OBJECTIVE: Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) via the right axillary artery (RAA) has become an alternative perfusion strategy, especially in complex aortic procedures. This study delineates our technique and outcome with direct axillary cannulation utilizing the Seldinger technique, which we adopted as the standard perfusion strategy in the sternum-sparing minimally invasive total coronary revascularization via left anterior thoracotomy (TCRAT) using CPB.
METHODS: From November 2019 to December 2023, a total of 413 consecutive patients underwent nonemergent isolated coronary artery bypass grafting…

A rare variation of the ulnar artery is presented on routine anatomical dissection in one male cadaver. The superficial ulnar artery was found to originate from the axillary artery. The free forearm flap is increasingly popular among plastic surgeons. As a result of this case, and a review of the literature to gain further knowledge of anatomical variations, it is advised that more attention should be paid clinically to this artery to prevent its injury.

BACKGROUND: Arterial trauma of the axillary subclavian segment carries considerable morbidity and mortality risks. Surgical approaches are c … but 3 patients (90.6%) suffered subclavian artery injury (right 48.3%, left 51.7%), while 12.9% had axillary artery injury (one patient with both vessels affected). Intraoperative complications happened in one patient (3.1%, 95% CI: 0.2-18%). Pseudoaneurysms were identified in 11 patients (34.4%), thrombosis in 6 (18.8%), and dissection in 6 (18.8%). Three (9.4%) …

INTRODUCTION: Injury to the subclavian and axillary arteries is uncommon. Standard surgical techniques require wide exposure and dissection in traumatised areas which is often challenging and associated with significant morbidity, and mortality ranges from 5 to 30%. We report our experience with the endovascular treatment of these injuries.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied patients with blunt or penetrating (including iatrogenic) injuries to the subclavian or axillary artery between January 2000 and September 2004. Demographic data, mechanism of injury, concomitant injuries, angiographic f…

BACKGROUND: The axillary artery is our preferred arterial cannulation site when the ascending aorta cannot be cannulated. Previously, we cannulated the artery directly; now we use a side graft. The purposes of this study were to (1) investigate cannulation-related morbidity and (2) determine whether use of a side graft reduces it.
METHODS: From January 1993 to January 2001, 392 patients underwent 399 axillary artery cannulations. Indications included calcified ascending aorta (129, 32%), ascending aortic aneurysm (115, 29%), type I aortic dissection (85, 21%), cardiac reoperation (70, 18%), a…

The rarity of bullet emboli leads to frequent delays in diagnosis and inadequate early management. A case report of a bullet entering the right ventricle and embolization to the right axillary artery is presented. Our recent experience with this entity is described, and 160 cases reported in the English literature are reviewed and summarized.

AIM: The axillary artery is currently gaining interest as an alternative to femoral artery cannulation in aortic surgery. It was the aim of our study to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of axillary artery cannulation in a series of patients undergoing surgery of the ascending aorta and/or the aortic arch.
METHODS: From 1998 to 2002 cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) perfusion via the axillary artery was intended in 35 patients (28 male), median age 61 (22-77) years. The underlying disease was acute aortic dissection type A in 22/35 (63%), chronic aortic dissection type A in 2/35 (6%),…

Rupture of the circumflex artery and nerve, without fracture or dislocation, is a rare traumatic event. Such a case is reported in a champion flat jockey who sustained blunt trauma to the shoulder after a fall during a race; the literature is also reviewed. At urgent surgical exploration, the axillary artery and nerve were repaired. The patient subsequently successfully returned to professional riding. This case highlights the difficulties in diagnosis and management.

The authors have observed one case of injury to the axillary artery complicating anterior dislocation of the shoulder. It produced a marked haematoma of the axilla and ischaemia of the upper limb. At operation, avulsion of a posterior branch was associated with thrombosis of the trunk of the axillary artery. The result was good after saphenous vein grafting. This complication is very rare. Similar complications could arise from an excessively forceful reduction.

Three patients are presented in whom the axillary artery was injured in combination with a simple fracture of the neck of the humerus. The pathological anatomy, symptomatology, diagnosis and treatment of these lesions are discussed with reference to our own experience.

BACKGROUND: Axillofemoral bypass to treat aortoiliac occlusive disease is an extra-anatomic bypass, which is an alternative to aortobifemoral bypass in patients deemed to be unfit to undergo an aortic operation. Distal anastomosis is usually sewn to the common femoral artery. However, in patients with occluded common femoral and superficial femoral arteries, the profunda femoris artery can be used as the outflow. This study compares the outcomes of axillary to bilateral common femoral (Ax-Bi-CFA) and axillary to bilateral profunda femoris artery (Ax-Bi-PFA) bypasses.
METHODS: A total of 1,358
