Validation of the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire Against Actigraphy in Hospitalized Patients and Its Association with Delirium Risk.

PURPOSE: To validate the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ) relative to actigraphy on general hospital wards and to examine the predictive value of sleep parameters for delirium. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This multicenter, prospective observational study was conducted on internal medicine, surgical, and neurology wards across seven healthcare institutions in the Czech Republic. The analysis included 133 patients (424 nights). Individual RCSQ items and corresponding nocturnal actigraphic sleep parameters (MotionWatch 8) were compared using linear mixed-effects models (LMM). Associations …

Associations between actigraphy estimates of sleep and circadian rhythmicity and psychotropic medications in bipolar disorders: An exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION: Disturbances in sleep and circadian rhythmicity (CR) are frequent in individuals with bipolar disorders (BD). Very few studies explored the associations between psychotropic medications and these disturbances in euthymic BD. Therefore, we aimed at exploring the associations between several classes of medications (lithium, sedative/non-sedative Atypical Antipsychotics (AAP), anticonvulsants, antidepressants, benzodiazepines) and sleep disturbances and CR dimensions in a sample of euthymic individuals with BD. METHODS: We included euthymic adults with BD type 1 or 2 assessed with

Investigating subjective and objective sleep in functional neurological disorder using self-reports and actigraphy - A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a frequent and disabling neuropsychiatric condition. Patients frequently report comorbid sleep disturbances; however, the role and aetiology of sleep impairments in FND remain incompletely understood. METHODS: We assessed sleep quality in a cohort of mixed FND patients and healthy controls (HC). All participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI; subjective), whereas patients additionally underwent a 2-week actigraphy (objective). First, we compared subjective sleep quality between groups and assessed the role of comorbid …

Melatonin ineffective in neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis patients with fragmented or normal motor activity rhythms recorded by wrist actigraphy.

Melatonin was tested as a sleeping pill in five patients with neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses. The single-blind, placebo-controlled study consisted of motor activity recordings, sleep logs, and administration of placebo or melatonin (2.5 or 5 mg). Daily motor activity rhythms were measured by wrist actigraphy during four 7-day periods (baseline, placebo, melatonin 2.5 mg, and melatonin 5 mg). The placebo or melatonin was administered in the evenings for 3 weeks, and the recordings were made during the last week of the 3-week treatment. Sleep logs were kept by the caregivers during the recording…

Adolescents' next-day perceptions of their sleep quality, quantity, sleepiness and sleepiness-related symptoms relative to actigraphy metrics.

BACKGROUND: Next-day perceptions of sleep and related symptoms are frequently collected in research and clinical practice, but how they correlate with objective sleep measures in adolescents has received little attention. METHODS: Participants were aged 16-17 years and without a sleep disorder, anxiety or depression diagnosis. Seven-day wrist actigraphy was collected alongside daily survey ratings of sleep quality, sufficiency, morning and daytime sleepiness, and sleepiness-related mood and concentration. Within-person associations between daily actigraphic sleep metrics (6 variables represen…

Comparing Human-Smartphone Interactions and Actigraphy Measurements for Circadian Rhythm Stability and Adiposity: Algorithm Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the relationships between adiposity and circadian rhythm and compare the measurement of circadian rhythm using both actigraphy and a smartphone app that tracks human-smartphone interactions. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that the app-based measurement may provide more comprehensive information, including light-sensitive melatonin secretion and social rhythm, and have stronger correlations with adiposity indicators. METHODS: We enrolled a total of 78 participants (mean age 41.5, SD 9.9 years; 46/78, 59% women) from both an obesity outpatient clinic and…

Effects of a single session intervention on actigraphy-measured sleep for adolescents with insufficient and irregular sleep: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: We previously developed a brief, behavioral intervention (Sleep Promotion Program, SPP) that demonstrated feasibility, acceptability, and increased self-reported sleep. Here, we tested the effects of SPP on the trial's secondary outcomes: sleep duration, regularity, and timing as measured by actigraphy and conducted a secondary analysis of SPP's effects on rest-activity rhythms. METHODS: Forty participants (ages 13-15) with insufficient and irregular sleep randomized to SPP-continuation (n = 22), or to sleep monitoring-SPP (n = 18), had analyzable actigraphy data. SPP included s…

Examining the heritability of actigraphy-assessed and parent-reported sleep duration in a community sample of twins across childhood and adolescence.

Meta-analytic evidence indicates that the heritability of sleep duration increases across infancy and childhood, and peaks in adolescence, h … dolescence, and shared environmental influences decreased (h2 = .19-.55, C = .37-.69). In contrast, actigraphy-assessed sleep duration was highly heritable at 8, 10, and 13 years (h2 = .65-.75, C = .00, E = .25-.35). Bivariate Cholesky decomposition models were fit at 8-, 10-, and 13-years, and demonstrated that the genetic covariance between parent-reported …

Polygenic risk scores for mood disorders and actigraphy estimates of sleep and circadian rhythms: A preliminary study in bipolar disorders.

In bipolar disorders, abnormalities of sleep patterns and of circadian rhythms of activity are observed during mood episodes, but also persist during euthymia. Shared vulnerabilities between mood disorders and abnormalities of sleep patterns and circadian rhythms of activity have been suggested. This exploratory study investigated the association between polygenic risk scores for bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder, actigraphy estimates of sleep patterns, and circadian rhythms of activity in a sample of 62 euthymic individuals with bipolar disorder. The polygenic risk score - bipola…
