BACKGROUND: Thymic carcinomas are rare and aggressive tumours. They constitute a heterogeneous group of tumours with various histological patterns and subtypes resembling epithelial tumours arising from other organs.
CASE PRESENTATION: We hereby represent a case of primary thymic carcinoma with adenoid cystic carcinoma-like features (TCACC) which is an extremely rare variant of thymic adenocarcinoma. To date and to the best of our knowledge, there are nine reported cases in literature and ours is the tenth. Our case was treated surgically but the implementation of adjuvant chemoradiotherapy h

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a slowly growing malignant tumor with high local recurrence, perineural and vascular invasion. This tumor might arise from the glands of upper respiratory tract and oral cavity (eg, salivary or serous or mucous). Here we report the case of a 65-year-old woman who was referred to our unit for left retro-auricular radiating pain with trigger points and frontal headache since 6 months. There was no involvement of cranial nerves. Imaging screening using MRI, Positron emission tomography with 2-[fluorine-18] fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose, Gallium-68 DOTA-Phe1-Tyr3-Octreotide

The aim of the study was to observe, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the ratio of bacterial biofilm coverage of adenoidal tissue in children diagnosed with chronic rhinosinusitis (CR), compared to the ratio of adenoid bacterial biofilm coverage in children diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We also performed histopathological and immunohistochemical tests to correlate the results with the images obtained from SEM. We estimated, using an image analysis program, the coverage ratio with bacterial biofilm on the surface of the lymphatic tissue. Adenoid vegetation extracted fro

Adenoid ameloblastoma with dentinoid is an uncommon benign odontogenic neoplasm, and its unicystic variant seems to be even rarer. A 34-year-old man was referred for evaluation of an asymptomatic swelling in the posterior maxilla. Intraoral examination showed an expansive lesion, soft to palpation, covered by a normal color mucosa. Cone beam computed tomography revealed a well-defined unilocular hypodense tumor involving the left maxillary sinus. Histopathological examination of the surgically excised specimen showed a cystic tumor lined by an ameloblastic-like epithelium containing columnar b

The objective of the present study was to demonstrate the clinical significance and possibilities of diagnostics and treatment of the intra-adenoid cysts in the nasopharynx as exemplified by an original observation of an individual case. The cystic structures in the nasopharynx rarely manifest themselves clinically and are known to produce the non-specific symptoms. The patients admitted to the L.I. Sverzhevskiy Research Institute of Clinical Otorhinolaryngology for the surgical treatment of nasopharyngeal cysts account for 0.05% of the total number of the hospitalized subjects. This article r

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a relatively rare tumor of epithelial cell origin, most commonly arising from major salivary glands. It is uncommonly found outside the major or minor salivary glands and is especially rare when located in the nasal cavity. Diagnosis and treatment of ACC pose numerous challenges, partly due to its biological behavior of slow growth, high tendency of local recurrence, and perineural invasion. We present the case of a 67-year-old male with complaints of facial pain and swelling, with a CT scan showing a soft tissue mass extending from the right nasal cavity with

PURPOSE: Adenoid hypertrophy is a physical alteration that may affect speech, and a speech disorder can have other negative effects on a child's life. Airway obstruction leads to constricted oral breathing and causes postural alterations of several oro-facial structures, including the mouth, tongue, and hyoid bone. The postural modifications may affect several aspects of speech production.
METHODS: In this study, we compared articulation errors in 19 children with adenoid hypertrophy (subject group) to those of 33 children with functional articulation disorders independent of anatomical probl

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm most commonly originating in the salivary glands of head and neck region. The clinical and pathological findings typical of this tumour include slow growth, perineural invasion and potential local recurrence. Up to 50% of these tumours occur in the intraoral minor salivary glands usually in the hard palate. We present a case report of a 26-year-old woman who was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the right buccal mucosa. The peculiarity of the lesion and the approach we made is the key factor in the presentation.

