Enhanced contact of cosolvent and DNAPL in porous media by concurrent injection of cosolvent and air.

Dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) contamination is a major environmental problem. Cosolvent flooding is proposed as a remedial alternative to water flooding. The efficacy of cosolvent flooding is a function of the degree of contact between the injected remedial fluid and the resident DNAPL Poor contact may result from remedial fluids traveling in preferential flow paths which bypass trapped DNAPL Thus, the motivation for this study was to use the preferential flow of air in porous media to enhance contact between the injected cosolvent and resident DNAPL The study evaluated concurrent inje

Development of an Empirical Formula for Describing Human Inhalability of Airborne Particles at Low Wind Speeds and Calm Air.

Based on experiments conducted in low wind speed and calm air environments, the current International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and European Committee for Standardization (CEN) convention modeling human aerosol inhalability (i.e. aspiration efficiency) may not be valid when wind speeds are less than 0.5 ms-1. Additionally, the convention is based primarily on mouth breathing data and aerosols with aerodynamic diameters smaller than 100 µm. Since the convention's development, experimental inhalation data at wind speeds lower than 0.5 ms-1 for nose, mouth, and oronasal breathing hav

Computational fluid dynamics investigation of human aspiration in low velocity air: orientation effects on nose-breathing simulations.

An understanding of how particles are inhaled into the human nose is important for developing samplers that measure biologically relevant estimates of exposure in the workplace. While previous computational mouth-breathing investigations of particle aspiration have been conducted in slow moving air, nose breathing still required exploration. Computational fluid dynamics was used to estimate nasal aspiration efficiency for an inhaling humanoid form in low velocity wind speeds (0.1-0.4 m s(-1)). Breathing was simplified as continuous inhalation through the nose. Fluid flow and particle trajector

Visualization of the airflow around a life-sized, heated, breathing mannequin at ultralow windspeeds.

During the past two decades, there has been considerable progress in developing particle size-selective criteria for aerosol sampling and exposure assessment that relate more realistically to actual human exposures than previously. An important aspect has been the aspiration efficiency-the 'inhalability'-with which particles enter through the nose and mouth of aerosol-exposed individuals during breathing. Most of the reported experiments to determine inhalability have been conducted in wind tunnels with life-sized, breathing mannequins, for windspeeds from 0.5 m s(-1) and above. A few experime

The relative influence of the anthropogenic air pollutants on the atmospheric turbidity factors measured at an urban monitoring station.

This work is based on simultaneous measurements of direct solar radiation along with other chemical measurements, with the objective of investigating the diurnal and seasonal variations of atmospheric turbidity factors (i.e., Linke's factor, Angström's coefficient, and aerosol optical depth). Relationships between atmospheric turbidity factors, expressing the solar radiation extinction, and anthropogenic air pollutants were also evaluated. The frequency of occurrence of the individual indices has been established to describe the sky conditions. The preliminary results obtained indicate high va

A long-term study of oxides of nitrogen, sulphur dioxide, and ammonia for a port and harbor region in India.

A long-term study of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), sulphur dioxide (SO2), and ammonia (NH3) has been performed in a port and harbor region in India from January 1997 to December 2000. Meteorological data was also collected to establish the correlation with gaseous pollutants concentrations. Monthly mean concentrations of NOx were in the range of 19.5-59.0 microg/m3 and were observed to be highest during winter season. Monthly mean concentrations of SO2 were in the range of 8.6-51.3 microg/m3 and were observed to be highest during winter season. The concentrations of SO2 increased gradually from 18

A simple model which predicts some non-linear features between atmospheric sulphur and sulphur emissions.

This paper develops a simple model and suggests a plausible chemico-physical mechanism for a non-linear response between atmospheric sulphur and sulphur emissions. It contains simplified representations of transport, deposition and conversion processes and uses a proxy in-cloud oxidant-limited reaction along a pathway connecting an emission source with a receptor site. Individual pathway responses to emissions show linear behaviour above a threshold. However, by averaging the values of SO2 at the receptor site from different pathways a continuous non-linear relationship is obtained. As emissio

Experimental validation of a computational fluid dynamics model for IAQ applications in ice rink arenas.

Many ice rink arenas have ice resurfacing equipment that uses fossil fuel as power. The combustion byproducts are a major source of contamination. Ventilation along with other pollution source control measures is the most widely applied strategy to lower the contaminant level below the threshold limit and maintain acceptable indoor air quality (IAQ). A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model has been developed and used to predict the contaminant concentrations, air velocity, and air temperature distributions in ice rinks. The numerical results agree reasonably with the corresponding experimen

Modelling the spatial distribution of SO2 and NOx emissions in Ireland.

The spatial distributions of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions are essential inputs to models of atmospheric transport and deposition. Information of this type is required for international negotiations on emission reduction through the critical load approach. High-resolution emission maps for the Republic of Ireland have been created using emission totals and a geographical information system, supported by surrogate statistics and landcover information. Data have been subsequently allocated to the EMEP 50 x 50-km grid, used in long-range transport models for the invest

A case of frog breathing.

