Newly designed "pieced" stent in a rabbit model of benign esophageal stricture.

AIM: To investigate a newly designed stent and its dilatation effect in a rabbit model of benign esophageal stricture. METHODS: Thirty-four New Zealand white rabbits underwent a corrosive injury in the middle esophagus for esophageal stricture formation. Thirty rabbits with a successful formation of esophageal strictures were randomly allocated into two groups. The control group (n = 15) was implanted with a conventional stent, and the study group (n = 15) was implanted with a detachable "pieced" stent. The study stent (30 mm in length, 10 mm in diameter) was composed of three covered metalli

Avian influenza virus ecology and evolution through a climatic lens.

Avian influenza virus (AIV) is a major health threat to both avian and human populations. The ecology of the virus is driven by numerous factors, including climate and avian migration patterns, yet relatively little is known about these drivers. Long-distance transport of the virus is tied to inter- and intra-continental bird migration, while enhanced viral reassortment is linked to breeding habitats in Beringia shared by migrant species from North America and Asia. Furthermore, water temperature, pH, salinity, and co-existing biota all impact the viability and persistence of the virus in the

Lowland-upland migration of sauropod dinosaurs during the Late Jurassic epoch.

Sauropod dinosaurs were the largest vertebrates ever to walk the Earth, and as mega-herbivores they were important parts of terrestrial ecosystems. In the Late Jurassic-aged Morrison depositional basin of western North America, these animals occupied lowland river-floodplain settings characterized by a seasonally dry climate. Massive herbivores with high nutritional and water needs could periodically experience nutritional and water stress under these conditions, and thus the common occurrence of sauropods in this basin has remained a paradox. Energetic arguments and mammalian analogues have b

Recent advances in neutrophil chemotaxis abnormalities during sepsis.

Sepsis remains one of the leading causes of death globally, in spite of advanced developments in intensive care and better understandings of pathophysiology related to sepsis. There is no special treatment or drug available for sepsis, currently. Under normal circumstances, neutrophil is a major player in acute infection control. However, during sepsis, the migration abilities and antimicrobial functions of neutrophils are impaired, resulting in a dysregulated immune response. Recent studies have indeed demonstrated that blocking or reversing neutrophil migration and impaired antibacterial fun

Gene transfer in utero biologically engineers a patent ductus arteriosus in lambs by arresting fibronectin-dependent neointimal formation.

Closure of the ductus arteriosus requires prenatal formation of intimal cushions, which occlude the vessel lumen at birth. Survival of newborns with severe congenital heart defects, however, depends on ductal patency. We used a gene transfer approach to create a patent ductus arteriosus by targeting the fibronectin-dependent smooth muscle cell migration required for intimal cushion formation. Fetal lamb ductus arteriosus was transfected in utero with hemagglutinating virus of Japan liposomes containing plasmid encoding 'decoy' RNA to sequester the fibronectin mRNA binding protein. Fibronectin

Cellular effects of splenectomy on liver regeneration after 70% resection.

INTRODUCTION: Mammalian liver regeneration is a complex process, the regulation of which involves many mechanisms. The immune system has a pronounced influence on the course of reparative processes in mammals. The hepatic portal vein system provides a direct anatomical connection between the liver and the spleen - the largest lymphoid organ in mammals. Accordingly, the spleen may have a direct effect on liver regeneration as a source of biologically active substances and migrating leukocytes. Specific mechanisms of such influence remain understudied. This study aimed to assess the effect of sp

Long-term survival of human central nervous system progenitor cells transplanted into a rat model of Parkinson's disease.

Progenitor cells were isolated from the developing human central nervous system (CNS), induced to divide using a combination of epidermal growth factor and fibroblast growth factor-2, and then transplanted into the striatum of adult rats with unilateral dopaminergic lesions. Large grafts were found at 2 weeks survival which contained many undifferentiated cells, some of which were migrating into the host striatum. However, by 20 weeks survival, only a thin strip of cells remained at the graft core while a large number of migrating astrocytes labeled with a human-specific antibody could be seen

Storm-induced mass mortality results in both immediate and long-term consequences for a migratory songbird.

