multicomponent flavi-like Kindia tick virus (Flaviviridae) found in ixodes ticks on the territory of the Republic of Guinea].

INTRODUCTION: Ixodes ticks are vectors for pathogens of many infectious diseases. Recently, during the study of Rhipicephalus geigyi ticks collected from livestock in the Republic of Guinea, a new multicomponent flavi-like RNA virus, called Kindia tick virus (KITV), was discovered with an unusual mechanism for the implementation of genetic information. The aim of the work is to detect and study the genetic diversity of KITV in ixodes ticks collected in the territory of the Kindia province of the Republic of Guinea. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 2021, 324 specimens of ticks of the species Amblyomma

Designing an Intervention Trial of Human-Tick Encounters and Tick-Borne Diseases in Residential Settings Using 4-Poster Devices to Control Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae): Challenges for Site Selection and Device Placement.

Blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis Say, transmit Lyme disease spirochetes and other human pathogens in the eastern United States. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are key reproductive hosts for I. scapularis adults, and therefore control methods targeting deer have the potential for landscape-wide tick suppression. A topical acaricide product, containing 10% permethrin, is self-applied by deer to kill parasitizing ticks when they visit 4-Poster Tick Control Deer Feeders (hereafter, 4-Posters) Previous 4-Poster intervention studies, including in residential settings, demonstrated su

Acaricide activity of organo-modified siloxane and acaricide associations in Rhipicephalus microplus.

Search to a new alternative to control bovine ticks (Rhipicephalus microplus), the present study aimed to evaluate the acaricidal activity of organo-modified siloxane alone and in association with different commercial products or with piperonyl butoxide (BPO). Engorged females were subjected to an in vitro immersion test and 10 groups were used: control, 0.5% siloxane, 1% siloxane, 2% siloxane, 0.5% siloxane + 5% BPO, 1% siloxane + 5% BPO, 2% siloxane + 5% BPO, commercial product, 0.5% siloxane + commercial product, and 1% siloxane + commercial product. After immersion, engorged females were i

Characterisation of cattle anal odour constituents associated with the repellency of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus.

Adults of the Brown Ear Tick (Rhipicephalus appendiculatus) have a predilection for feeding inside and around the ears of cattle and other hosts. A previous study has shown that the tick locates the host ears by 'push-pull' deployment of a repellent blend emitted at the anal region and an attractant blend emitted at the ears. Interestingly, the two odours play reverse roles with Rhipicephalus evertsi, which prefer to feed around the anal region. The present study was undertaken to characterize the major constituents of the cattle anal odour and to evaluate their repellence to R. appendiculatus

Bioassays to evaluate non-contact spatial repellency, contact irritancy, and acute toxicity of permethrin-treated clothing against nymphal Ixodes scapularis ticks.

Summer-weight clothing articles impregnated with permethrin are available as a personal protective measure against human-biting ticks in the United States. However, very few studies have addressed the impact of contact with summer-weight permethrin-treated textiles on tick vigor and behavior. Our aim was to generate new knowledge of how permethrin-treated textiles impact nymphal Ixodes scapularis ticks, the primary vectors in the eastern United States of the causative agents of Lyme disease, human anaplasmosis, and human babesiosis. We developed a series of bioassays designed to: (i) clarify w

Molecular evidence for Toxoplasma gondii in feeding and questing Ixodes ricinus ticks.

The aim of the present study was to detect Toxoplasma gondii in ticks collected from ponies and field vegetation and to determine the role of Shetland ponies as a potential reservoir host for T. gondii. A total of 1737 feeding Ixodes ricinus collected from 49 horses and 371 questing ticks were tested by PCR and sequencing for the presence and genotyping of T. gondii. All ticks were examined in a previous study to detect and identify pathogenic bacterial species. The aim of this study was also to detect co-infection of ticks with these bacteria and T. gondii. Genotyping of the sequenced B1 gene

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) parasitizing humans in an Atlantic rainforest reserve of Southeastern Brazil with notes on host suitability.

While conducting projects on ticks from deer and on tick ecology in animal trails in an Atlantic rainforest reserve in Southeastern Brazil, researchers of our group were bitten by ticks several times. Some of these episodes were recorded. Three species of adult ticks attached to humans: Amblyomma brasiliense Aragão, Amblyomma incisum Neumann, and Amblyomma ovale Koch. Eight nymphal attachments with engorgement on humans were recorded. From these, six molted to adults of A. incisum, one to an adult of A. brasiliense, and one had an anomalous molting, therefore the adult tick could not be proper

Perpetuation of the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia lusitaniae by lizards.

To determine whether the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia lusitaniae is associated with lizards, we compared the prevalence and genospecies of spirochetes present in rodent- and lizard-associated ticks at a site where this spirochete frequently infects questing ticks. Whereas questing nymphal Ixodes ricinus ticks were infected mainly by Borrelia afzelii, one-half of the infected adult ticks harbored B. lusitaniae at our study site. Lyme disease spirochetes were more prevalent in sand lizards (Lacerta agilis) and common wall lizards (Podarcis muralis) than in small rodents. Although subadult ti
