Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is an infection that typically affects the lungs and is a common cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. Primary TB infection, or latent TB, is often asymptomatic; immunocompromised patients are more at risk of TB disease, which manifests with fever, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, and productive cough. Although not common, infection can spread hematogenously to other parts of the body (e.g., kidneys and spine) and lead to extrapulmonary TB. Diagnosis made through microscopic examination for acid-fast bacilli (

Spinal tuberculosis is a frequent skeletal involvement in tuberculosis. We report 122 cases between 1983 and 1998 of Pott's disease explored by plain radiographies in all cases, CT-scan in 22 cases and MRI in 6 cases. The lesion involved one localization in 98 cases, two localizations in 9 cases and multiple localizations in 15 cases. The usual form associating the discal and vertebral involvement was noted in 70%. Unusual forms were seen in 30% of the cases The localizations were: posterior arch (20 cases), centrosomatic (10 cases), suboccipital (4 cases) and subligamentar (2 cases). In addit

The incidence of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) has been on the rise in the setting of immunodeficiency syndromes such as acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Its diagnosis has been facilitated by the advent of a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) PCR assay. The reported high sensitivity and specificity of this assay has made it the cornerstone of diagnosis of PCNSL, replacing more traditional methods such as an open CNS biopsy. Here, we have described a patient with a known history of C3 AIDS presenting with lower extremity weakness and eventual myelopa

The informational gains obtained by the use of pinhole collimator scintigraphy (PCS) have been well documented. The present study has been undertaken to prospectively investigate its efficacy in diagnosing several commonly occurring spinal diseases. Patient material consisted of metastatic cancer (39 vertebrae), compression fractures (33 vertebrae), tuberculous spondylitis (17 vertebrae), and pyogenic spondylitis (six vertebrae). PCS findings were characterized in terms of localization, appearance, and homogeneity of abnormal radionuclide accumulation. Thus, metastatic cancer manifested as dif

A 76-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital in October 2007 because of fever and anorexia. Chest computed tomography demonstrated consolidation and reticular shadows in the right middle lobe and left lingula. Pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacteriosis was diagnosed based on isolation of Mycobacterium intracellulare from her sputum. Her symptoms, which included fever, were improved by chemotherapy with clarithromycin and ethambutol, but the treatment was halted due to adverse effects. Subsequently, she complained of lumbago from April 2008, and spinal osteomyelitis from the T-4 through T-5 v

OBJECTIVE: To illustrate the dilemmas in the diagnosis and management of intramedullary tuberculomas of the spinal cord.
METHODS: Case report of a 32 year-old man with tuberculous meningitis. The presence of unexplained urinary retention and progressive weakness in the legs led to the discovery of an additional tuberculoma of the conus medullaris.
SETTING: Dicle University Diyarbakir, Turkey.
RESULTS: The patient was on a 1-year course of isoniazid, pyrazinamide and rifampicin, and responded well to conservative treatment. Our patient's unique features were represented by the worsening of n

A group of sixteen children suffering from osteoarticular tuberculosis were seen over the past five years in the Belgrade Paediatric Surgery Clinic. This disease is now extremely rare and effects chiefly children born outside maternity departments and not receiving BCG vaccination at birth for different reasons. The osteoarticular tuberculosis rate in the Socialist Republic of Serbia over this period was thus one in 500,000 children. The disease is three times as common in male children, most often affecting the hip and presenting above all at about the age of nine. At the time of admission, e

OBJECT: Significant numbers of patients with spinal tuberculosis (TB), especially in developing countries, still present late after disease onset with severe neurological deficits. The authors conducted a study to assess the outcome in these patients.
METHODS: Fifty-nine patients with spinal TB and severe motor deficits underwent surgery at the authors' center during the past 10 years. Data obtained in 48 patients with a minimum of 3 months of follow up (mean follow-up period 12.8 months) were analyzed. The disease in 34 patients was characterized by Frankel Grade A/B (Medical Research Counci
