Does COVID-19 infection change appetite and dietary habits?

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been associated with changes in appetite, taste, and dietary behaviors; however, evidence comparing recovered individuals with those never infected remains limited. Understanding these differences is important for developing post-pandemic nutritional strategies. This study compares appetite characteristics and dietary habits between individuals who recovered from COVID-19 and those who were COVID-free. This cross-sectional study was conducted in January 2022 using an online questionnaire that collected sociodemographic data, medical history, appetite mea

Cannabigerol is a novel, well-tolerated appetite stimulant in pre-satiated rats.

RATIONALE: The appetite-stimulating properties of cannabis are well documented and have been predominantly attributed to the hyperphagic activity of the psychoactive phytocannabinoid, ∆(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (∆(9)-THC). However, we have previously shown that a cannabis extract devoid of ∆(9)-THC still stimulates appetite, indicating that other phytocannabinoids also elicit hyperphagia. One possible candidate is the non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid cannabigerol (CBG), which has affinity for several molecular targets with known involvement in the regulation of feeding behaviour. OBJECTIVES:

Time-of-day variation in motivation for everyday behaviors: A cluster-based approach to understanding individual differences.

Motivation governs everyday behavior and is often disrupted in psychiatric conditions, yet how motivation varies within the day, and how these patterns differ between individuals remains unclear. Here, we examined diurnal patterns of momentary subjective motivation for everyday activities, their translation into behavior, and how these patterns vary by trait-based measures linked to motivation. At baseline, 538 participants (424 women, 112 men, 2 non-binary, aged 18-77 years) completed questionnaires indexing psychiatric traits associated with altered motivation, revealing four clusters differ

Erectile Function and Sexual Behavior: A Review of the Role of Nitric Oxide in the Central Nervous System.

Nitric oxide (NO), the neuromodulator/neurotransmitter formed from l-arginine by neuronal, endothelial and inducible NO synthases, is involved in numerous functions across the body, from the control of arterial blood pressure to penile erection, and at central level from energy homeostasis regulation to memory, learning and sexual behavior. The aim of this work is to review earlier studies showing that NO plays a role in erectile function and sexual behavior in the hypothalamus and its paraventricular nucleus and the medial preoptic area, and integrate these findings with those of recent studi

The role of the central nervous system in the psychoneuroendocrine disturbances of anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

It has been well-recognized that starvation in anorexia and bulimia nervosa causes endocrine disturbances. Such disturbances may help understand why many people with eating disorders cannot easily reverse their illness since people with eating disorders often enter a downward spiraling circle with malnutrition sustaining and perpetuating the desire for more weight loss and dieting. Symptoms, such as obsessions and dysphoric mood, and altered appetitive behavior, may be exaggerated by neuropeptide alterations and thus contribute to this downward spiral. While neuropeptide disturbances do not ap…

"Sex, drugs and the brain": the interaction between drugs of abuse and sexual behavior in the female rat.

Preclinical and clinical research investigating female sexual motivation has lagged behind research on male sexual function. The present review summarizes recent advances in our understanding of the specific roles of various brain areas, as well as our understanding of the role of dopaminergic neurotransmission in sexual motivation of the female rat. A number of behavioral paradigms that can be used to thoroughly evaluate sexual behavior in the female rat are first discussed. Although traditional assessment of the reflexive, lordosis posture has been useful in understanding the neuroanatomical

A Fly's Eye View of Natural and Drug Reward.

Animals encounter multiple stimuli each day. Some of these stimuli are innately appetitive or aversive, while others are assigned valence based on experience. Drugs like ethanol can elicit aversion in the short term and attraction in the long term. The reward system encodes the predictive value for different stimuli, mediating anticipation for attractive or punishing stimuli and driving animal behavior to approach or avoid conditioned stimuli. The neurochemistry and neurocircuitry of the reward system is partly evolutionarily conserved. In both vertebrates and invertebrates, including Drosophi

Enhanced conditioning and disrupted extinction processes in men struggling with compulsive sexual behaviors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite a previously reported connection between compulsive sexual behaviors (CSB), such as problematic pornography use, and heightened cue-reactivity, empirical evidence of the alteration of processes responsible for increased salience attribution to erotic cues remains sparse. Drawing on similarities with addiction models, this study explores the neuronal mechanisms of CSB through the use of appetitive conditioning and extinction with erotic and monetary rewards. METHODS: Thirty-two heterosexual males struggling with CSB (age: 28.9 ± 7.1), and 31 healthy matched partici

The effects of chronic administration of testosterone propionate with or without estradiol on the sexual behavior and plasma steroid levels of aged female rats.

Low sexual desire concomitant with feelings of distress is reported in naturally and surgically menopausal women. A combination of estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) restores sexual desire and interest in these women. The central mechanisms by which E2 and T act to restore desire are poorly understood. Here we examined the effect of chronic treatment with testosterone propionate (TP) administered by a sc SILASTIC brand capsule in aged ovary-intact female rats. Females were first treated with TP alone, followed by a second phase when TP was administered in combination with estradiol benzoate (

Early infant appetitive traits are associated with growth status and adiposity in African-American infants and toddlers.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined infant appetitive traits in minority populations or among mothers with obesity. AIM: To test associations of appetitive traits with nutritional exposures and growth in African-American children up to age 24m. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Mothers with pre-pregnancy BMI <25 or ≥30 and their infants were included (n = 222). The Baby Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (BEBQ) at 3m captured appetitive traits; BMI z-scores (BMIZ) at 3, 12 and 24m were examined. Internal consistency of BEBQ constructs was tested and their association with growth outcomes evaluated using c

Dawn of the dread: threatening cinematic virtual reality environments enhance general but not specific pavlovian-instrumental transfer.

