Urethral obstruction malformation complex: a cause of abdominal muscle deficiency and the "prune belly".

Abdominal muscle deficiency with a "prune belly" abdomen as been a major feature of the so-called prune belly syndrome, which has been regarded as a specific entity, although the etiology and developmental pathology are not understood. We present evidence that abdominal muscle deficiency is an etiologically nonspecific anatomic defect which is secondary to fetal abdominal distention of various causes. One of the more common causes is urethral obstruction with consequent early bladder distention, causing abdominal distention and other anomalies, a constellation of findings which we have termed

A preliminary study on degenerate characteristics of lumbar and abdominal muscles in middle-aged and elderly people with varying bone mass.

BACKGROUND: With the wide application of QCT in the clinical assessment of osteoporosis and sarcopenia, the characteristics of musculoskeletal degeneration in middle-aged and elderly people need to be further revealed. We aimed to investigate the degenerate characteristics of lumbar and abdominal muscles in middle-aged and elderly people with varying bone mass. METHODS: A total of 430 patients aged 40-88 years were divided into normal, osteopenia, and osteoporosis groups according to quantitative computed tomography (QCT) criteria. The skeletal muscular mass indexes (SMIs) of five muscles [ab…

Mutation of FLNA attenuating the migration of abdominal muscles contributed to Melnick-Needles syndrome (MNS) in a family with recurrent miscarriage.

BACKGROUND: Filamin A, encoded by the X-linked gene FLNA, links the cell membrane with the cytoskeleton and acts as a regulator of the actin cytoskeleton. Mutations in FLNA cause a large spectrum of congenital malformations during embryonic development, including Melnick-Needles syndrome (MNS). However, reports of MNS, especially in males, are rare, and the pathogenesis molecular mechanisms are not well understood. METHODS: We found a family with two consecutive miscarriages of similar fetuses with multiple malformations. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and tissues, and whole exome se

CT anthropometric analysis of the prognosis of traumatic brain injury: A retrospective study to compare between psoas muscle and abdominal skeletal muscle.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that skeletal muscle area (SMA) and psoas muscle area (PMA), markers for sarcopenia, are associated with the prognosis of many diseases. However, it remains unclear which of the two is a superior prognostic marker. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyse these markers in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: Patients with TBI [abbreviated injury scale (AIS) score of 4 or 5] were selected. Those with an AIS score of 4 or 5 for chest, abdomen, or extremity lesion were excluded. Clinical data, including Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS)

Electromyography activity of the abdominal muscles during exercises with and without aid from upper limbs in healthy individuals: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with pronounced abdominal muscle impairment often struggle to perform conventional abdominal strengthening exercises, particularly during the initial phases of rehabilitation. Identifying alternative exercise positions that minimize these challenges while maintaining adequate muscular engagement is essential for effective training and clinical practice. This study aimed to compare the EMG activity of the abdominal and shoulder extensors muscles during traditional curl-ups, modified curl-ups, and roll-ups with balls. METHOD: Forty healthy participants (20 male, 20 fem

Abdominal aortic calcification is independently associated with increased atrophy and fatty infiltration of the lumbar paraspinal muscles: a retrospective cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Aortic abdominal calcification (AAC) is associated with spine-related conditions, such as lower back pain and reduced bone mineral density. Similar to peripheral vascular disease, AAC possibly reduces blood flow to the lumbar posterior paraspinal muscles (PPM) which may lead to atrophy and increased fatty infiltration. METHODS: Imaging of patients with lower back pain was analyzed. AAC was assessed on lateral lumbar radiographs according to the Kauppila classification. The cross-sectional area of the PPM was measured on a T2-weighted axial MRI sequence and the functional cross-sec

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Perioperative Muscle Wasting Following Major Abdominal Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Muscle wasting in the perioperative period is a frequent and clinically significant complication following major abdominal surgery and is associated with adverse outcomes, including increased postoperative complications, prolonged hospitalisation and worsened mortality. Despite its prevalence, the magnitude and course of perioperative muscle wasting (POMW) remain incompletely understood, and current interventions are limited. Current definitions applied to sarcopenia do not suitably apply to cohorts undergoing major abdominal surgery, and therefore, we propose the concept of POMW,

Impact of psoas muscle area measurement in complex open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

OBJECTIVE: Cross-sectional psoas muscle area (PMA), measured by computed tomography images, is a surrogate of the muscle mass. We aimed to evaluate the impact of PMA and length of stay (LOS) after complex open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (OAAAR). METHODS: A retrospective review between January 2013 and January 2017 was conducted. The main outcome was to assess the PMA as a predictor of LOS. Demographics and clinical variables were collected, and Spearman's rank coefficient was used to define the correlation of PMA and LOS. RESULTS: A total of 72 patients were studied with a mean age of

The association between abdominal muscle mass quantified by computed tomography and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a significant health concern among postmenopausal women owing to its association with increased fracturerisk and morbidity. Although traditional risk factors such as hormonal changes, dietary intake, and physical activity have been extensivelyinvestigated, the role of muscle mass, particularly abdominal muscle mass, in bone health remains incompletely understood. This studyaimed to investigate the association between abdominal muscle mass, as measured by computed tomography (CT), and osteoporosis inpostmenopausal Korean women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospec
