BACKGROUND: The worldwide increased difficulty to combat gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection in sheep, due to progressing anthelmintic resistance (AR), calls for an enhanced and standardized implementation of early detection of AR. This study provides a snapshot of the current AR status against benzimidazoles and macrocyclic lactones in southern Italy, generated with standardized techniques.

Repeated use of modern anthelmintics gave good control of fascioliasis in sheep in a village in the inter-montane plain of the Yemen Arab Republic despite the presence on the same pasture of untreated animals. The sheep mainly acquired the infection during the drier winter season and it is probable that effective control could be achieved by regular treatment of all animals over that period.

In an experimental patent infection of Ancylostoma ceylanicum in golden hamsters the efficacy of seven anthelmintics was tested; bephenium hydroxynaphthoate, tetramisole, tetrachlorethylene, phenylene 1,4-diisothiocyanate, thiabendazole, parbendazole and mebendazole were studied. Mebendazole was the most effective, with parbendazole, phenylene 1,4-diisothiocyanate, thiabendazole and bephenium hydroxynaphthoate also satisfactory.
