BACKGROUND: Neo-aortic root dilatation accounts for the majority of reoperations needed after the Ross procedure with implantation of the pulmonary autograft as complete root replacement. This study evaluates early results of external prosthetic reinforcement of the autograft.
METHODS: From July 2015 to October 2017, 16 adolescent and adult patients received a Ross procedure at our department by this technique. A congenital-dysplastic valve was present in 13 patients, including 9 patients with a bicuspid aortic valve. Clinical and echocardiographic follow-up is complete with a mean duration o

Osteochondral autograft transplantation is a well-established technique in the treatment of chondral and osteochondral defects. Cylindrical osteochondral plugs are harvested from areas of the articular surface with a lesser weight-bearing role and transferred to areas of osteochondral damage. Using a press-fit technique, the plugs are inserted to replace damaged or missing articular cartilage and to supply the chondral lesion with islands of viable and immediately functional hyaline cartilage. The presence of focal unipolar cartilage defects in the knee measuring 1 to 4 cm2 is a current indica

BACKGROUND: Corneal perforation secondary to exteriorization of the haptic foot of the anterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) is a rare complication in IOL surgery.
CASE REPORT: A superior penetrating corneal defect developed in the right eye of a 74-year-old woman associated with exteriorization of the superior haptic of an anterior chamber IOL.
METHODS: We describe the technique of repositioning and successful patching of the defect using a lamellar cornea-sclera rotational autograft.
CONCLUSIONS: This technique is useful for small perforations when cornea donor tissue is not available.

A series of 42 consecutive patients with exclusively aortic root replacement using the pulmonary autograft is presented. The mean age at operation was 19.3 years (range 0.3-41.4). Two patients died in hospital (4.8%; 70% CL: 0.0-8.2). This mortality was not related to the autograft procedure. The mean follow-up time was 30 months (range 3-70; SD: 20). Late mortality consisted of two patients; in one of these severe autograft failure occurred due to chronic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The estimated survival rate at 4 years was 88.8% (70% CL: 83.3-94.5). Morbidity involved three patients. One

Tracheal reconstruction continues to be a challenge in head and neck surgery. Numerous techniques, including the use of alloplasts, composite grafts, and staged laryngotracheal troughs, have met with limited success because of implant exposure, infection, persistent granulation tissue, and eventual restenosis. With recently introduced techniques for soft-tissue molding, bone induction with bone morphogenetic protein, and microvascular free tissue transfer, a rodent model was developed to create a well-vascularized tracheal autograft. In this model, a rigid tube having the same dimensions and f

While largely successful, the use of a conjunctival autograft in the exposed scleral bed following a pterygium excision can result in postoperative complications. We report two cases of a previously undescribed complication: subconjunctival fibrosis at the harvest site of the graft. In one case, the fibrosis caused an asymptomatic, purely cosmetic defect; however, in the other case, the scar tissue constricted the extraocular movement with resultant diplopia. We call attention to this complication as it can affect visual function; we discuss its management and prevention.

Since about 15 years intensive chemotherapy followed by autologous bone marrow transplantation has been used on the basis of "dose-response" principle to treat certain children with tumours of sombre prognosis. At present, the main indications for this method are metastatif neuroblastoma in less than one-year old children, non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphomas in partial remission or relapse, refractory or recurrent Hodgkin's disease and some peculiar forms of Wilms' tumour. In other tumours, such as rhabdomyosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma or brain tumours, the indications have not yet been clearly dete

The complications and swallowing functions were studied in eleven patients who had undergone free jejunal autograft reconstruction after total pharyngolaryngectomy and cervical esophagotomy. All patients have had advanced cancers of the hypopharynx or cervical esophagus. Fistula was complicated in three patients (27%), including one (9%) who died of pneumonia. Death or graft necrosis was not complicated in perioperative period. There was no patient with stenosis. Radiation necrosis of the graft and skin occurred six months after post-operative 60 Gy irradiation in one patient. Ten patients of

A corneal perforation developed in the right eye of a 46-year-old man after removal of a corneal foreign body. Two attempts to seal the perforation with cyanoacrylate glue failed. The patient subsequently underwent lamellar corneal autograft, which successfully closed the perforation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of repairing a corneal perforation with lamellar corneal autograft.

This study compared sutureless and glue-free conjunctival autograft (SGC) with sutured conjunctival autograft (control) in pterygium surgery in terms of key outcome measures, including recurrence rate, complication rate, and surgical duration, to evaluate the efficacy and safety of SGC. A comprehensive search of five databases (PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, and China Science and Technology Journal Database) was conducted to identify relevant studies. Dichotomous outcomes were analyzed using relative risk (RR), and continuous outcomes were analyz

Limited magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data on autograft dilatation following the Ross procedure in congenital cohorts presents challenges in understanding its evolution and impact on clinical outcomes. This study, spanning from February 2003 to December 2022, included patients under 40 years at the time of the Ross procedure, with MRI follow-ups assessing dimensions at key aortic sites. Among 307 patients, 132 MRIs were analyzed from 76 individuals, revealing that autograft z-scores increase primarily with time post-procedure (Coef. 0.13; 95% CI:0.051-0.216; P = 0.002). Additionally, older
