Aseptic arthritis can occur following intestinal infections due to Shigella, Salmonella, Campylobacter jejuni and Clostridium difficile. These rheumatisms are rare, only occurring in about 1 p. cent of cases, generally in patients with the HLA-B27 antigen. Whatever the causative organism, the arthritis has features in common with all reactive arthrites. They generally have a favourable course.

The prevalence of mouse liver reactive antinuclear factors (L-ANF) and human granulocyte reactive antinuclear factors (G-ANF) was determined in sera from 34 age- and sex-matched pairs of patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and controls. Neither type of antinuclear factor was found in any of the control sera, whereas of the patient sera, 35% were L-ANF positive and 59% were G-ANF positive. 90% of the G-ANF positive sera were of the IgG class and 50% were able to fix complement. L-ANF was most frequent in female patients. Several types of ANF were associated with the polyarticular

Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and poststreptococcal reactive arthritis (PSRA) represent two distinct but related poststreptococcal conditions, both arising from an autoimmune response following Group A streptococcal (GAS) infection, typically pharyngitis. Although both illnesses have a shared trigger, their clinical presentations and long-term consequences differ markedly. ARF, a systemic inflammatory disorder, can impact several organs, particularly the heart, potentially resulting in chronic rheumatic heart disease with irreversible valve damage. The cornerstone of ARF treatment includes Strep

Reactive arthritis is included in the spectrum of seronegative spondyloarthritides, occurring secondary to triggers of genitourinary and gastrointestinal tract infections. We describe two cases of sexually acquired reactive arthritis secondary to genital infection by Chlamydia trachomatis, diagnosed by in-house polymerase chain reaction performed on the first void urine. Both patients were managed with a combined approach of short course antibiotics, immunosuppressive agents, biologicals and surgical intervention.

Reactive arthritis, previously known as Reiter's Syndrome or Disease was a post-dysenteric, asymmetrical acute large joint polyarthritis, with fever, conjunctivitis, iritis, purulent urethral discharge, rash and penile soft tissue swelling. Although the eponym was given to Hans Reiter, various forms of the condition have been recorded in history a few hundred years before Reiter. Two French doctors, Noel Fiessinger (1881-1946) and Edgar Leroy (d. 1965), presented a paper at la Societe des Hopitaux-in Paris on the 8th December 1916 on dysentery in 80 soldiers on the Somme, and four of whom deve

A 35-year-old man presented with polyarthritis and constitutional symptoms, and a recent history of multiple tick bites and skin rash on trekking holiday. He did not respond to oral doxycycline and cephalexine for presumed Lyme's disease. Further investigation confirmed strongly positive streptococcal serology. There was absence of clinical or echocardiography evidence of heart involvement and immunological screening for inflammatory arthritis was negative. In the absence of other major Jones criteria for acute rheumatic fever, besides polyarthritis and the serological evidence of a recent str

The intravesical instilation of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is a widely used and efficacious procedure for treatment of intermediate to high-grade superficial bladder cancer. The occurrence of osteoarticular side effects is infrequent compared to the number of administrated doses, and reactive arthritis is included within these effects. We present the case of a 54 years old HLA-27 (+) male, who developed reactive arthritis featuring asymmetric olygoarthritis and dactylitis after the second intravesical BCG instillation, which was resolved with administration of Etoricoxib and Isoniazid.

Reactive arthritis is an inflammatory condition with multiorgan system disease potential. Because the standard constellation of symptoms in Reiter syndrome (arthritis, conjunctivitis, and urethritis) is not typically present in all patients, the disease can be easily overlooked if clinical suspicion is not high upon presentation. To highlight the importance of recognizing the potential of this disease in patients with a history of either gastrointestinal or genitourinary illnesses, we present the case of a young healthy male presented on multiple occasions later diagnosed with Reiter syndrome

Reactive arthritis belongs to the group of arthritidies known as the spondyloarthritides. There are two main types of reactive arthritis: post-venereal and post-enteric. Chlamydia trachomatis is felt to be the most common cause of reactive arthritis, in general. Until recently, even the terminology for the condition itself was unclear as multiple eponyms and names have been associated with reactive arthritis. In recent years, a great deal has been learnt about the epidemiology, pathophysiology and treatment of reactive arthritis and Chlamydia-induced reactive arthritis, specifically. Prospecti

PURPOSE: To report a case with reactive arthritis (ReA) following Streptococcus viridans genitourinary infection.
METHODS: Case report.
DESIGN: Clinical findings and treatment are presented. The 28-year-old man visited the authors' hospital due to ciliary injection and hypopyon over left eye. On examination, Behcet-mimicking symptoms were observed, such as genital and oral ulcers and arthritis. Furthermore, S. viridans was found in the urethral discharge culture. Under the impression of ReA, which was triggered by S. viridans, NSAID and antibiotics were prescribed. Complete resolution of ocu

We report a case of a 49-year-old patient who developed poststaphylococcal coagulase negative reactive arthritis. The woman presented with constitutional symptoms, arthritis, urinary infection and conjunctivitis. The blood culture was positive for the staphylococcal coagulase negative infection. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein were elevated, whereas the rheumatoid factor was negative. Radiographic findings confirmed diagnosis of pleuropneumonia, and one year later of chronic asymmetric sacroileitis. Physicians should be aware of possible reactive arthritis after staphyloc

An ongoing outbreak of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) L2b proctitis, predominantly in HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM), has been reported in industrialised countries. A case of reactive arthritis after L2b proctitis is described. This case expands the spectrum of severe complications related to LGV L2b proctitis. Since this infection may be asymptomatic, this organism should be screened for in HIV-positive MSM with symptoms consistent with reactive arthritis.

Reactive arthritis ReA is still an incompletely understood rheumatic disorder whose immunopathogeny involves several mechanisms. There is an association with Class-I histocompatibility antigens HLA-B27 and history of previous gastrointestinal or genitourinary infections. The molecular mimicry between bacterial and self antigens suggests the possibility of cross reactivity as a disease mechanism. The infection pandemics by the human immunodeficiency virus HIV changed the profile of the occurrence of a number of rheumatic diseases including ReA which appears to be more frequent more severe and r

Reactive arthritis (ReA) is defined as a joint inflammation triggered by a distant infection, with no cultivable microbes in the joints. Although efforts have been made to characterize the microorganism linked to ReA, no definite common feature has so far emerged. Here we present a case of ReA which occurred after a zoophilic (canine genus) sexual intercourse.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical, radiological, and diagnostic features of reactive arthritis (ReA) in indigenous Black Zambians with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
METHODS: Consecutive patients attending an arthritis clinic over a 5-year period were studied prospectively. Those who satisfied diagnostic criteria for ReA were analyzed.
RESULTS: In total, 170 patients satisfied the ESSG criteria for ReA; 71 (45 men, 26 women) had one or more extraarticular manifestations; 30% had enteroreactive and 14% uroreactive disease. Only 59% of patients had the diagnostic features

In adults, reactive arthritis (ReA) following Clostridium difficile-enterocolitis has been documented. In children, only one case of C. difficile-associated ReA has been reported. We now describe two other cases of ReA associated with C. difficile in children. The characteristics of ReA due to C. difficile appear to be similar in adults and children. Both children show polyarthritis after an episode of diarrhoea with positive stool cultures for C. difficile. Arthritis is asymmetrical with a self-limiting course. Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) therapy is sufficient. One case is rema
