Inverse androgenic alopecia.

A man in his 50s presented to our clinic with obvious progressive hair thinning in the occipital area below the creeping alopecia crown vertex accompanied by the typical Hamilton-Norwood pattern of male androgenetic alopecia (MAGA) hair loss. Based on his clinical features, trichoscopy findings and histological features, as well as his good response to conventional anti-MAGA therapeutic drugs, such as finasteride and minoxidil, a novel isotype of MAGA, named inverse-MAGA, was first identified, and this isotype should be widely evaluated in future studies.

Pediatric Alopecia Areata.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is a non-scarring hair loss disorder of autoimmune etiology. OBJECTIVE: To familiarize physicians with the clinical presentation, diagnosis, evaluation, and management of pediatric alopecia areata. METHODS: The search term "Alopecia areata" was entered into a Pubmed search. A narrow scope was applied to the categories of "epidemiology", "clinical diagnosis", "investigations", "comorbidities", and "treatment". Meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, clinical trials, observational studies, and reviews were included. Only papers published in the English lan…

Bitemporal alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata has various clinical presentations, some of which have recognised prognostic significance. We report five cases of bitemporal alopecia areata, with involvement of the frontal hairline, the therapeutic approach for each case and possible differential diagnoses to also consider.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a patterned primary cicatricial alopecia that was first described in 1994. Once rare, the incidence of FFA has increased dramatically, representing the current most common cause of cicatricial alopecia worldwide. FFA typically begins in postmenopausal women with symmetrical, progressive recession of the frontotemporal hairline together with bilateral loss of the eyebrows. FFA has a distinctive clinical phenotype, which remains a challenge. The histology is identical to lichen planopilaris (LPP), but only a small number of patients have coincidental LPP, usua…

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia, described just over 20 years ago, has become one of the most frequently seen causes of scarring alopecia at many specialist hair clinics. Considered a clinical variant of lichen planopilaris (LPP), it has distinctive features and associations which distinguish it from LPP. Although largely affecting postmenopausal women, a small but increasing number of men and premenopausal women are affected. The spectrum of the disease has expanded from involvement of the frontal hairline and eyebrows, to potentially affecting the entire hairline, facial and body hair. Genetic an…

[Frontal fibrosing alopecia].

Within the group of cicatricial alopecias, Kossard first described frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) in 1994 as a variant of lichen planopilaris (LPP). This classification is based on the histopathological findings of FFA and LPP, which are identical and therefore not separable. The clinical picture of FFA, however, is very characteristic and marked by regionally distinct structures of the skin. Typically, postmenopausal women present with a band-shaped atrophy that is several centimeters wide located in the frontotemporal area. Adjacent to the hairline, perifollicular erythema and papules can …

Interesting Patchy Alopecia.

Patchy alopecias of the scalp are frequently seen in clinical practice. We report a young man who presented with progressive patchy alopecia of the scalp, which was finally diagnosed to be due to tuberculoid leprosy. Progression of alopecia was stopped after anti-leprosy treatment was instituted. Despite high prevalence of leprosy in our country, scalp affection due to leprosy is extremely rare but important to recognize.

Alopecia areata update.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a common nonscarring alopecia. It affects 1.7% of the population at some point in their lives. AA is an autoimmune condition characterized by dense peribulbar lymphocytic infiltrate. The exact cause and triggering factors are still unknown. The scalp is the most commonly affected area but any hair-bearing area can be involved. All available treatment options are neither curative nor preventive. This article will discuss updates in AA with focus on etiopathogenesis, clinical presentation, and treatment options and suggest treatment plans based on the age of the patient a…

Acute alopecia totalis.

From a group of 1,189 AA patients seen in our dermatology unit, thirteen (3 males, 10 females) experienced hair shedding that started profus … g 20% had telogen roots. Histopathological findings and exclamation mark hairs were compatible with alopecia areata. Regrowth of hair was noted 3.2 month after the onset of hair shedding and recovery observed in 4.8 months. All patients were treated by methylprednisolone pulse therapy. During the follow-up period, 53 months on average after recovery, 8 of …

Congenital alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata, the alleged autoimmune process leading to nonscarring hair loss, is not uncommon. It has been classified as an acquired cause of alopecia; however, recently it has been reported in the neonatal period. We report 4 cases of congenital alopecia areata with follow-up from 3 to 5 years. The diagnosis was made clinically in all cases. All patients had prolonged periods of quiescence of hair loss ranging from 6 to 24 months. Treatments used included minoxidil 2% and a range of topical steroids including hydrocortisone 1%, betamethasone valerate 0.05%, fluocinonide 0.05%, and clobeta…

Autoimmunity: alopecia areata.

Strong direct and indirect evidence supports an autoimmune etiology for alopecia areata. T lymphocytes that have been shown to be oligoclonal and autoreactive are predominantly present in the peribulbar inflammatory infiltrate. Alopecia areata frequently occurs in association with other autoimmune diseases, such as thyroiditis and vitiligo, and autoantibodies to follicular components have been detected. Finally, the use of immune modulating drugs, including corticosteroids and contact sensitizers such as dyphencyprone, can be beneficial in the management of this disease. Recent studies have de…

Nurse's cap alopecia.

BACKGROUND: Traction alopecia associated with the nurse's cap is a relatively common form of occupational hair loss. METHODS: We examined 199 healthy South Korean nurses to assess the clinical and pathologic characteristics of traction alopecia caused by prolonged traction exerted at the point of attachment of the nurse's cap. RESULTS: Seven nurses (3.5% of 199) had hair loss at the pin site used to secure the nurse's cap. The lesions were exclusively localized on the parieto-occipital scalp. Histopathologic findings revealed characteristic cicatricial changes which showed a marked decrease …

[Drug induced alopecia].

Hairs are produced in hair follicles that have a cyclic activity. The cycles that normal hair follicles go through are the metabolically active anagen phase, the catagen transitional phase and the resting telogen phase. Loss of more than 120 hairs daily is called alopecia. Drugs typically cause a diffuse, reversible alopecia by influencing one of the cycles that hair follicles go through. Because hair loss can have many causes, a causal relationship between a suspected drug and hair loss may be hard to prove. The principal categories of drugs that may cause alopecia listed in the literature ar…
