Cellular angiofibroma is a benign vascular neoplasm that typically arises in the vulva, perineal, and paratesticular region. Microscopically the lesions exhibit multiple small, non-dilated capillary channels, many of which contain erythrocytes. The endothelial lining cells are prominent, with monomorphic oval nuclei. Interposed among the vessels are both delicate and mature collagen fibers with fibroblastic hypercellularity that is variable in older lesions where sclerosis is prominent. The lesions usually do not recur following simple excision. Recent evidence indicates that cellular angiofib

Angiofibromas are nasopharyngeal tumours mostly seen in adolescent males. They usually present with nasal obstruction and epistaxis. They account for less than 0.5% of all head and neck tumours. Extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas although rare, have been reported (Ali et al., 1982). The most common extranasopharyngeal site is the maxillary sinus. We report a case of extranasopharyngeal angiofibroma arising from the inferior turbinate which had an unusual clinical presentation.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma (JNA) is a fibrovascular tumor of the nasopharynx that classically presents in adolescent males. The reported mean age of onset is between 13 and 22 years old [1-6]. Significant androgen stimulation is hypothesized to explain the strong predisposition for JNA to present in young adolescent males. However, considerable variability in age at diagnosis exists with rare involvement of very young patients incongruent with typical male pubertal growth patterns.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this systematic review is to identify cases of early-onset JNA (

Subglottic stenosis (SGS), the narrowing of the upper trachea, can be an acquired condition in pediatric patients. Presenting with varying degrees of dyspnea and stridor, acquired SGS is most commonly due to intubation. Airway stenosis is often not considered a surgical complication, and no literature on acquired SGS after endoscopic sinus surgery exists. We present a unique case of a 13-year-old male with juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA), who developed SGS in the setting of progressive dyspnea six weeks after endonasal resection of his mass. He required urgent intubation prior to pr

We report the case of a patient with recurrent pterygo-palatal angiofibroma and its treatment. A 21-year-old male patient had a long history of recurrent epistaxis with progressive nasal obstruction. He was diagnosed with an angiofibroma centered in the right pterygo-palatine fossa. Initially, he underwent surgical excision with removal of the entire tumor. The evolution was clinically good with no signs of recurrence on the cervico-facial scan of control (CT). Nine months after, he presented a reappearance of epistaxis. A cervico-facial MRI was performed and showed a recurrence of the tumor p

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a vascular tumor of the nasopharynx that accounts for 0.5% of all cancers of the head and neck. It primarily affects males aged 14-25 years. Of the many genes that mediate the development of JNA, GSTM1 has been most frequently associated with this vascular tumor. The loss of expression of GSTM1 (null genotype) is linked to the development of these tumors. The aim of this cross-sectional case study was to examine the prevalence of the GSTM1-null genotype in Brazilian patients with JNA. DNA was extracted from the leukocytes of blood samples from 10 p

Juvenile angiofibroma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the nasal cavity (LEC NC) all could be found as a hyper-vascular mass in the nasopharynx area. Performing biopsy for histopathologic confirmation is necessary in the case of NPC or LEC NC but could be fatal in the case of angiofibroma. In our case, a 21-year-old male who was suffering from unilateral nasal stuffiness and frequent epistaxis had a mass with an easily bleeding tendency in his right nasal cavity. Juvenile angiofibroma was suspected by clinical and radiologic examinations. We performed preoperat

OBJECTIVES: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare benign tumor that affects young male patients and shows a characteristic development from its origin. It is not a true neoplasm, but shows features of vascular processes, developing into a more fibrous condition. The aim of this study was to correlate the clinical manifestations and the histologic findings of the tumor.
METHODS: Thirty-six patients without previous treatment were studied. We correlated the incidence and duration of the clinical manifestations (nasal obstruction, epistaxis, nasal and/or pharyngeal tumor, and facial def

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1) predisposes affected persons to neoplasms of the parathyroid glands, the endocrine pancreas, the anterior pituitary, and the duodenum. We report the first case of adult-onset multiple angiofibromas of the central face associated with MEN 1. Seven siblings also developed adult-onset angiofibromas, none with evidence of tuberous sclerosis. Basic fibroblast growth factor (BFGF) is elevated in many patients with MEN 1 and may play a pathogenetic role.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare, locally aggressive, highly vascularized benign tumor classically found in males from 13 to 20 years old. The most common clinical presentations are recurrent epistaxis and nasal congestion. Imaging plays a significant role in differentiating and determining the extension of nasopharyngeal lesions. The case below highlights a 15-year-old male that presented with nasal congestion and recurrent epistaxis, who underwent nasal endoscopy and ablation. Persisting symptoms led to further evaluation by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imag

BACKGROUND: Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) describes a uniform malformation syndrome characterized by pre- and postnatal growth restriction (<3rd percentile) and a typical craniofacial gestalt. The basic defect of SRS is currently unknown, and the number of meaningful genetic tests available is therefore limited. Different chromosomal aberrations have been identified, including in the chromosomal region 7p12-p14. Detailed analyses of numerous candidate genes have not revealed any relevant insights with respect to the etiology of the disease. However, maternal uniparental disomy (UPD) of chromoso

OBJECTIVES: To describe a clear and simplified classification system for juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA), and to describe suitable management options.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective medical record review.
METHODS: The clinical and imaging materials of 51 cases of JNA diagnosed at our hospital between 1981 and 2011 were collected and studied. Based on our experiences, we prefer to divide JNAs into three types. Type I includes JNAs fundamentally localized to the nasal cavity, paranasal sinus, nasopharynx, or pterygopalatine fossa. Type II is a JNA extending into the infratemporal fossa