INTRODUCTION: Pavlovian-Instrumental Transfer (PIT) exemplifies how Pavlovian-motivational influences modulate goal-directed behavior, yielding outcome-specific (specific PIT) and general (general PIT) transfer. General PIT is commonly interpreted as outcome-general invigoration and is sensitive to stress. However, human PIT research typically uses visual, appetitive procedures, whereas rodent PIT research often uses auditory cues, limiting translation. We tested whether cue modality, along with additional factors such as immersive threat contexts, modulates PIT, and whether virtual reality (V

Appetitive responses toward smoking-related stimuli in abstinence-motivated, non-deprived individuals with chronic tobacco dependence: A multi-methodological investigation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Appetitive responses, such as approach biases, are thought to play a crucial role in smoking. This study aimed to compare responses toward smoking-related stimuli with responses in control conditions (e.g. non-approach or neutral stimuli) using a multi-method approach. By examining associations between response measures and with smoking-related variables, the study sought to extend understanding of their role in abstinence-motivated, non-deprived individuals with chronic tobacco dependence. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study conducted at a university laboratory and

Orexin 1 and 2 Receptors in the Prelimbic Cortex Modulate Threat Valuation.

The ability to distinguish between threatening (repulsors), neutral and appetitive stimuli (attractors) stimuli is essential for survival. The orexinergic neurons of hypothalamus send projections to the limbic structures, such as different subregions of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), suggesting that the orexinergic mechanism in the prelimbic cortex (PL) is involved in the processing of fear and anxiety. We investigated the role of orexin receptors type 1 (OX1R) and type 2 (OX2R) in the PL in such processes upon confrontation with an erratically moving robo-beetle in mice. The selective b

Studying alcohol use disorder using Drosophila melanogaster in the era of 'Big Data'.

Our understanding of the networks of genes and protein functions involved in Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) remains incomplete, as do the mechanisms by which these networks lead to AUD phenotypes. The fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) is an efficient model for functional and mechanistic characterization of the genes involved in alcohol behavior. The fly offers many advantages as a model organism for investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms of alcohol-related behaviors, and for understanding the underlying neural circuitry driving behaviors, such as locomotor stimulation, sedation, tol

Selective facilitation of sexual solicitation in the female rat by a melanocortin receptor agonist.

Disorders of sexual desire affect an estimated 30% of women in North America and Europe, with etiologies based on interpersonal, personal, and physiological factors. There are currently no pharmacological agents approved for use in the treatment of female sexual dysfunction. This is due, in part, to a focus on the effects of experimental drugs on reflexive components of sexual behavior, such as lordosis, in animal models. Here we report that PT-141, a peptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone that binds to central melanocortin receptors, selectively stimulates solicitational beh

Sodium appetite in response to sodium deficiency in baboons.

Naive male baboons exhibit little hedonic intake of 300 mM NaCl but develop a robust Na appetite with Na deficiency. With the first episode of Na deficiency, increased drinking of saline solution occurs in the first 1-3 days, but correction of deficit is slow over 5-6 days. Na intake and repair of deficit become more rapid with experience. After three episodes of Na deficiency, the baboons immediately drink Na solution when given access and repair the deficit over 1-2 days. These experimental data showing an innate Na appetite in primates are important in relation to behavior of gorillas and c

Increasing 3alpha,5alpha-THP following inhibition of neurosteroid biosynthesis in the ventral tegmental area reinstates anti-anxiety, social, and sexual behavior of naturally receptive rats.

The progesterone metabolite and neurosteroid, 5alpha-pregnan-3alpha-ol-20-one (3alpha,5alpha-THP), has actions in the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA) to modulate lordosis, but its effects on other reproductively relevant behaviors are not well understood. Effects on exploration, anxiety, and social behavior resulting from inhibition of 3alpha,5alpha-THP formation, as well as 3alpha,5alpha-THP enhancement, were investigated in the midbrain VTA. Naturally sexually receptive, female rats (n=8-10/group) received infusions aimed at the midbrain VTA of vehicle, PK11195 (an inhibitor of neurost

CCK-58 prolongs the intermeal interval, whereas CCK-8 reduces this interval: not all forms of cholecystokinin have equal bioactivity.

It has been accepted for decades that "all forms of cholecystokinin (CCK) have equal bioactivity," despite accumulating evidence to the contrary. To challenge this concept, we compared two feeding responses, meal size (MS, 10% sucrose) and intermeal interval (IMI), in response to CCK-58, which is the major endocrine form of CCK, and CCK-8, which is the most abundantly utilized form. Doses (0, 0.1, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 3 and 5 nmol/kg) were administered intraperitoneally over a 210-min test to Sprague Dawley rats that had been food-deprived overnight. We found that (1) all doses of CCK-58, except the
