Low pressure voiding induced by stimulation and 1 kHz post-stimulation block of the pudendal nerves in cats.

The goal of this study is to induce low-pressure voiding by stimulation and bilateral 1 kHz post-stimulation block of the pudendal nerves. In anesthetized cats, wire hook electrodes were placed on the left and/or right pudendal nerves. Stimulus pulses (30 Hz, 0.2 ms) were applied to one pudendal nerve to induce a reflex bladder contraction and to produce contractions of the external urethral sphincter (EUS). High frequency (1 kHz) biphasic stimulation was applied to block axonal conduction in both pudendal nerves and block EUS activity. In 4 cats, a catheter was inserted into the distal urethr

Temporary trigeminal disorder as a result of pneumocephalus after subarachnoid block.

A patient was scheduled for inguinal herniorrhaphy under subarachnoid block. Lumbar puncture was difficult and several attempts were needed before it could be achieved. During the immediate postoperative period, the patient developed paraesthesia and anaesthesia on the right side of the face, mostly in the nose, cheek and upper lip areas. A CT scan showed a small pneumocephalus at the level of the brainstem. The symptoms persisted for approximately 70 min, after which they disappeared.

Diagnosis and management of a giant retroperitoneal hematoma compressing the femoral nerve, following an ultrasound-guided lumbar sympathetic block: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The lumbar sympathetic nerve block stands as a pivotal approach in managing complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) in the lower limbs. Retroperitoneal hemorrhage is an extremely rare and severe complication of lumbar sympathetic nerve block. Here, we report for the first time a case of retroperitoneal hemorrhage that initially presented with symptoms of femoral nerve compression. CASE PRESENTATION: An 81-year-old elderly female was diagnosed with CRPS. After undergoing an ultrasound-guided lumbar sympathetic nerve block at our hospital, discomfort in her right lower back was experi

Whiplash injury-induced atypical short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache with conjunctival injection and tearing syndrome treated by greater occipital nerve block.

BACKGROUND: Short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT) syndrome is a rare type of trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia. SUNCT syndrome is typically idiopathic, and secondary SUNCT syndrome after indirect injury is very rare. We report a case of SUNCT syndrome manifested dramatically after a whiplash injury and treated by greater occipital nerve (GON) block. CASE: A 62-year-old woman presented with headache associated with ipsilateral orbitofacial pain, lacrimination, and conjunctival injection after a car accident. Imaging study revealed no acut

Complex regional pain syndrome secondary to leprosy.

INTRODUCTION: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae affecting the skin and the nerves. Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS/Sudeck's dystrophy) is a painful and disabling condition--a triad of autonomic, sensory, and motor symptoms disproportionate to the inciting event (inflammatory, infective, or traumatic nerve damage). CASE: A 20-year-old male presented with continuous pain, aggravated by cold and emotions, loss of fine touch and temperature sensation, redness, swelling, along lateral aspect of left hand and forearm with weakness in the grip of 6 months' d

Closed-loop bioelectronic block of stellate ganglia reduces neurotransmitter release and improves recovery following programmed ventricular pacing.

INTRODUCTION: The autonomic nervous system governs cardiac function through a finely-balanced interplay of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity. Following myocardial infarction chronic sympathetic hyperactivation destabilizes this balance, increases arrhythmia formation, and exacerbates cardiac dysfunction. Current treatments such as pharmaceuticals, surgical sympathectomies, and ablations, are either systemic, irreversible, or non-titratable, underscoring the need for targeted, adaptive interventions. METHODS: Here we show that a closed-loop fuzzy logic controller, using real-time norepi

Neuromodulation of the Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System for Arrhythmia Treatment.

This review explores current and emerging neuromodulation techniques targeting the cardiac autonomic nervous system for the treatment and prevention of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. Arrhythmias remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, with the autonomic nervous system playing a crucial role in arrhythmogenesis. Interventions span surgical, pharmacological, and bioelectronic methods. We discuss the range of neuromodulation methods targeting the stellate ganglion, the spinal region, the parasympathetic system, and other promising methods. These include stellate ganglion block

Neural regulation of insulin secretion in the dog.

