Air Pollution and Headache Disorders.

Air pollution, the most prevalent form of pollution worldwide, is associated with a wide range of neurological disorders, including neurodegenerative conditions, stroke, autism, depression, and developmental delay. There is accumulating evidence on the association between air pollution and headache disorders, especially migraine. Many classical and non-classical air pollutants have been associated with headache, including particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds. There has also been …

Orbital Fractures and Air Travel.

UNLABELLED: Previous surveys indicate that the majority of clinicians recommend avoidance of air travel for a period of time following an acute orbital fracture. This advice has largely been based on the theoretical risk that in-flight pressure variation may exacerbate orbital emphysema and produce visual compromise, though no previous reviews have been conducted on the evidence underpinning this advice. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to conduct a systematic review of the literature pertaining to the safety of air travel in the setting of an acute orbital fracture. A systematic revi…

Air pollution and indoor settings.

Indoor environments contribute significantly to total human exposure to air pollutants, as people spend most of their time indoors. Household air pollution (HAP) resulting from cooking with polluting ("dirty") fuels, which include coal, kerosene, and biomass (wood, charcoal, crop residues, and animal manure) is a global environmental health problem. Indoor pollutants are gases, particulates, toxins, and microorganisms among others, that can have an impact especially on the health of children and adults through a combination of different mechanisms on oxidative stress and gene activation, epige…

Air Pollution and Skin Aging.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: The evidence on the role of air pollution on skin aging has increased in recent years. The accumulating evidence is based on both, epidemiological and mechanistic studies. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the recent evidence on the impacts of air pollution on skin aging as well as identify knowledge gaps for future research. RECENT FINDINGS: Traffic-related air pollution exposure (particulate matter (PM), soot and nitrogen dioxide (NO2)) has been associated with premature skin aging in several independent cohorts. In real life, human skin is additionally expose…

Rats Sniff Off Toxic Air.

Breathing air is a fundamental human need, yet its safety, when challenged by various harmful or lethal substances, is often not properly guarded. For example, air toxicity is currently monitored only for a single or a limited number of known toxicants, thus failing to warn against possible hazardous air fully. Here, we discovered that, within minutes, living rats emitted distinctive profiles of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via breath when exposed to various airborne toxicants such as endotoxin, O3, ricin, and CO2. Compared to background indoor air, when exposed to ricin or endotoxin aero…

Cardiovascular effects of air pollution.

Air pollution is composed of particulate matter (PM) and gaseous pollutants, such as nitrogen dioxide and ozone. PM is classified according to size into coarse particles (PM10), fine particles (PM2.5) and ultrafine particles. We aim to provide an original review of the scientific evidence from epidemiological and experimental studies examining the cardiovascular effects of outdoor air pollution. Pooled epidemiological studies reported that a 10μg/m3 increase in long-term exposure to PM2.5 was associated with an 11% increase in cardiovascular mortality. Increased cardiovascular mortality was al…

Air pollution and cardiovascular disease.

An escalating body of epidemiologic and clinical research provides compelling evidence that exposure to fine particulate matter air pollution contributes to the development of cardiovascular disease and the triggering of acute cardiac events. There are 3 potential mediating pathways that have been implicated, including "systemic spillover," autonomic imbalance, and circulating particulate matter constituents. Further support that the increased morbidity and mortality attributed to air pollution comes from studies demonstrating the adverse cardiovascular effects of even brief periods of exposur…

[Thromboembolic events and air travel].

Relation between air travel and thromboembolic events is clearly demonstrated. The risk increases for travel of more than 5,000 km. Women are suspected to have an increased risk. However, the role of other potential thromboembolic risk factors remains unknown. The role of hypoxia and hypobaria, of the class traveled and of usual thromboembolic risk factors are unclear. Then, prophylactic strategy has to be decided regarding risk related to both travel and patient. Compartmental prophylactic therapy is largely indicated. Elastic stocking is widely recommended. Pharmacologic prophylactic therapy…

Air pollution and cardiovascular disease.

It is well recognized that the exposure to air pollution is associated with many adverse effects on health. A strong epidemiological association has been particularly observed between acute and chronic exposure to air pollutants and the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these effects have not been fully identified but potential pathways include endothelial or autonomic dysfunction and systemic reactions such as hypercoagulability, inflammation and oxidative stress. The current knowledge of the short-term and long-term cardiovascular effects of …

Air pollution and cardiovascular disease.

Air pollution is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Recent experimental and epidemiologic studies show that particulate matter (PM) air pollution with PM10 or inhalable (thoracic) particles (mean aerodynamic diameter < 10 microm) is most consistently linked with acute and chronic cardiovascular effects. Fine (PM2.5) and ultrafine (PM0.1) particles (aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 and < 0.1 microm) are able to reach the small airways and terminal alveoli, and PM0.1 can also be translocated directly into the systemic circulation. PM2.5 and PM0.1 are mainly formed by fos…

[Air transport, aeronautic medicine, health].

There were 3.2 billion airline passengers in 2006, compared to only 30 million in 1950. Intercontinental health disparities create a risk of pandemics such as SARS and so-called bird flu. Precautions are now being implemented both in airports and in aircraft, in addition to measures intended to prevent the spread of malaria and arboviral diseases, such as vector eradication, elimination of stagnant water, malaria prophylaxis, vaccination, and use of repellents. These measures are dealt with in international health regulations, which have existed since 1851 and were last updated on 15 June 2007…

Air reflux after external dacryocystorhinostomy.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the prevalence of air reflux after external dacryocystorhinostomy, its natural history, and its relation to symptomatic cure. METHODS: More than a year after lacrimal surgery, patients were contacted via a structured telephone interview and were questioned about air reflux and lacrimal symptoms. RESULTS: Interviews were completed by 77 patients (98 operations). Postoperative air reflux had been noted after 46 of 98 operations (47%) and persisted in 36 of 46 eyes (78%), at a mean follow-up of 58 months. Reflux occurred in 36% (8 of 22) of eyes after membranectomy, a ra…

[Air pollution and cardiovascular disease].

Cardiovascular atherothrombosis is the most common cause of death globally, with several well-known risk factors. Air pollution is a byproduct of fuel combustion by motor vehicles, power plants and industrial factories. It is composed of gases, fluids and particulate matter (PM) of different sizes, which include basic carbon, organic carbonic molecules and metals such as vanadium, nickel, zinc and iron. These particles are subdivided by their median size, a major contributing factor for their capability to enter the human body through the respiratory system. Most of the epidemiological studies…

Air quality assessment for Portugal.

According to the Air Quality Framework Directive, air pollutant concentration levels have to be assessed and reported annually by each European Union member state, taking into consideration European air quality standards. Plans and programmes should be implemented in zones and agglomerations where pollutant concentrations exceed the limit and target values. The main objective of this study is to perform a long-term air quality simulation for Portugal, using the CHIMERE chemistry-transport model, applied over Portugal, for the year 2001. The model performance was evaluated by comparing its resu…

Protein nitration by polluted air.

The effects of air pollution on allergic diseases are not yetwell-understood. Here, we show that proteins, in particular birch pollen proteins including the allergen Bet v 1, are efficiently nitrated by polluted air. This posttranslational modification of proteins is likely to trigger immune reactions and provides a molecular rationale for the promotion of allergies bytraffic-related air pollution. Enzyme immunoassays have been used to determine equivalent degrees of nitration (EDN) for protein samples exposed to urban outdoor air and synthetic gas mixtures. The observed rates of nitration wer…