Frog breathing (glossopharyngeal breathing) is a useful technique employed to increase ventilation when respiratory muscles are paralysed. It is a technique used by many patients with chronic poliomyelitis, yet many chest physicians and physiotherapists are unfamiliar with this breathing maneuver. Glossopharyngeal breathing coordinates movements of the tongue, cheeks and pharynx to force air from the mouth into the lungs. We report a case of glossopharyngeal breathing, demonstrating a 3 fold increase in vital capacity in a subject with chronic poliomyelitis.

Panoramic errors in pediatric patients with special needs.

This study aimed to analyze the types and frequencies of panoramic technical errors in pediatric patients with special needs, as compared to matching images of patients with normal developmental patterns. Panoramic images of 100 pediatric patients, with equal numbers of either special needs or healthy controls, referred to our Oral Maxillofacial Imaging unit, were retrospectively examined by four blinded observers for the presence of four common technical errors: palatoglossal air space, movement, positioning errors, and foreign bodies appearance. In addition, they subjectively determined the

A Possible Contraindication for Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Hepaticogastrostomy: A Giant Hiatal Hernia.

We present the case of an 82-year-old female with obstructive jaundice secondary to a malignant distal biliary stricture. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided hepaticogastrostomy (EUS-HGS) was performed. The presence of a giant hiatal hernia induced dynamic liver movement during respiration, leading to unstable scope positioning. Despite the successful placement of a long, partially covered metal stent from the left intrahepatic bile duct to the intra-abdominal stomach, computed tomography performed three days later revealed free air and an increased distance between the liver and stomach. Formation of Shaped Charge Projectile in Air and Water.

With the improvement of the antiknock performance of warships, shaped charge warheads have been focused on and widely used to design underwater weapons. In order to cause efficient damage to warships, it is of great significance to study the formation of shaped charge projectiles in air and water. This paper uses Euler governing equations to establish numerical models of shaped charges subjected to air and underwater explosions. The formation and the movement of Explosively Formed Projectiles (EFPs) in different media for three cases: air explosion and underwater explosions with and without ai

Impact of Reduced Transport Volume on Deployment Skillsets and Operational En Route Critical Care Skill Sustainment.

INTRODUCTION: Critical Care Air Transport (CCAT) operational experience has steadily declined during recent low-tempo operations, with deployment readiness suffering from the "peacetime effect." The objective of this study was to compare critical care interventions performed by CCAT teams during high-tempo versus low-tempo operations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the patient population and clinician-performed interventions during high-tempo (2007-2012) versus low-tempo (2015-2019) operations was conducted using abstraction from CCAT records in the Department of Defense T

Persulfidation protects from oxidative stress under nonphotorespiratory conditions in Arabidopsis.

Hydrogen sulfide is a signaling molecule in plants that regulates essential biological processes through protein persulfidation. However, little is known about sulfide-mediated regulation in relation to photorespiration. Here, we performed label-free quantitative proteomic analysis and observed a high impact on protein persulfidation levels when plants grown under nonphotorespiratory conditions were transferred to air, with 98.7% of the identified proteins being more persulfidated under suppressed photorespiration. Interestingly, a higher level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was detected und

The effect of treadmill speed on ventilation at the start of exercise in man.

1. The change in ventilation at the start of exercise was determined during both hyperoxic rebreathing and air breathing in four volunteers. 2. In order to differentiate between the effects of limb-movement frequency and exercise load in terms of oxygen uptake, three treadmill exercises were tested: E1, at an oxygen uptake of 1 l/min on a level treadmill; E2, at 2 l/min on an inclined treadmill at the same speed as E1; E3, at 2 l/min on a level treadmill at a higher speed. All of the exercises were performed at a walking pace. 3. Prior to rebreathing, hyperventilation for 5 min to 20 mmHg was

Cocontraction in the elbow and shoulder muscles during rapid cyclic movements in an aquatic environment.

The purpose of this study was to document the cocontraction patterns of the combined wrist-elbow-shoulder joint muscles during maximal-effort swimming. The subjects, nine high-performance athletes, swam 4 x 100 m at maximal effort with a 45 s rest after each 100 m run. Electromyographic (EMG) recording of six muscles was performed with surface electrodes and telemetry. The quality of the arm movement was verified with two video cameras and the movement was divided into four phases: the initial press, the inward scull, the outward scull and the air recovery. Eccentric work and antagonist co-act

Use of a Geographic Information System and lichens to map air pollution in a tropical city: San José, Costa Rica.

There are no studies of air pollution bio-indicators based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Costa Rica. In this study we present the results of a project that analyzed tree trunk lichens as bioindicators of air pollution in 40 urban parks located along the passage of wind through the city of San Jose in 2008 and 2009. The data were processed with GIS and are presented in an easy to understand color coded isoline map. Our results are consistent with the generally accepted view that lichens respond to the movement of air masses, decreasing their cover in the polluted areas. Furthermor

Nonacoustic stimulation of the middle ear muscle reflex.

The purpose of these experiments was to determine the incidence of the middle ear reflex in response to several nonacoustic (tactile and air jet) stimuli among subjects with normal hearing who had an acoustic reflex and selected patients with severe hearing loss. The results demonstrate that the incidence of response to tactile stimulation increases as the facial area stimulated approaches the auricle. The response to an air jet stimulus directed toward the eye is high; however, the clinical utility of the air jet may be limited because it often results in a startle reaction and head movement,