Extreme weather events are occurring more often, resulting in increasingly frequent mass mortality events for plants and animals. Identifying why individuals die during these events and their long-term consequences for populations can enable a mechanistic understanding of species' vulnerability to global change. Here we report on early-arriving purple martins (Progne subis)-a migratory songbird-that were killed at >50% of their breeding sites across two US states during a severe winter storm event in 2021. Victims exhibited substantial allelic differences from individuals sampled before and af

The lake sink in Atlantic salmon smolt downstream migration.

The objective was to estimate the movements and survival of Atlantic salmon smolts migrating downstream through a river-lake system consisting of two large, interconnected lakes (areas 58.2 and 13.2 km2, minimum crossing distance 29 and 16 km). Whereas downstream migration in running waters is much studied, limited research in small lakes and reservoirs suggests that smolt survival may be lower when moving through still water. Across two migration seasons, wild and hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon smolts were radio tagged and released in the inflowing river upstream the lake. Tracking of smolt

Silk-mediated queueing migration in Cretaceous mites.

Queueing migration is among the most intriguing forms of collective behaviour in Metazoa, yet its origin and evolution in terrestrial arthropods remain poorly understood because fossil evidence of collective movement is exceedingly rare and largely confined to Palaeozoic marine taxa. Here, we document an exceptional case of queueing migration in larval mites, Protofilum ordinatum gen. et sp. nov. (Trombidiformes: Erythraeidae), preserved in mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber (approx. 100 Ma). This material represents the earliest known evidence of queueing behaviour in terrestrial arthropods and pro

Non-migratory lineages experience higher diversification rates: global evidence from salmonid fishes.

Biologists have long sought to understand the forces driving speciation. Contrasts in dispersal ability (e.g., migration) are hypothesized to influence rates of lineage diversification. However, past inferences of migration-diversification relationships have been contradictory, suggesting the need for further investigation and more nuanced explanations. Here, we test for a relationship between diadromy (marine-freshwater migration) and diversification in salmonids, a dominant group of fishes native across the temperate Northern Hemisphere. We reconstruct a molecular phylogeny comprising 140 sp

Repeated migration informs amino acid nitrogen isotope incorporation in the African elephant Loxodonta africana.

Accurate interpretation of an organism's isotopic composition relies heavily on the assumption of steady state, which is often violated owing to limited appreciation for isotope incorporation. We present amino acid (AA) nitrogen isotope (δ15N) records from the tail hair of an African elephant (Loxodonta africana) that frequently migrated between the Samburu National Wildlife Reserve and Mount Kenya-these regions have drastically different baseline δ15N values of ~ 10‰. We used this baseline isotopic variation to estimate 15N incorporation for 13 AAs. We observe that incorporation in most AAs i

Optimization of swim depth across diverse taxa during horizontal travel.

Semiaquatic taxa, including humans, often swim at the air-water interface where they waste energy generating surface waves. For fully marine animals however, theory predicts the most cost-efficient depth-use pattern for migrating, air-breathing species that do not feed in transit is to travel at around 2 to 3 times the depth of their body diameter, to minimize the vertical distance traveled while avoiding wave drag close to the surface. This has rarely been examined, however, due to depth measurement resolution issues at the surface. Here, we present evidence for the use of this strategy in th

Assigning harvested waterfowl to geographic origin using feather δ2H isoscapes: What is the best analytical approach?

