The surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), although consistently positive in the murine local lymph node assay (LLNA) for skin sensitizatio … to cinnamyl alcohol via cinnamyl sulfate is plausible. Sensitization data for several other primary alcohols, including geraniol, farnesol, and possibly hydrocortisone, are also consistent with this mechanism. It seems possible that biosulfation may play a wider role than has previously been recognized in skin sensitization.

In this article, an electrochemical method for the direct synthesis of β-amino alcohols from imines and ketones is described. Mechanistic studies, including a radical trapping experiment, electron paramagnetic resonance, cyclic voltammetry, and divided-cell electrolysis experiment, support the radical-involved reductive cross coupling of imines with ketones at the cathode. The use of abundant and easily prepared starting materials, high atom- and step-economy, and insensitivity to air and moisture make this synthetic strategy more efficient for the construction of various β-amino alcohol deriv…

Biocatalytic production of both enantiomers of optically active alcohols with high enantiopurities is of great interest in industry. Alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs) represent an important class of enzymes that could be used as catalysts to produce optically active alcohols from their corresponding prochiral ketones. This review covers examples of the synthesis of optically active alcohols using ADHs that exhibit anti-Prelog stereopreference. Both wild-type and engineered ADHs that exhibit anti-Prelog stereopreference are highlighted.

The forensic toxicologist is challenged to provide scientific evidence to distinguish the source of ethanol (antemortem ingestion or microbial production) determined in the postmortem blood and to properly interpret the relevant blood alcohol concentration (BAC) results, in regard to ethanol levels at death and subsequent behavioral impairment of the person at the time of death. Higher alcohols (1-propanol, 1-butanol, isobutanol, 2-methyl-1-butanol (isoamyl-alcohol), and 3-methyl-2-butanol (amyl-alcohol)) are among the volatile compounds that are often detected in postmortem specimens and have…

Hybrid CdS/MoS2 with branch and leaf shaped structures are successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method. It is applied to detect volatile organic compounds, a basic source of indoor air pollution with deleterious effects on the human health. The sensor based on CdS/MoS2 displays an outstanding response to alcohols among numerous gases. Their response to 100 ppm ethanol and isopropanol reaches 56 and 94, respectively. Benefiting from the dendrite-like biomimetic structure and synergy effect of CdS and MoS2, the sensor exhibits higher response than traditional gas sensor. For multiple alcohol…

In this report, we developed a photocatalyst-free visible-light-promoted deoxygenative alkylation of imines with alcohols assisted by carbon disulfide and tricyclohexylphosphine. The key to success of this method is the activation of alcohols upon the formation and direct photoexcitation of xanthate anions. This one-pot protocol enables the selective C-O bond homolysis of diverse primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols to react with a variety of N-sulfonyl and N-aryl imines, providing a general and efficient platform for α-branched amine synthesis from alcohols.

Acyclic internal alkenes are a class of challenging substrates in asymmetric Heck-type reactions due to difficulties related to both reactivity and selectivity control. Employing acyclic alkenyl alcohols, an asymmetric Heck-Matsuda reaction is developed through the strategy of chiral anion phase transfer. Various chiral ketones could be obtained in high levels of enantioselectivity. A catalytic amount of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as an additive is crucial for the reaction to suppress the palladium-hydride-mediated side reactions.

Secondary benzylic alcohols and diarylmethanols are common structural motifs of biologically active and medicinally relevant compounds. Here we report their enantioselective synthesis by α-arylation of primary aliphatic and benzylic alcohols under sequential catalysis integrating a Ru-catalyzed hydrogen transfer oxidation and a Ru-catalyzed nucleophilic addition. The method can be applied to various alcohols and aryl nucleophiles tolerating a range of functional groups, including secondary alcohols, ketones, alkenes, esters, NH amides, tertiary amines, aryl halides, and heterocycles.

Stereoselective synthesis of (E)-δ-vinyl-homoallylic alcohols was developed. Starting from α-vinyl allylboronate, Cu-catalyzed allylation of aldehydes or ketones forms secondary or tertiary δ-vinyl-homoallylic alcohols with high E-selectivities. It is proposed that the reaction operates under the Curtin-Hammett principle via the intermediacy of α-vinyl allylic copper species to give the alcohol products with high E-selectivities.