A 48-year-old man presented with an enlarging mass of the right upper eyelid over a 1-month period. Nine years prior, the patient was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the right maxillary sinus and underwent a total maxillectomy followed by local radiotherapy. Over the previous year, the patient had been treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy for multiple organ metastases, including the spine, chest, and oral cavity. Ophthalmic examination revealed a white, round mass on the tarsal conjunctiva of the right upper eyelid, measuring approximately 1 × 1 cm, and 2 palpable subcut

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of salivary glands is a slow-growing malignant tumor, characterized by wide local infiltration, perineural spread, a propensity to local recurrence and late distant metastasis. Although ACC is the second most common malignant salivary gland neoplasm and constitutes approximately one-third of all salivary gland malignancies, it is relatively rare in parotid gland. Here, we present a case report of a cribriform type of ACC involving parotid salivary gland in a 66-year-old female.

UNLABELLED: The assessment of adenoids by x-ray imaging has been the topic of heated debate, but few studies have looked into the reliability of most existing radiographic parameters.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to verify the intra-examiner and inter-examiner reproducibility of the adenoid radiographic assessment methods.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional case series study. Forty children of both genders aged between 4 and 14 were enrolled. They were selected based on complaints of nasal obstruction or mouth breathing and suspicion of pharyngeal tonsil hypertrophy. Cavum x-rays

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant epithelial tumor of the salivary glands. It accounts for less than 1% of all head and neck cancers and less than 10% of all salivary gland neoplasms. It shows slow and indolent growth rate, low probability of regional nodal metastases, high propensity for perineural invasion, multiple and/or delayed recurrences and high incidence of distant metastases. It is the most frequently encountered malignant tumor of the minor salivary glands. The oral cavity and the oropharynx are the most common sites followed by the parotid, submandibular gland, paranasal sinu

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is a rare neoplasm. We report two observations occurring in female patients, 54 and 65 years old, who consulted for a mastodynia. Clinical examination showed limited painful breast nodules. On ultrasound and mammography they are well-limited bulky mass without microcalcifications. Diagnosis was based on final histopathological exam completed by immunohistochemistry or after slides review. The two patients were treated by mammectomy plus adjuvant radiotherapy and remain alive in remission with a follow-up of 29 and 36 months.

The examination of 169 children aged 3-15 years admitted to ENT department for exacerbation of chronic adenoiditis has shown high chlamydial contamination of the pharyngeal mucosa. Identification of chlamydial structures and specific antibodies was performed with application of direct (polymerase chain reaction, immunofluorescence) and indirect (EIA) methods. Specific structure of the verified pathogens as well as clinical manifestations of adenoiditis associated with chlamydial infection and characteristics of immune response of the child to chlamydia are described.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare epithelial malignancy, which tends to grow slowly. ACC is an intractable neoplasm due to its ability to invade perineural spaces. Local recurrence after excision is not unusual. ACC most commonly arises in the lacrimal gland. Very rarely, ACC originates from accessory lacrimal gland tissue. Here, we present a patient with a large ACC of the central upper eyelid, which had been misdiagnosed and treated as a chalazion without histological examination. Its origin most likely is an accessory lacrimal gland.

A retrospective review of 14 patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the tongue treated between 1955 and 1997 was performed. Treatment consisted of surgery (n = 2), radiotherapy (n = 2), chemotherapy (n = 1), or combination therapy (n = 9). The 2-, 5-, and 10-year absolute survival rates were 92%, 79%, and 63%, respectively. Seventy-five percent of the patients who died of cancer succumbed to distant metastases. However, long-term survival was common despite a high incidence of local and distant recurrence. The presence of positive surgical margins, the incidence of regional metastases, the

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a slowly growing tumor with a particular tendency to infiltrate the surrounding tissue by perineural spread. The clinical diagnosis may prove difficult due to the submucons extension of the tumor, especially at the skull base. This article outlines the clinical characteristics, diagnostics, and treatment modalities in a series of 56 patients with an ACC in the head and neck diagnosed between 1970 and 1998 in 32 females and 24 males. The youngest patient was aged 24 years, the oldest 77 years. The average age was 54 years. In 16 patients the tumor originated in
