Dichorionic Diamniotic Twin Anencephaly and Exencephaly.

We present a rare case of dichorionic diamniotic twin anencephaly and exencephaly discovered in a 35-year-old female at 13.1 weeks of gestation. Anencephaly and exencephaly are neural tube defects (NTD) with devastating consequences caused by the failure of the anterior neural groove closure leading to exencephaly, followed by brain disintegration causing anencephaly. While NTD themselves are common congenital anomalies, their presence in both twins of a dichorionic diamniotic gestation is exceedingly rare and has only been documented in one other instance. The uncertainty surrounding risk fac…

Anencephaly: MRI findings and pathogenetic theories.

We describe the MRI appearances of an anencephalic newborn who survived for 13 h; particularities of this case are male gender and the absence of other associated malformations. Moreover, we discuss the pathogenetic theories of anencephaly, correlating MRI findings with embryological data. An exencephaly-anencephaly sequence due to amnion rupture is hypothesized.

Anomalous costochondral cartilage in fetal anencephaly.

Anencephaly is a human fetal malformation with absence of brain and calvarium superior to the orbits. The consequent absence of hypothalamus provides a unique model for studying human development, and therefore skeletal growth, in the absence of hypothalamic hormones and their regulatory functions. To assess the influence of hypothalamic insufficiency on cartilage development, we studied costochondral cartilage sections from eight anencephalic fetuses (18-22 weeks old) and seven controls (16-22 weeks old) with pathologies not directly related to skeletal growth. We found a previously undescrib…

[Maternal risk factors associated with anencephaly].

INTRODUCTION: Anencephaly has factors of risk genetics, environmental and maternal. OBJECTIVE: Identify maternal factors of risk for anencephaly. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Department of Gyneco-Obstetrics and Pediatrics; second level Social Security Hospital. PARTICIPANTS: 69 pregnant patients attended in their delivery, 23 cases and 46 controls. INTERVENTIONS: We applied a questionnary with questions about factors of risk to each patient with anencephaly children (cases), and to two mothers with healthy children (controls). MEASUREMENTS: The data were analyzed and in boards 2 …

Anencephaly: where do we now stand?

In 1995 the American Medical Association's ethics council issued an opinion calling for the direct procurement of organs from anencephalic n … ans are so precious that no exceptions can be made regarding organ procurement, even in the case of anencephaly. Personalism sees moral worth related to one's potential or actual mental capacities, and because of anencephalic newborns' uniqueness, believes considerable liberties can be taken here. Most bioethicists are themselves in the personalist camp, but …

Scanning electronmicroscopy of experimental anencephaly development.

The scanning electronmicroscope was used to study the development of anencephaly in an experimental model. Anencephaly was produced consistently, using vitamin A as the teratogen. Embryos destined to become anencephalic displayed failure of opposing sides of the rostral neural tube to fuse. Subsequently, the neural folds of the experimental embryos progressively curved laterally away from the midline, whereas the neutral folds of the control embryos fused in the midline by day 12. The anlage of the choroid plexus could be identified on the surface of the everting brain folds as early as gestat…

Distanced perspectives: AIDS, anencephaly, and AHP.

US court decisions guaranteeing life-sustaining care to anencephalic infants have been viewed with disfavor, and sometimes disbelief, by some ethicists who do not believe in the necessity of life-sustaining support for those without cognitive abilities or an independently sustainable future. The distance between these two views--one legal and inclusive, the other medical and specific--seems unbridgeable. This paper reports on a program using multicriterion decision making to define and describe persons in a way which both acknowledges the differences perceived by many as well as those commonal