Lignosulfonates are biobased surfactants and specialty chemicals, which are described as water-soluble polyelectrolyte macromolecules that are generated during the sulfite pulping of lignocellulose biomass. Due to their amphiphilic nature, lignosulfonates have made their way into various applications, such as plasticizers, dispersants, and suspension or emulsion stabilizer. The stabilization efficiency for oil-in-water emulsions is affected, among other aspects, by the presence of alcohols. Low-molecular-weight alcohols can improve the performance of lignosulfonates; however, the effects of su…

Liquid chromatographic ligand-exchange chiral stationary phases (CSPs) have been developed for the resolution of racemic compounds, which can be used as bidentate or tridentate ligands. In this paper, we review the development of liquid chromatographic ligand-exchange CSPs based on amino alcohols or their derivatives coated dynamically on octadecylsilica gel or bonded covalently to silica gel and their applications to the resolution of α-amino acids, β-amino acids, α-hydroxycarboxylic acids and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The relationship between the structures of CSPs and chromatographic r…

Relative rates for the silylation of C4-substituted 1-(naphthalen-1-yl)ethanol substrates with tert-butyldimethylsilyl chloride (TBSCl) in CDCl3 catalyzed by 9-azajulolidine (TCAP) have been measured. Hammett plot analysis of the resulting selectivity data yields two intersecting linear correlations. A small positive slope of ρ=+0.09 is observed for donor-substituted alcohols, while silylation rates for acceptor-substituted alcohols correlate best with a slightly larger negative slope (ρ=-0.48). The reaction of methanol with TBSCl catalyzed by 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) has been stud…

Oligosaccharides, one of the most abundant biopolymers, are involved in numerous biological processes. Although many efforts have been put in preparative carbohydrate chemistry, achieving optimal anomeric and regioselectivities remains challenging. Herein we describe an oxidative glycosylation method between anomeric stannanes and oxygen nucleophiles resulting in the formation of a C-O bond with consistently high anomeric control for glycosyl donors bearing a free C2-hydroxyl group. These reactions are promoted by hypervalent iodine reagents with catalytic or stoichiometric amounts of Cu or Zn

Reactions of the simplest Criegee intermediate (CH2OO) with a series of alcohols have been studied in a flash photolysis flow reactor. Laser photolysis of diiodomethane at 355 nm in the presence of molecular oxygen was used to produce CH2OO, and the absolute number densities were determined as a function of delay time from analysis of broadband transient absorption spectra obtained using a pulsed LED. The kinetics for the reactions of CH2OO with methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol were measured under pseudo-first-order conditions at 295 K, yielding rate constants of (1.4 ± 0.4) × 10-13 cm3 s-1, …

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are widely used to disinfect hands to prevent the spread of pathogens including noroviruses. Alcohols inactivate norovirus by destruction of the viral capsid, resulting in the leakage of viral RNA (virolysis). Since conflicting results have been reported on the susceptibility of human noroviruses against alcohols, we exposed a panel of 30 human norovirus strains (14 GI and 16 GII strains) to different concentrations (50%, 70%, 90%) of ethanol and isopropanol and tested the viral RNA titer by RT-qPCR. Viral RNA titers of 10 (71.4%), 14 (100%), 3 (21.4%) and 7 (50%)…

The regioselective conversion of propargylic alcohols into previously unreported α,α-diiodo-β-hydroxyketones was achieved by treatment with N-iodosuccinimide in the presence of a gold catalyst. The corresponding α,α-dichloro-β-hydroxyketones were obtained by treatment with trichloroisocyanuric acid in the absence of a catalyst. The latter reaction can be extended to other alkynols. These transformations can be used to prepare potentially useful halogenated building blocks. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction involves participation of the acetonitrile solvent in the format…

Polyamines are substances involved in many aspects of cell growth, division, and differentiation. Because of the metabolic differences between host cells and parasite cells, polyamine metabolism has been considered as a potential target for the chemotherapy of parasitic diseases. The aim of this work was to evaluate the schistosomicidal activity of different N-alkylated diamines (3a-3h), amino alcohols (4a-4d), and glycosylated amino alcohols (10a-10d). Compounds were prepared by synthetic methods and submitted to in vitro evaluation against adult worms of Schistosoma mansoni. At 100 μM, 3b, 3…

Alcohols instead of aldehydes were used in the Passerini three-component reaction under catalytic aerobic conditions. Mixing alcohols, isocyanides, and carboxylic acids in toluene in the presence of a catalytic amount of cupric chloride, NaNO(2), and TEMPO afforded, under an oxygen atmosphere, the P-3CR adducts in good yields.