The effects of stimulation of the mixed autonomic nerve to the dog pancreas has been studied under conditions in which both pancreaticoduodenal vein blood flow and insulin concentration were determined. Stimulation resulted in increased insulin output, which was blocked by prior administration of atropine. Blood flow was reduced by stimulation in proportion to the rate of stimulation. At 40 stimuli/s a maximum effect was found at 1 min with a gradual return toward base line despite continued application of the stimulus. Atropinization had no effect on blood flow changes. Insulin responses to 0

Use of Stellate Ganglion Block in the Treatment of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome: A Novel Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a debilitating chronic condition characterized by an excessive increase in heart rate when transitioning from a lying or sitting position to standing. It impacts millions of people globally and is linked to a wide range of subsequent symptoms. CASE REPORT: This case report describes the novel use of stellate ganglion block (SGB) in a 41-year-old woman with a 15-year history of debilitating POTS symptoms. Given the failure of conservative management, the clinical team pursued a left SGB. Nine weeks postprocedure, the patient repor

Optimizing clinical outcomes with stellate ganglion block and trauma-informed care: A review article.

BACKGROUND: For decades, thousands of active-duty service members have sought treatment for trauma exposure. Stellate ganglion block (SGB) is a fast-acting nerve block documented in medical literature for nearly a century that has shown promise as a potentially life-altering treatment for post-traumatic stress (PTS). OBJECTIVE: This review aims to answer the practical questions of those who support individuals suffering from trauma: (1) SGB's safety profile (2) efficacy data (3) potential advantages and limitations, (4) a cross-cultural application example, (5) and the use of SGB in combinati

Efficacy of stellate ganglion block in treatment of electrical storm: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Electrical storm (ES) is a life-threatening condition of recurrent ventricular arrhythmias (VA) in a short period of time. Percutaneous stellate ganglion blockade (SGB) is frequently used - however the efficacy is undefined. The objective of our systematic review was to determine the efficacy of SGB in reducing VA events and mortality among patients with ES. A search of Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, CINAHL and CENTRAL was performed on February 29, 2024 to include studies with adult patients (≥ 18 years) with ES treated with SGB. Our outcomes of interest were VA burden pre- and post-SGB, and in-hosp

Stellate ganglion block as rescue therapy in drug-resistant electrical storm.

Electrical storm or incessant ventricular tachycardia is a life-threatening condition and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Often patients respond to traditional anti-arrhythmia treatment. However, some patients are resistant to the drug therapy and thus, pose huge challenges in effective management. Though stellate ganglion block has been found to be effective in treating patients with electrical storm, it is still under-utilized. In this case report, we successfully managed to revert the drug-resistant arrhythmia to sinus rhythm after ultrasound-guided stellate ganglion block.

Autonomic Dysreflexia After Hip Fractures Managed by Regional Anesthesia: A Case Report.

Autonomic dysreflexia occurs after a spinal cord injury usually at the level of T6 or above, and its hallmark feature is exaggerated autonomic response to noxious stimuli resulting in uncontrolled hypertensive episodes with reflexive bradycardia that can be fatal if not controlled. We present a case highlighting regional anesthetic techniques, including peripheral nerve blocks, to ameliorate the symptoms of autonomic dysreflexia triggered by hip fractures in a 57-year-old woman with an old C5-C6 spinal cord injury before definitive hip surgery. The regional techniques described provide anesthe

BOTULISM. STUDIES ON THE MANNER IN WHICH THE TOXIN OF CLOSTRIDIUM BOTULINUM ACTS UPON THE BODY : I. THE EFFECT UPON THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM.

A survey of the results of these experiments shows, we believe conclusively, that in botulinus intoxication in cats, dogs, and rabbits there is a specific effect upon the portions of the autonomic nervous system which Gaskell (14) described as the bulbosacral and prosomatic outflows of connector fibers respectively, which results in a blocking of the nerve impulses of these nerves. The experimental as well as the clinical evidence indicates that there is no damage to the nerves of the thoracicolumbar outflow. The exact location of the damage has not been ascertained nor has the mechanism by wh