Establishing links between breeding, stopover, and wintering sites for migratory species is important for their effective conservation and management. Isotopic assignment methods used to create these connections rely on the use of predictable, established relationships between the isotopic composition of environmental hydrogen and that of the non-exchangeable hydrogen in animal tissues, often in the form of a calibration equation relating feather (δ2Hf) values derived from known-origin individuals and amount-weighted long-term precipitation (δ2Hp) data. The efficacy of assigning waterfowl to m

A psychiatric drug found in waste-water plant effluents alters the migratory behavior of critically endangered Anguilla anguilla juveniles.

Migratory fishes cross or settle in several environments potentially polluted. Psychiatric drugs, which represent one growing pollution and are found in discharges from waste-water treatment plants, may alter individual behaviors. Here, we assessed behavioral alterations in the upstream migratory behavior of Anguilla anguilla caused by diazepam, an anxiolytic. We monitored the swimming activity, swimming behavior, and boldness to assess whether diazepam impacts them or not. Our 7-day behavioral follow-up allowed us to test the kinetics of the potential effects of diazepam. We found diazepam re

Metabolic constraints and individual variation shape the trade-off between physiological recovery and anti-predator responses in adult sockeye salmon.

Metabolic scope represents the aerobic energy budget available to an organism to perform non-maintenance activities (e.g., escape a predator, recover from a fisheries interaction, compete for a mate). Conflicting energetic requirements can give rise to ecologically relevant metabolic trade-offs when energy budgeting is constrained. The objective of this study was to investigate how aerobic energy is utilized when individual sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) are exposed to multiple acute stressors. To indirectly assess metabolic changes in free-swimming individuals, salmon were implanted with

Control and adaptability of seasonal changes in behavior and physiology of latitudinal avian migrants: Insights from laboratory studies in Palearctic-Indian migratory buntings.

Twice-a-year migrations, one in autumn and the other in spring, occur within a discrete time window with striking alterations in the behavior and physiology, as regulated by the interaction of endogenous rhythms with prevailing photoperiod. These seasonal voyages are not isolated events; rather, they are part of an overall annual itinerary and remain closely coupled to the other annual subcycles, called seasonal life history states (LHSs). The success of migration depends on appropriate timing of the initiation and termination of each LHS, for example, reproduction, molt, summer nonmigratory,

Heterozygous truncating variant of TAOK1 in a boy with periventricular nodular heterotopia: a case report and literature review of TAOK1-related neurodevelopmental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Thousand and one amino-acid kinase 1 (TAOK1) encodes the MAP3K protein kinase TAO1, which has recently been displayed to be essential for neuronal maturation and cortical differentiation during early brain development. Heterozygous variants in TAOK1 have been reported in children with neurodevelopmental disorders, with or without macrocephaly, hypotonia and mild dysmorphic traits. Literature reports lack evidence of neuronal migration disorders in TAOK1 patients, although studies in animal models suggest this possibility. CASE PRESENTATION: We provide a clinical description of a c

Comparison of soft tissue response in rabbits following laryngeal implantation with hydroxylapatite, silicone rubber, and Teflon.

This study evaluates the soft tissue response in rabbits following laryngeal implantation for medialization using hydroxylapatite prostheses, carved silicone rubber prostheses, and injectable Teflon. Sixteen rabbits underwent left recurrent laryngeal nerve section for denervation and laryngeal implantation with hydroxylapatite. At 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, 4 animals were painlessly sacrificed and processed for histology. Similarly, animals were implanted with carved silicone rubber prostheses or with Teflon injected through a flap in the thyroid lamina for comparison at 1, 3, and 6 months. In an

The human skin/chick chorioallantoic membrane model accurately predicts the potency of cosmetic allergens.

The current standard method for predicting contact allergenicity is the murine local lymph node assay (LLNA). Public objection to the use of animals in testing of cosmetics makes the development of a system that does not use sentient animals highly desirable. The chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of the chick egg has been extensively used for the growth of normal and transformed mammalian tissues. The CAM is not innervated, and embryos are sacrificed before the development of pain perception. The aim of this study was to determine whether the sensitization phase of contact dermatitis to known cos
