This study aimed to verify the existence of a double aphasia/apraxia dissociation. Apraxic patients without aphasia and aphasic patients without apraxia were included in a consecutive series of patients with cortical or subcortical CT documented vascular lesions in the left hemisphere. Of 699 patients, 10 were found to be apraxic but not aphasic and 149 aphasic but not apraxic. These findings indicate an aphasia/apraxia double dissociation. This suggests that praxis and language make use of two different, partly overlapping networks.

AIM: To assess the reliability and validity of the Van Heugten test for apraxia (VHA), developed for and used in stroke patients, in a memory clinic population. Furthermore, we assess the presence and severity of apraxia in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and investigate which AD patients are likely to develop apraxia.
METHODS: We included 90 controls (age: 60 ± 9 years, MMSE: 28 ± 2), 90 MCI patients (age: 65 ± 7 years, MMSE: 26 ± 2) and 158 AD patients (age: 66 ± 8 years, MMSE: 20 ± 5). Apraxia was evaluated by the VHA assessing ideational and ideomotor praxis.

We identified a syndrome characterized by a relatively isolated progressive impairment of reading words that the patient was able to understand and repeat but without other components of speech apraxia. This cluster of symptoms fits a new syndrome designated Progressive Verbal Apraxia of Reading. A right-handed man (AB) came with a 2.5-year history of increasing difficulties in reading aloud. He was evaluated twice, 2 years apart, using multimodal neuroimaging techniques and quantitative neurolinguistic assessment. In the laboratory, reading difficulties arose in the context of intact visual a
