Kwashiorkor in North America.

The controversy regarding the relative importance of protein vs energy deficiency in the genesis of kwashiorkor has not been resolved by studies of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) in developing countries. Cases of edematous PEM (n = 29) in North America on the other hand provide clear indications that protein deficiency is an essential prerequisite for the development of kwashiorkor and marasmic kwashiorkor. Energy intakes may vary from low to high and the main source of energy may be carbohydrate or fat. These findings are in keeping with experimental evidence that a low ratio of protein to

Marketing Practices and Nutrition Content of Toddler Milk Across the Americas.

BACKGROUND: Toddler milk is a breastmilk substitute for young children, yet its marketing and nutritional profile across the Americas has not been systematically synthesized. METHODS: We conducted a content analysis documenting the prevalence of front-of-package claims and imagery on 389 toddler milk products from 14 countries in the Americas. We also compared the nutritional profile of toddler milk with plain cow's milk and chocolate-flavored cow's milk. RESULTS: Nearly all products (99%) displayed at least one front-of-package claim. Claim categories included nutrition-related (97%), healt…

A review of reported bushmaster (Lachesis spp.) bites in the Americas.

Envenomations caused by Lachesis species in the Americas are a rare but medically important condition. The genus Lachesis comprises five species distributed throughout Central and South America. Their venoms induce both local and systemic manifestations, although such accidents are rarely reported in the literature. This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of Lachesis envenomations in the Americas through a literature review. A comprehensive search of scientific databases from 1950 to 2023 identified 23 articles reporting 44 confirmed cases of Lachesis envenomation. The accide…

Preparedness for the emerging risk of yellow fever in the Americas.

Yellow fever is a viral zoonosis of variable geographic distribution in the Americas. With no specific treatment for this vector-borne disease, vaccination is the best prevention available. This flavivirus has been circulating in the Americas since the late 15th century, and over the past decades, the virus has reemerged and is now endemic in 13 countries in South and Central America. Ecosystem changes may have had a role in this reemergence. The International Health Regulations were approved by the World Health Assembly in 2005 as a guidance document to support national policies with importan…

Human Babesia odocoilei and Bartonella spp. co-infections in the Americas.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, Babesia and Bartonella species co-infections in patients with chronic, nonspecific illnesses have continued to challenge and change the collective medical understanding of "individual pathogen" vector-borne infectious disease dynamics, pathogenesis and epidemiology. The objective of this case series is to provide additional molecular documentation of Babesia odocoilei infection in humans in the Americas and to emphasize the potential for co-infection with a Bartonella species. METHODS: The development of improved and more sensitive molecular diagnostic techniques,…

Phylogenomics of Leptospira santarosai, a prevalent pathogenic species in the Americas.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a complex zoonotic disease mostly caused by a group of eight pathogenic species (L. interrogans, L. borgpetersenii, L. kirschneri, L. mayottensis, L. noguchii, L. santarosai, L. weilii, L. alexanderi), with a wide spectrum of animal reservoirs and patient outcomes. Leptospira interrogans is considered as the leading causative agent of leptospirosis worldwide and it is the most studied species. However, the genomic features and phylogeography of other Leptospira pathogenic species remain to be determined. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we investigated the gen

Genome Evolution of Invasive Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the Americas.

Staphylococcus aureus causes a variety of debilitating and life-threatening diseases, and thus remains a challenging global health threat. S … resistance genes. We show that the evolution and spread of invasive multidrug-resistant MRSA in the Americas was driven by transcontinental dissemination, followed by more recent establishment and divergence of local pathogen populations. Our study highlights the need for continued international surveillance of high-risk clones to control the global health …

Tracing the Distribution of European Lactase Persistence Genotypes Along the Americas.

In adulthood, the ability to digest lactose, the main sugar present in milk of mammals, is a phenotype (lactase persistence) observed in historically herder populations, mainly Northern Europeans, Eastern Africans, and Middle Eastern nomads. As the -13910∗T allele in the MCM6 gene is the most well-characterized allele responsible for the lactase persistence phenotype, the -13910C > T (rs4988235) polymorphism is commonly evaluated in lactase persistence studies. Lactase non-persistent adults may develop symptoms of lactose intolerance when consuming dairy products. In the Americas, there is no …

Introduction, Spread, and Establishment of West Nile Virus in the Americas.

The introduction of West Nile virus (WNV) to North America in 1999 and its subsequent rapid spread across the Americas demonstrated the potential impact of arboviral introductions to new regions, and this was reinforced by the subsequent introductions of chikungunya and Zika viruses. Extensive studies of host-pathogen-vector-environment interactions over the past two decades have illuminated many aspects of the ecology and evolution of WNV and other arboviruses, including the potential for pathogen adaptation to hosts and vectors, the influence of climate, land use and host immunity on transmi…

Pregnancy Outcomes after ZIKV Infection in French Territories in the Americas.

BACKGROUND: The risk of congenital neurologic defects related to Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has ranged from 6 to 42% in various reports. The aim of this study was to estimate this risk among pregnant women with symptomatic ZIKV infection in French territories in the Americas. METHODS: From March 2016 through November 2016, we enrolled in this prospective cohort study pregnant women with symptomatic ZIKV infection that was confirmed by polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) assay. The analysis included all data collected up to April 27, 2017, the date of the last delivery in the cohort. RESULTS: Am…

Characterization of five unclassified orthobunyaviruses (Bunyaviridae) from Africa and the Americas.

The Bunyaviridae family is made up of a diverse range of viruses, some of which cause disease and are a cause for concern in human and veterinary health. Here, we report the genomic and antigenic characterization of five previously uncharacterized bunyaviruses. Based on their ultrastructure, antigenic relationships and phylogenomic relationships, the five viruses are classified as members of the Orthobunyavirus genus. Three are viruses in the California encephalitis virus serogroup and are related to Trivittatus virus; the two others are most similar to the Mermet virus in the Simbu serogroup,
